I Used ChatGPT To Create A Marketing Plan In 30 Minutes

Two hosts use ChatGPT to build a marketing plan for a SaaS that auto-updates CRM records, targeting 1,000 customers in 30 minutes. The AI suggests niche targeting, community building, and differentiation inspired by Seth Godin and Gary Vaynerchuk. They work backward from a 5% conversion rate to find they need 20,000 visits.

Building an entire marketing plan to get to a thousand customers is no small task. Well, watch Kip and I do it with ChatGPT in under 30 minutes. And better yet, we do it with the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin and other incredible marketers helping us do it through ChatGPT itself.
Kieran, we got a fun one today. We're going to build a marketing strategy. And you and I, we've built some marketing strategies in our time, but this time we're going to do it together and we're going to have a special guest, ChatGPT, that is going to help us build a marketing strategy that would get us to our first 1,000 customers as a business.
Right. This is a real working session. We don't really have an outline, and we don't know how ChatGPT is going to be able to perform the tasks we give it. So this is a good example of, like, us just integrating ChatGPT into a workflow and seeing where it actually performs to the point where you can use it, ship things from it, or where it's. Where it's useful or where it's not useful at all. And I think this is a good example of how people listen to this podcast and start to just think about, all right, what are ways that I can start to figure out if ChatGPT is useful or not? Claude 3 just released yesterday, so maybe we'll repeat the motions at some point through Claude 3 and compare those two.
Yeah, that'd be cool. Cloud, I've heard good things about Claude 3. I gotta jump on and spend some time there yet. I haven't done that yet.
The wildest tweet, I sent it to you last night. The wildest tweet was the actual Claude 3. Realizing that people were. Some of the queries it was being queried with were like, tests. Right? You're trying to test that a lot.
Trying to see how good it was.
Yeah, the needle in the haystack test. And it's like, oh, I know that you're actually. Here's the answer. And plus, I know that you're testing me. Just know that I know that you're testing me. You're like, oh, shit. Like, if it knows we're testing it, what else is it going to know? And be able to manipulate dumb humans with. Pretty awesome. Pretty scary.
What I love about Kieran is that you equally love AI and are terrified of AGI all at the same time. It's like, I think one of your more enduring qualities, well, no different from.
Sam Altman, I know he's doing it for regulatory capture for the most part to try to build his monopoly, but he stole every interior. Is like we're near AGI. AGI could end humanity. This could be terrible.
Before we get into the day's show, Kieran though, like to pat ourselves on the back because it would have been very easy. Instead of doing a show all about marketing strategy and how to help people to just do a 30 minute gossip session on the Elon suing Sam Altman and OpenAI. Do the whole history of OpenAI and Elon and just like completely tear that down. TMZ style. And we didn't. I commend us for not doing that.
We're going to give you actionable, practical uses for AI versus the kind of more TMZ version of what's happening over in Silicon Valley, which I love. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Elon's Texas style now, baby.
Right, so let's do the setup. Right, so I think the setup is. And again, this is the example we're going to use. We're going to set it up and describe the fact that we want to build a marketing plan for. To get us to a thousand customers. And so one of the cool things about. I'll show the prompt if you are listening on the RSS feed, this is going to be a great show. But if you really want to get the full value and follow along and maybe actually follow these steps to see how to use ChatGPT, you really do need to go on over and watch us on YouTube and subscribe to that YouTube channel for more like. And subscribe.
Leave us a comment, please, Please. We love the YouTubes. We get feedback that we push YouTube too much. Kieran, we don't care. We love it.
No, we love it.
Sorry. Unapologetic, baby.
Yeah, very unapologetic. Our numbers are, are going in that direction as well. Um, all right, cool. So here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna kind of describe it on the RSS for the RSS feed, but you can, you can watch along in YouTube. So we're gonna say we're the head of a marketing technology company. We have a SaaS product for a sales team. I'm working on a marketing plan that can help me reach a thousand customers. The cool thing is you can actually, you know, you can basically say who you want that marketing plan to be influenced by. So I've picked Seth Godin for Brandon, Gary Vaynerchuk for social media marketing. And who is this Kieran?
Flanagan's approach to traffic. There's a couple gems in this setup. First of all, I feel like you're doing this for one of the companies you're an angel investor in. First of all, is that true or untrue?
