The Invading Situation Is CRAZY...

Perry Norman defends invading as legitimate high-skill jungling, not cheap play. He walks through Challenger examples and Diamond-plus decision-making to show why invades grant massive advantage when executed right, then explains how to respond when you're invaded: use the tempo to gank or counter-invade instead of over-extending.

Guys, there's another video going around on Twitter where somebody is saying to stop invading, okay? They pretty much said that invading is just like not good, it's not real jungling, um, you're not able to learn the game at its depth if you just invade every game, uh, and here's the thing guys, there is a small grain of truth in what he's saying. I ended up responding to this tweet and I'm gonna walk through you guys, you're gonna understand like what invading truly is in League of Legends, why I don't really teach invading. I'm just gonna walk you through just my thought process on what it's like to be a jungler and what invading truly is. So first, let's take a look at the tweet here, guys. It says that, "If you are a jungler and play like this every game, I speak for everyone when I say no one respects your rank." It's a quick 18-second clip. Pretty much this Kha'Zix is running into the enemy jungle. He goes in and he gets a beautiful level 1 invade. Kha'Zix versus Shen. He gets the camp here pretty successfully, right? Here we go. Great. And then he ends up chasing for the kill. And he gets himself completely, completely killed. So that's the moral of the story here, or the moral of the clip here. He says, "I actually don't mind playing into these people because they are inflated from cheese strategies. So they will usually end up inting the game away even if they get a small lead from it. If this is you that plays like this, please learn real jungling." So he doesn't believe that doing stuff like this is real jungling. "You can do this if you're adaptable, but forcing it every game like this—" player is low elo. Again, there's some grain of truth in this, but I'm going to be honest that invading is part of League of Legends. Invading is a great skill to have. I'll show you guys my response here. I said, "Crazy to me that this is looked down upon. Properly invading is one of the hardest skills to learn, but if you master it, you gain a huge competitive advantage." So what do I mean by invading is hard to learn? In the clip alone, Kha'Zix demonstrated a beautiful invade level 1. He's stronger than the Shen. But your Gangplank, his top laner, solo killed the enemy top laner. And invading, like, you need to be aware of everybody. You need to be aware of the support, their top laner, their mid laner, their ADC. Because right now, Kha'Zix has won the game. Kha'Zix has gotten the blue buff. And his top laner is won in the top side. So their jungler is fucked. Their jungler can't help his top lane. Jungle is won in isolation. Top lane is won in isolation. So Invading is so powerful here, but when you go forward and you chase kills, it's actually such a hard thing because people lack discipline, okay? People want to get so much. They want to win. They want to win harder. You'll see people who are like, "You can't end on a loss, but you also can't end on a win. You need to like queue up, queue up, queue up, keep playing." It's like gamblers. Like, "Oh, even if you win a shit ton, you want to win more." This is what Kha'Zix is doing here. He wants to win more. Than just the blue buff and the Shen's conditions. And because he's going to do this, he's going to now ruin the game. Okay, so I pretty much say that like, it's hard, but if you master it, it's really powerful. The issue is that junglers always overextend to chase kills, like in this clip. If he took the buff, zoned off the enemy jungler, pulled the laners, and then backed off, the game is completely over. Okay, when I first hit Challenger, I OTP'd Kayn and did a Raptor invade every single game. I have a video here where I'll show you guys. What I'm talking about. The Q over the wall pit is just so broken. It's unpatched to this day. It's still very strong. I think it's a matter of skill expression on both sides on how to navigate whether you're up or down a lot of resources at the start of the game. So whether you get invaded or whether you invade the enemy, it's a matter of skill expression. How good are you at dealing with the invade or winning the game with the invade when that happens in the game? It's part of League of Legends. I think it is ironic, guys, because I always tell people to full clear, and I'll continue to do so because it's much easier than mastering inbuilt. I'll talk a little bit more about this in a few minutes. I really want to show you guys this clip of me playing 5 years ago when I first hit Challenger. I load up into the game, I'm running into the top side, and you see me, I'm just prepared to go over this wall right here, and I'm like, yo, what up guys? I'm doing this from the start of the game. And there's like little to no hesitation. What I do here is I even grab a ward. I see this Lillia. Boom, Lillia's here. And like, I did this pretty much every single game I saw an opportunity to do so. This was such a powerful play to do so long ago, uh, and it still is pretty powerful to do. But like, truthfully speaking, guys, invading is part of League of Legends, and you need to note that like it's not a Oh, it's cheese, or oh, like, people are bad if they invade. Oh, this guy invades so much, he must be bad at the game. It's a skill to invade. If you're good at that, you might be annoying to play against, but it doesn't mean you're cheesing or you're bad necessarily. I have