Lil Nas X engineered "Old Town Road" to become the longest-running No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 through deliberate strategy: building an audience with memes, buying a $30 beat, posting 29-second dancing clips, and listing the track as country to game the algorithm.

This is why Lil Nas X is a marketing genius. In 2013, he dropped out of college, hopped on Twitter and gained an audience by posting funny memes. His plan was to use his following to promote his music, but there was a problem. He'd post a meme and get 2,000 retweets, but he post a song and just get 10. That's when a light bulb went off. He stopped just tweeting soundcloud links and started making songs he could promote through memes. It had to be short. It had to be catchy. Paired with the beat he purchased online for $30, Old Town Road was born. He put the song over a 29 second video of a dancing cowboy. It went viral and his strategy was created short form videos with the link to the full song underneath. Change the title from Old Town Road to I Got My Horse in the Back so users could find it easier and change the genre listing of country since he noticed they were a lot less competitive. The song put up huge numbers and is the longest running number one song in the history of the US Billboard's Hot 100. When asked about the success, Nas states, a lot of people like to say a kid accidentally got lucky. No, this was no accident. This was a plan. Interested in hearing more marketing tactics?