Well, I'm an investor in a lot of companies and they all need a vaccine customer, so I don't know.
It's partially true.
Which one do you think?
Partially true.
Give me the first letter, tell me.
And then you can cut it.
Tell me and then be it. I.
What'd you say?
You can tell me the name and then we can be at it.
Oh, I thought. No, I thought there was an AI prospecting tool you were an investor in that you were doing this.
Oh, there is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Shout out to tri scout. Yeah. So I am an investor in a sales tool. A really great sales tool. This is not that tool, actually. You'll see. This is a tool that I have talked to you about, so I'm gonna have to give it the context on the tool, so. But you like my three picks, right? Me.
You picked yourself. You picked yourself. That's just fantastic that you're like, you know. You know who's great? Seth Godin. You know who's also great? Gary Vaynerchuk. You know who's also great?
Me. Me. I'm awesome. So then you don't have to start.
I love where you're going with this so far.
You don't want ChatGPT. What ChatGPT will do is, like, if you don't tell it, it will probably just come back and start building the marketing plan. You. I don't know if you've seen that you like, you ask it something and before you have a chance to finish, give it all the context because you're trying to give it to piecemeal it. It will just go off and do the thing. So I say please confirm you understand before we actually get going. You see, the other thing I say is this exercise is incredibly important to my career. Like, I want. I want it to feel like it's bought into my career. I need you to sell and make this the best market it has ever been done.
Kieran is also a master of hype, hyping up the AI and prompts, like, sometime when you don't no longer have a job because AI is taking it. Kieran, your new job will be like, AI motivational coach. And it's gonna be great.
I'll be the.
What do you do for I coach AI Baby.
I mean, the Tony Robbins of AI agents, me and a room full of monitors.
I mean, it's kind of perfect for you. You wouldn't actually ever have to talk to humans.
This is the perfect job. I would enjoy being a motivational speaker, but not to humans. This could be a good thing.
Exactly.
All right, let's see.
The old motivational speaker by text.
It's going to understand. It's going to give us all the stuff to say. It understands all this stuff. Right? So, okay, we can get into the good stuff. And the good stuff. Let me paste the prompt here because I don't want to type it all out again. But we can actually reference some of these prompts. I'm going to give it all of the. I need to give it context. Right.
Like you do.
Imagine ChatGPT is your Internet or your colleague or your employee. You really. The results it will give you is really based upon how good the context.
Is, how good is the brief. Your prompt is like the, like the version of a creative brief. Right. And you're trying. The more complete you can make it, the more clear and the more context you can provide in it, the better chat GPT is going to do.
Right. Let me do this again. So what I asked you to do is build a differentiated marketing plan. I said, consider marketing tactics for each marketing channel. Think about counterintuitive approaches. So don't, don't give us any best practice advice. I don't want any best practice.
I like that you were like, I don't want any best practice advice. We love that.
Let's see if it actually does that. So I described the product. So like, if you're, if you decide to build this product, you have to actually reach out to keep an eye and we may angel invest. We get dibs. So the product is for salespeople. It makes it easier for sales to add all the customer interactions to a CRM. Right. Without the rep needing to do anything, the app simply clicks a button. It connects to all of their comm channels. AI extracts the most important information and obtains updates the contact records. What makes the app different is it's 10 it. 10x is the value of any CRM by enriching the contact records with better data and making making it much easier to market those contacts. So then I describe the. The. That should actually be the market, right? The market's crowded. There's a lot of apps with similar features. The CRMs themselves may actually decide to build these features if we become popular enough. So we have to go really Fast. Then I give it a goal. The goal is to acquire a thousand customers. I say like assumed conversion rate of like 5%, which means we roughly need 20,000 web visits.
But in what period of time are we, are we getting these thousand customers? If we want to.
Over an annual year.
Over 12 months.
Over a three month period. Over, let's say over three. Over a three month. Over annual year. I should be sacked if I get it.
Yeah, an annual year. Could you be more repetitive there, man? Come on.
Over three months. All right, this is a B2C to B app and, uh, market a plan. Again, should be differentiated. Again, take inspiration from these incredible marketers, including this majestic marketer, Kieran Flanagan.
And I heard it's got great sweaters.
Do it shorter concise format by giving the market a channel. And then there's three to five differentiated marketing tactics to grow demand for product through that channel. So we can click this and then we can actually see what tactics it gives us back and see if we would actually.