another example here in a live game that I just played earlier today where I full cleared down towards the bot side, and pretty much the enemy jungler did a little bit of a weird play. Where he ends up going to invade my raptor camp. So the enemy jungler is invading here, and this is normal, this is part of the game. After he invades my camp here, we get the— we win the fight, and I end up chasing the Lee Sin, not to kill the Lee Sin, but to go for his raptor camp. Not only do I get his raptor camp, I go ahead and I know that Lee Sin's low, so I do more, and he's going to the top side because I know what he did earlier, I'm jungle tracking, and I go for his raptors and his Krugs. Why am I able to do this? I know where Lee Sin is. I know where Quinn is. I see Alistar and I see their Brand. And I'm pulling this camp very safely. Look at the position I'm doing this. And I have a ward here. I'm aware of everything. Invading is part of the game. It actually makes you a better player if you know when to invade. So why is it then that I always tell people to full clear and to not invade? Time and time again, guys, you'll see me tell players please don't invade, please stop doing this, it's too risky, it's too hard. It's because when you're any rank below Diamond, are you really going to be aware of every freaking condition that helps you make the decision that invading here is good? Are you going to be fully aware and fully thinking that Quinn doesn't wanna just run to you here, she doesn't even know if you're coming here, because she must catch this wave. Same thing with Brand and Alistar, they're not just going to run to you on a whim, they're going to do these camps. And let's say they do run to you. What are you going to do? Are you going to run to the left? Are you going to run to the right? Are you going to run up? Are you going to run to the Sylas? Are you going to run to the Brand? Are you going to run to the Alistar? What is your response if they do try to chase you here? So there's a lot of go— there's a lot of things going on that I'm already calculating. Okay, if Quinn disappears, if Alistar disappears, I know what I'm doing. If Alistar disappears here, I'm running away up here. I'm trying to connect to Sylas, and I'm trying to fight here. Because Nami can actually run to here by the time if they chase me. Blast Cone is not going to be up at this time because it's too early on into the game, so that is not my escape route. My escape route is fighting through them with my Sylas. But I'm calculating all of that. If you're not calculating your escape route, who can fight you, how fast you can clear the camps, is the minion wave going to spot you— if you're not thinking about all of these conditions, all 4 of those things constantly, then your invade is probably going to be bad. So am I expecting anyone from Iron to Gold even Platinum Emerald players to really be thinking about these things? Absolutely not. But when there are very, and I mean very clear indicators that you should invade, let's say the enemy jungler is dead or the enemy top laner is like 1 HP, then yeah, you can go for the invade. You can go do an aggressive play. Here, for example, yeah, here for example, I kill them in the top side. So look at this, I kill them up here, we bait them. I'm playing through the fight really fast, don't worry about the fight. I win, We kill them all, and look at me, I check his top camps because 3 of them are dead. Okay, no camp here. That probably means the Gromp is gone. So what am I going to do? I'm going to travel to the bot side. I'm literally running through the turret to go invade the bot side. That was a weird interaction. I don't know what the hell that was. And here I am trying to invade bot camps. We take another little fight here. Great. And I'm still playing for bot camps because look at the score. I'm really strong. I'm doing a little dancing here. I see Lee Sin, great, we kill the Lee Sin. After I kill Lee Sin, I'm going for more bot camps. Invading is part of League of Legends, guys, but lower elo players tend to struggle with understanding when to invade. So I will say that yes, like, you don't want to invade 24/7, but there is times and places where you should do it. And I truthfully will say that is a lot of, is a lot of skill expression. I will say that this guy is saying, I legit don't understand how it is valuable to invade level 1 if you don't take a kill. Like, okay, you're very slightly ahead of the enemy jungler, but now you're behind every single laner because you don't maximize your exp with full clearing, how is it good for 1v9 in solo queue? I'm not gonna really read the responses here, but we do have Chad Jungle who coaches in the Jungle Kingdom, my premium community, coaching community. He coaches there a lot and he's a great coach. He really understands what it's like to invade. When he was a pro player, he took invading very seriously. He was very good at it. If you played against him, you would be very afraid that he would invade you. But really quickly, to talk on this point, you don't need kills to win League of Legends games. Taking one camp is is a third of a kill. It's a lot of EXP, and it makes it so the enemy jungler doesn't hit level 4 by the Scuttle Crab mark. He's not going to be able to, you know, take that crab and fight you. Alright guys, so if you are like Krill here and you're like, bro, like taking one camp is useless, taking two camps is useless, you're not understanding how valuable a small advantage is. Like, a small advantage really goes a long ways when trying to win League of Legends games. All right guys, what do you do when you get invaded? I get this question asked