A look at America's 1970s energy crisis, when oil embargoes forced conservation measures and led to the creation of the Department of Energy. The speaker reflects on how recently the country dealt with severe fuel shortages and rationing.
Everyone in America drove like a turtle in 1970s. For 20 years, no one could drive faster than 55 miles per hour. Arab countries banned oil sales to America because of war. No more oil for you. And just like that, Americans ran out of oil. So they had to save energy. No gas on Sundays, no Christmas lights, no street lights, no 247 factories. And no driving fast because it's more efficient to drive slow. Hell no. I could walk faster than this. And your AC cannot be too cold or too hot. America even had energy cops who checked the temperature. Step away from the thermostat. Because of all of this, America woke up, created the Department of Energy and promised itself to become energy independent. The lesson is simple. Don't depend too much on other people or you will find yourself driving like a turtle. The hell? That's one minute. See you tomorrow.