Let's go any of them.
And then the next thing we can do is like grade these things and see which ones we want to actually extrapolate on. I like that. Here's how you can approach each channel with a fresh and unconventional strategy. So you can see here it's already starting to pick out. This is why it's like really cool when you context up. It starts to like set it against popular tactics and books that Seth Godin has actually wrote, which I really like. Embrace the edges, right? We'll, we'll, we'll let it go and then pick, pick some of these to actually go deeper on. I think it's one thing I've definitely found is that even though you tell it, I, I guess, like, how would it give you the counter intuitive thing? Because the counter intuitive thing isn't the thing it's been trained on. That's probably when you start to see the true, like reasoning and the ability to go beyond like it's training materials. Because I still find in a lot of the advice you ask it for, it really is like the average of the best practice. All right, we'll get on to me in a minute. So let's, let's start with Seth.
What you get done to me in a minute. My advice.
All right, so like we, let's say we're building this marketing strategy, right? You and I are building this marketing plan. Which of these do you like to start for us to kind of dig into?
All right, so the three things on the branding side that chat GPT came back with was the Purple Cow concept, which is Seth's book all about differentiation. And if you are going to get a thousand customers quickly, you do have to be highly differentiated and highlight the AI's ability to seamlessly update CRM records not just as a feature but as a revolution in sales productivity. Launch an eye catching visual campaign that dramatizes the before and after of using your app. So what I like about that is that it's elevating the message up as like a transformational message which is very much a Seth strategy. I don't know how differentiated this approach is like, I don't know how Purple Cow this approach is like. I think it's a good start but I think this is an example of one where we would probably prompt it to iterate on that one more. Embrace the edges. Don't try to appeal to every salesperson. This is great advice actually. Like I wouldn't be part of our strategy but it would be part of like our advice to our startup who was executing this right.
Especially for your first thousand customers, like you probably would go after early stage founders, adopters, like early stage adopters. Like people even picked out people, people frustrated with current CRM efficiencies. Which basically means like pick your wedge, right? Like even on the marketing side of thing you're, you're not going to be able to go in there and out market all competitors. So like what's the wed. What's the marketing channel that you can extract the most value from in the quickest amount of time?
So what I really like here, interestingly enough, is number three, one of my favorite Seth Godin books of all time is Tribes. I think I've read Tribes like three or four times. I'm probably due to reread Tribes again, Kieran, but he's basically talking about ChatGPT is basically talking about how do you make this a community? And I do think one of the things you and I would probably do is create like a media content community wrapper that was like exclusive to our first thousand customers to drive urgency, right? We'd be like cool, we're doing a couple of these like ultra exclusive events. We're doing weekly masterminds, we're doing some very exclusive things and you need to be one of our first 1,000 customers to do it. Like I think we would do that.
Yeah, I think the mastermind group, like if you actually could set up mastermind groups, I like, like a large community broken into smaller niche communities. So you had your first thousand customers as the broad based community. But within there you had mechanisms to set up these mastermind groups for sales reps in whatever location they live in to be able to meet face to face and try to share tips and tricks. The thing. So when you look at these, right. This is all good advice, right? Like Purple Cow. How do you find the unique thing around your product to make sure that it's differentiated and stands out? Embrace the edges. Like when you're trying to acquire a thousand customers, you're not going after the most competitive channels. You're really trying to find like what is the small amount of users I can acquire from a certain channel. But I can build a wedge and I can build something differentiated to help me win in that channel and then build a tribe. Is like community based businesses are just in today's world going to be much more successful businesses. But this is like all like, this is all kind of like best practice and nothing as in depth as we likely need.
So one of the things, you also have to have a lot of marketing ability to translate these recommendations into an actual plan. You have to have a lot of experience.
One thing we didn't do and we can go through this and kind of repeat it. Actually we didn't tell it what our resources were. We could have said we're a small team of five people. We could actually ask to repeat this. But say we're marketing a team of five people and see if it adjusts what it does. Actually, we'll interweave that into one of the future next prompts. The one I wanted to kind of quickly look at is. Isn't the thing we would do is let's start with Purple Cow concept. So this is what you were saying. Like what's the best practice advice here and what's the counter intuitive approach we'll take and explain why that approach is different from what every other marketer typically does.
I like that.
And see if it actually can figure out. Yeah, I, I think.
