A farmland investor argues that $100 in farmland since the 1980s has never lost value, unlike gold, the S&P 500, or housing. Farms produce food, shelter, and water. Lab-grown food won't replace them.

So you spend a lot of time on your farms. You own farms. Yes. What is it about farms that resonate with you that make it a solid investment versus owning something like this? I love farms. They're peaceful. They're great in risk-adjusted return on investment. They're the highest asset class if you factor in the risk you took. From 1980, if you could put $100 into farmland, into gold, into silver, into S&P 500, into multifamily, into single-family on a risk-adjusted basis, farmland has not gone down in value once since the '80s. Other things have. And the reason is, is because it's producing the most important of all assets. Food, shelter, and water come from farms. I have wood on my farm, that's for shelter. Cows, corn, pigs, chickens, that's food. And water. I remember people thinking we're gonna all be able to build food in laboratories, so we don't need farms. Good luck with that.
