Patrick Biddiscombe explains why service businesses should offer free in-person work like HVAC tune-ups to land long-term clients. A $90-$100 free visit costs far less than $250-$300 per customer from ads, builds trust, and gets your sticker on their equipment.

What if you don't just run an ad? What if you actually offer to come down and do a free service in the racing unit and you think to yourself, I can't go and do a free service and everybody's AC unit in this one zip code. And in my mind I'm like, all right, well, what does that cost you? You know, your tech is making 35 bucks an hour, and then there's the call time, then there's the gas. And so you're going to spend, let's say it's, you know, 90 to $100 in total, plus whatever the cost per acquisition on the customer is going to be. But because it's YouTube, it's going to be very, very little. So you just spent 100 bucks, but you got somebody in somebody's home, belly to belly, shook their hands, gave them something of immense value, and you're able to take your little sticker and slap it on the front of their AC unit that says, the next time you need help, call this number in six months, nine months, 12, 18 months, whatever. I've earned your love and respect. And I did it for less than the $250 to $300 cost per appointment that I would have spent at the extreme bottom of the funnel. So that would be the pre awareness pivot.
