A short talk describing how Steven Spielberg demonstrated resilience and problem-solving during the filming of Jaws by adapting when the mechanical shark 'Bruce' failed, using yellow barrels in the film instead; the speaker argues these skills (problem-solving and resilience) are central to career success.
Chapters
Steven Spielberg is an incredible director, but he's also an incredible successful human being. And the thing he does in Jaws shows how you can be successful in your career. He had a budget, he spent the entirety of that budget on a mechanical shark called Bruce. Bruce was going to be the thing that made Jaws incredible, made it a huge movie. But unfortunately, Bruce broke in the very early days of filming. So what does Steven Spielberg do? He doesn't give up. He shows resilience. He shows the ability to solve hard problems. He rewrites the script around these yellow barrels. Now, anyone who's seen the film knows that the yellow barrels are attached to a shark, and they add a bunch of suspense and a bunch of horror to that movie. And the movie goes on to be the most successful movie in none of its time at the box office. And these are the two skills that truly matter if you are a CMO or anything else, which is the ability to solve hard problems and the resilience to actually see it out and actually solve those problems over time.
