Speaker B argues most businesses don't need to become media companies, calling it Silicon Valley groupthink. His father's produce brokerage and a local apartment building prove profitable without it. Media works as a customer-acquisition tactic, like HubSpot buying The Hustle, but it's optional, not essential.
Time weather.
Do you subscribe to the thought that all businesses will need to also be media companies moving forward?
No, I think that's bull. Circle jerk, Silicon Valley stuff. Absolutely not.
Amazing. Tell me more about why not.
Because my dad owns a produce brokerage company that. And he makes great money. Like, is he a media company? No. Like, you don't have to be that. Not every business needs to become a media company.
I hate when people say, yeah, so where does it come from? Why are people saying that?
Because it sounds good in a quote on Twitter. I'm looking at big apartment building right across from here. Are they gonna have a media company? No. They don't care. Like what? What? No. Who thinks every. Who makes this frame up here? Are they a media company? No. Not every company needs to become a media company. If you want to do it and you want to get more customers, I think it's a great tactic. HubSpot did it by buying the Hustle. They're gonna make so much money from doing that. It's a great idea. I'm in media. I love media. Does everybody, every company need to do that? Absolutely not. 100%, no.
