Reverse Aging with Plasma Exchange at MDLifespan Chicago

Paul Savage MD describes therapeutic plasma exchange, a procedure that removes inflammatory molecules from blood and replaces them with saline. A 2022 study showed it reversed aging biomarkers. The optimal timing and who should get it remain unknown, but earlier intervention is likely better.

The mission of MD Lifespan has been a passion of mine for the last 30 years. It started with my own health problems of being one of the top ER docs and one of the largest trauma centers in the country, and not knowing how to take care of myself or my own Health at 300 pounds on seven different medicines and anxiety and trouble sleeping. I finally looked at my doctor and said, there has to be a better way. And there is. And part of the mission that I am on with the other physicians, the clinicians I'm working with, and my entire staff is to help to bring to patients the real science behind health and wellness. So the mission of MD Lifespan is to help provide to patients, to the general public things that you can do to give yourself as much health span as you have lifespan. Therapeutic plasma exchange I came across it because I'm always doing research on longevity. And In August of 2022, a friend of mine who's a PhD who was reviewing the article sent me a preview copy of it. I was stunned because I was finally stunned and excited because somebody actually did the study that needed to be done, which is looking at what therapeutic plasma exchange does to the biomarkers of aging. And it did exactly what we thought it did. It reversed them all. TPE relates to longevity medicine because a lot of things happen as we get older. Systems start to fail, not working as well. One of those systems that fail is the detoxification system. And plasma exchange gives a physician the opportunity to actually filter the blood and exchange it for crystalline saline. In that way, replacing the solution and removing all the antioxidants, all, all the damaged viruses, all the debris, and all the oxidative mediators that's built up over time. Patients are going to start to look now for therapeutic plasma change, otherwise known as tbe, because of the remarkable effect it has on the blood plasma in cleaning up the environment. By removing all the inflammatory and oxidative mediators and all the debris and viruses and kind of the crap that builds up over time that the body's not able to get rid of. The cell is only as healthy as its environment. And as we get older and the environment gets more toxic, the cell gets worse, not managing its life very well. So TPE cleans up that environment and gives the cell a nice, healthy chance. Some of the greatest health benefits that we're starting to see with therapeutic plasma exchange, again known as tpe, is the ability for. When we exchange the toxic inflamed plasma for crystalline fluid, we're actually reducing the number of mediators and factors that make the cell age. So in this way, we're preventing aging by cleaning up the environment and giving the cell a healthy, clean environment in which to live. One of the great questions is, who is the best candidate for therapeutic plasma exchange as it relates to longevity? The answer is, we don't know. It's probably much like, when's the best time to start eating well? When's the best time to start exercising? The answer is probably sooner than you think. We don't have enough of the measurements yet. But one thing we know pretty clear in medicine is it's easier to keep what you get than to regain what you lost.
