This is a YouTube video titled "HubSpot 'How To' - How To Create and Use UTM Codes" created on August 19, 2015, providing a tutorial on using UTM codes in marketing to track traffic sources and measure marketing goals.
The best marketers I know are able to specifically measure how they're hitting their goals. For example, they know that their tweets from their company account is what's driving traffic and leads to their website, not just that they're getting traffic from Twitter.
The way they're able to do that.
Is by using UTM codes.
And today I'm going to teach you.
Exactly what UTM codes are and how you can use them in your marketing.
UTM codes are little pieces of code that you add to the end of your website's URL before you share them on a another platform. When someone clicks on that URL with added UTM codes, you can figure out how people are getting to your site. To create a UTM code, you need four main tags. First, you need a UTM campaign. This groups together all of the content from one campaign. Next, you need a UTM medium. This tells you the type of marketing medium that the link is featured on. Then you need the UTM source. This tells you which specific website is sending you traffic. Last, you need the UTM content. If you have two URLs on one page leading to the same URL as part of the same campaign, UTM content lets you know which URL people are actually clicking on. You can name these tags whatever you want, but be sure to use the same terminology across your entire campaign. To build your UTM code, check out your marketing platform. It should make this easy for you. If it doesn't, you can always use Google's URL builder. Then get publishing. Your analytics will keep track of these UTM codes for you.
And that's it. Thanks for watching. If you want to dive deeper into your analytics but you're not really sure where to start, you can download our ebook on the Introduction to Analytics right here.