a lot. I'm going to show you guys what I did in this game, the proper response. A lot of it depends on the situation of the game, but I'll show you guys in general what you're trying to do. This game, it's Xin Zhao versus Mordekaiser, Fighters top lane, Akali versus Mel, kind of just like a— Akali's going to be under turret for a bit. Ashe, Seraphine, Corki Bard. This bot lane might not seem that volatile, but they actually are going to be volatile because Bard wants to fight, Seraphine wants to fight. They want to walk up and get control over the lane. I get an early ward in the top side and my colleague gets an early ward into the bot side. So it's a pretty standard game. I'm going to speed this up by 2x here. And what you'll see here is that I'm full clearing down towards the bot side and I don't see the enemy jungler on the Raptors. It's an enemy Kayn and that kind of worries me. I'm like, "Okay, so shit, where the fuck's the Kayn?" Kayns can do some cheesy shit. But I see my Raptors are up, so I'm like, Bro, the guy, the guy's not invading me, right? So I should be fine. I was like, okay, I should be fine, I'm not gonna get invaded. You guys will see here in a second like what, what went wrong with this game. I'm gonna skip it, I clear my wolves, I'm gonna skip it, I clear my raptors. And pretty much what happens is this guy ends up not doing his own camps until really late, and he did my red buff and probably my Krugs. So what I do here is bot lane's fighting and I just go run into the lane even though I'm level 3 I run and I try to make a play. I flash forward, I flash, I flash in, try to make this happen. Cool. Okay, I have no camps up. The Kayn has bot camps and top camps to clear. I have no camps and I'm not gonna run to his jungle with no HP and my teammates are like effectively 0 HP. What I'm going to do is run straight to the crab that's easier for me to take, which is the top crab, because my top laner got a solo kill and that makes top crab a bit easier. And then what I'm going to do here is I'm going to like try to fight the top laner or the mid laner. I'm just going to try to force a fight here. So as you guys can see, I just run top lane. I have no camps anyway, and I try to fight people. The Xin Zhao is just like, like trolling, like dancing. When you get invaded, you actually get a tempo advantage. And that's what people don't understand. If the enemies invade you, that means that you now have an opportunity to go ahead and gank lanes with your camps being cleared and the enemy jungler can't respond to you. Picture this. So the enemy jungler went ahead and he cleared my camps, but that means that he has all of his camps up. So I'm— he's cleared this and this, and now all of these camps are up. He has 6 camps up. I've cleared 1, 2, 3 camps. Now he has to go here. I've cleared 4 camps by the time he's cleared 2. Okay, so all my camps are down now. Now I can go bot lane gank, I can go top lane gank, and he's still clearing his camps. So pretty much when the enemies invade you, that gives you a lot of time to either re-invade them or gank lanes. It's not that safe to invade unless you know exactly where their laners are and exactly where their jungler is. Watch me here, for instance. I like walk over vision and I'm like confident trying to play an invade route here. And I completely screw my game over because the Kayn ends up actually recalling. I thought I could beat him 1v1. It's a little bit like of an oversight. Damn, he beats me. Mordekaiser stomps me. And like, I throw my lead here because I'm kind of just like, oh, I wanna, I wanna invade, I wanna invade. The best thing to do in this, in this game here, if I want to show you guys exactly what you're supposed to do when you get, when you get invaded, is I've salvaged my game. I found a good play bot lane and a good play top lane. Now if I just go back and I full clear down My game is won. I, I've— I'm ahead now. Um, so when you get invaded, the best thing to do is like, don't invade the enemies. Generally, that's not good. It's try to gank lanes, apply pressure, and wait for opportunity because the enemies will fuck up. Inevitable. It's inevitable. People will fuck up. You'll fuck up, they'll fuck up. Someone's going to mess up. But yeah, I hope this clears up on like what you're supposed to do when you get invaded. Use the tempo advantage to impact the map. They're stuck farming their camps, so go make a play somewhere. Okay, I mean, that's pretty much it for this like short video, short little rant about invading and why invading I don't recommend, but at the same time, it's not a cheesy thing. It's a skill-expressive thing. It's just most people are just really, really bad at it. Like, this Kha'Zix is really bad. Anyway, I hope this helps you guys learn a little bit more about invading, learn a little bit more about what it's like to think about are you getting cheesed or not. The good players know what to do when they get invaded. They know how to respond to it. They play, they re-invade, they use the tempo advantage. And bad players, they tilt. They lose their minds, they say the enemies are cheesing, and then they, they, they dug— they dig themselves a hole, okay? They literally dig themselves a grave when the enemy jungler invades them. They slam their keyboard, they're like, fuck, ah. And if you're that jungler, you really need to like sit with yourself and understand that like you're losing to yourself. You need to learn how to deal with invades. It's part of the game. All right guys, if you enjoyed, leave a like, comment, subscribe. I'll see you guys in the next one. Let me know if you like this style of video. Take care guys, bye.
