What’s It Like Working Remotely at HubSpot?

HubSpot employees share how remote work improved their lives: one built a house, another got promoted to executive, and the company uses virtual game nights to keep distributed teams connected. The culture supports working from anywhere.

HubSpot is on a mission to help millions of organizations grow better through powerful marketing, sales and service software. We've always believed that people should be empowered to do their best work, wherever that may be. In fact, it's written down in HubSpot's culture code, meaning that remote work well works.
Remote people are people. Treat them with the same care that you do anyone else on the team and you can dramatically open up the pool of possible talent just by letting the best people do their best work. I used to work in Cambridge. I had about a three and a half hour commute every day. But I didn't want to leave HubSpot. And my wife and I came on vacation to Hawaii and we had that moment where like, why are we not living here? It's just not possible for my family to relocate to Boston at this time. It would be too disruptive. So working remotely opened a door that wasn't there before.
What drove us was to make our dream come true of building our own house on my husband's family farm. And I 100% wouldn't have been able to do this if it wasn't for HubSpot.
At HubSpot, we believe that remote inclusion is everyone's job. So that means instead of getting stuck at the question of whether or not something is possible to be done remotely, we try to start with the assumption that it can be done. And then we work on the how.
The team that I'm on is really open to having remote workers, so it doesn't really affect our ability to progress.
So many of our peers are remote, period. If someone's in Dublin and someone's in Cambridge, that's the same as if I'm in Nashville.
When I transitioned from my office work to my remote work, my responsibilities expanded.
I was a director over a team that then led me to getting promoted over the content group. Then I became a vp. And then over time, I became the first full time remote executive. So in four years, you know, that's roughly three and a half promotions.
I was so worried about going remote, but because I'm happier, more balanced and motivated, I've done better work. And that has had such a positive impact on my career.
Our culture isn't tied to the office space or the perks there. It's really about the values that we implement through our work and the people that carry out that work. I do participate in the remote water coolers as often as I can. We all hop on a zoom call and we talk about anything that isn't really work related.
Me and a couple other people on the team try to do like every quarter, do some kind of game night. And we do virtual games just to keep that face to face interaction.
As the world around us evolves, we expect HubSpot's remote community will continue to grow. If you're interested in learning more about HubSpot's remote community, visit our careers website.
I'll tell you what I dislike about remote work the most is how close I am to the kitchen.
