Apple's new Image Playground generates portraits from text, but the speaker's demo shows it missed her hair texture, ethnicity, earrings, and freckles, defaulting to stereotypes instead. She walks through the feedback tool and urges viewers to report these mismatches so the model learns to be more accurate.

I've been accepted intoโ super excited to find out that I've been accepted into the new Apple Intelligence image generation tool. So let's take a look. Here you'll see I have the opportunity to build a new image. It has a bunch of different themes, um, suggestions, uh, costumes, accessories that I could add, places that I would be in. So let's start by saying I'm gonna be in space, and then I'm going to include, oh, let's say a, hmm, I don't know, I don't need any accessories, I guess. And then I will also include me being a robot, but it will be based on, oh yeah, and of course love, 'cause y'all know me. And then myself. And I'll let it do a little generation and see what kind of image it comes out with. All right, so let's click on it. So a couple things, uh, that come to mind here. One, of course, I am an astronaut. That's not terrible. But my hair isn't really accurate. I think I probably look more Black than Hispanic, um, and I of course am biracial. So, uh, that's interesting. Yeah, a little afro action. Um, love it when A model predicts the kind of earrings that I'll be wearing. Um, here we go. Yes, I don't wear gold, but that's okay. Thank you for that. See what else we got. Oh, oh, there we go. That's the good stuff right there. So when you see a model like this, you can give it some feedback almost immediately. I can right hit the littleโ that's not a great image. Um, and then it'll give me some options to provide this feedback, and this is critical for when you're training a model. Share your feedback. Um, it doesn't really match my description, uh, which is me. It doesn't really, uh, matchโ let's see, I'm a little bit worried about the stereotypes because I look like a Black woman with short kinky hair, which I do not have. Um, let's see, it doesn't really resemble the style in my picture, uh, as well. So let me keep going. My hair definitely doesn't match. Skin tone's okay, gender's okay, facial attributes don't match, no freckles whatsoever. And if you know me, I'm aโ I got lots of freckles. And then I always like to provide Amplifies Stereoโ oopsieโ Typical bias. And then I just send it on over. It'll send them over the created image, my face that was provided, um, and send to Apple. And now I've done my part to tell a model that it hasn't really captured who I am or the idea that I was trying to convey. If you are using this tool, please take the time to help train this model. This is how we make AI models better, how we make them more inclusive. Uh, the only way for a model to know it's not doing a great job is if you actually tell it. So please take time to go and do that. Thank you. Bye.
