A rope-and-pulley exercise to regain forward shoulder motion after surgery. Your non-surgical arm pulls the surgical arm up while you keep the surgical side completely relaxed, hold the stretch for ten seconds, then release. Repeat facing the door, then away from it for extra range.

This is one of our advanced shoulder exercises that we use especially as people progress into getting more forward motion. This is a rope and pulley exercise. In this case, we're going to assume that the right arm is the surgical side. You're going to use the left arm to apply force pulling the right arm up and you're going to do your best not to use the muscles of the right arm at all. Only the left arm pulling it up. Once you get to the top of where you feel a stretch, you'll want to give it about 10 seconds before relaxing and letting it come back down. Once you've maximized your motion doing this exercise facing the door, you can turn around and do the exercise facing away from the door. This will help you get just a little more forward motion, as you can see here.
