Hey, what's up guys? This is Cody. Just filming a short video today. Wanted to talk about mentors, the importance of having a mentor, and how I found mine along with how you can find yours. Right now I'm currently standing in the Blackwell Mansion in downtown Tacoma. We're working on refinishing up these floors. These are 110 years older than me, and so we're going through the refinishing process right now. But I never would have been able to even be here experience these experiences, get these types of views without finding my mentor. And so I wanted to just film this video and talk about why it is vital for me to find a mentor and why it will be vital for you to have yours. And it really comes down to having someone who can keep you accountable and push you towards your goals and understanding that you don't need to do this alone. I came into this real estate gig with the mindset that I knew my stuff, that I was going to be able to make a whole bunch of money, and I was going to be able to achieve all my dreams relatively easily in the real estate field by myself. And lo and behold, that's not true. That's not how the real world works. And I had a mentor for me. He owns this Blackwell Mansion who was able to guide me and mentor me and coach me along the way, show me things to avoid, potholes that I don't want to hit that would really slow me down. And he's been able to help provide me with opportunities that I wouldn't have had access to. My original goal was to have a duplex at age 21, and right now I'm at 24 apartment units in Washington State at age 20. And so it's that idea of scale, having someone who's done it a few times that can really help put push you along the way and coach you for things that you may not know that you don't know. There's a little sphere that— this is what I learned a while back, but it's the idea that everything that you can grab, if you're standing in one place, you put your arms out, everything that you can grab is what you know. Everything in the room, everything that you can see, is what you don't know. And then beyond those walls, if we're in the room in here, beyond those walls, everything out there is what you don't know you don't know. And so with that, it's the idea that my mentor is on the other side of those walls right now. He knows a lot that I don't know. And with that, he was able to push me through some things that I didn't know how to get through. And so what does that matter to you? The idea that how do I find my mentor? I found my mentor by being present. I found him on a Facebook group. I made a post that said, hey, I'm an 18-year-old kid. I want to get a real estate— get into real estate, get a duplex at age 21, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes. I got a job already as a gymnastics coach, and I'm working on getting 2 more jobs, one at Target and one at Safeway. And I got a direct message from my now current mentor and a few other folks at the time said, hey, I've got a real estate firm. If you're interested, you should come check it out. There's an opportunity to make some more money than in retail and work less hours. Lo and behold, I'm working a lot more hours now, but I'm having a great time doing it and I'm way past my goals. What that means for you is that to find your mentor, you might need to be present, get front of mind, whether it's Facebook, Instagram, whether it's just an online website, connecting with folks in your local community. Make sure people know who you are. It's not about who you know, but who knows you. Because when those people reach out, they start learning about what you want to do. They're going to want to help you out. Some people won't, but there's a lot of people who want to help people succeed. And so with that, I want to end this short video. But keep it in mind that without a mentor, I wouldn't have gotten any of these experiences. I wouldn't have been able to achieve the things that I've achieved, and they're absolutely vital for achieving your goals, helping me achieve mine, and getting to that next level that I didn't even know was possible before this. If you have any questions, just leave me a comment down below. I'd love to answer your questions. If you want to see anything in a future video, let me know, and I'll see you guys next time.
