This Student was Stuck in EMERALD for 3 YEARS... This is How I Coached Him

All right, guys, we have an Emerald student here. He has very few games, so I'm gonna ask him about that in a second. And I just want to get some live coaching and overall, just see what we can do better with probably a main focus on maintaining high CS and how we team fight. So walk me through. We only have, like, 50 games so far, this split. What's going on there?

I've been playing on my other account. I got to Emerald on my Smurf as support, so that's nice. One tricking Nami, and now I'm trying to do it with adc and it's not going well.

Okay, so your, your idea behind oh, I need the Caitlyn here is. Is poor. That's not what we're looking for. We're looking for a chunk on the Aphelios or we're looking to kill him, but we're always looking to be safe and stay alive and keep our conditions high. So yeah, this guy is magically melee range. I'm going to auto him as much as I can. I'm going to ult him. I'm going to w. I'm going to do as much as I can to try and kill him, but I will never, ever, ever be in range of the threats. AKA Mordekaiser, AKA Kane, on the side, we saw Kane exit this way. So I will never put myself in this position because then that, that gives both of the threats an easy time to kill me.

So two things here. One, Kane goes top lane, and you say you should invade. It's not actually about the invading, it's about what your teammates are doing. So I like teaching this theory. One, two, three carries in a game almost always. Okay, there's one, two, three lanes. Okay? Every carry should hold a lane, right? Pretty straightforward. Jungler should be in the jungle, support, skip vision. If there are ever two carries in one lane, that means there will always be an empty lane. If someone is dead, there will always be an empty lane. This means the enemy will either try pushing the empty lane so you can transition that into a kill, or there is just free resources here for you to take kill or not. You get pressure on the map. So these guys can pressure, but you can pressure. And then you're creating the same invade play, but you're denying them from crashing a wave into us, and you're actually generating a wave into them. Okay, so right here, this Ailios catching this bot wave. Holy shit, it's illegal. And then we're losing a bot wave. Holy shit, it's illegal.

So we pretty much got a red buff, but we could have gotten a wave, a kill, and his blue buff, and potentially the bots here too.

And then you're playing on this, on this cane here. And this entire time you are just eating all of their damage. So what I'm looking for, what I'm looking at here is Kayn goes forward. I want to reposition my E because my Aquila is still on them. And then I want to hold the angle of this position where it's very hard for Ophelios and the Olaf to hit me.

But look at your position. You're back here. So the A sol can just fucking like land. Anything can just tickle you the whole time.

You need to change your positioning to be a much, much safer.

That's why Nashes is so strong on our champion, because we get our passive and our passive is a shit ton of our damage.

And then your E would be able to gap close him here and you'd get an extra two auto attacks because you would have already have your E in him and he would not be this far away from you. And then he would never have this weird opportunity to like, I don't know, like barely B doesn't live. But like, he would never have such a weird opportunity there. Eing him here is actually very important to dodge the mordekaiser E. And this guy gets one tapped. Cool. All this is what I find. It's this fight. So this guy's coming at you. Combo. You ulti Nothing. Let's say Kane is in the. In the area. This Kane will die or lose all of its conditions with or without your ultimate. I mean, you also got to think like, what is Kayn going to do here? Kane's always going to E through. And Q. What is. What is Shadow Kane? What does Shadow Kane's E do for him? Go through walls. What else? Heals. What else? Move speed. Okay, there's one other, like, a neat thing about Kane's E. Shadow Kane.

The difference is we don't get shit whether you live or die. And it's too early on in the game where there's too many resources for you to give up on. If you die for a Baron later on the game, it's. It's in theory just, like, worth it. Or if you die for, like, a soul, it can realistically be worth it if you die to end the game. Okay, Fuck yeah, bro. Like, sure. Like, I literally just win the game, right? But in the early game, you die and it's like, okay, the value of these deaths are not going to be as high. So you die and you get a. Like a quadra kill. But it's a guaranteed quadra kill because you had a four man Ulti and you did just the most insane play ever then, and you die after. That's fine. But what I often see is, like, you. You accomplished nothing in this fight. Didn't even kill him. And then you die. And that's like, okay, please just live. Just please just play a live. And that's often what people will do is they'll just play the most disgusting fight ever and they'll die. And they don't understand that this death is just completely preventable and it accomplishes nothing. Yeah, makes sense.

Play Diona more. Get the QE down. I think that's the easiest next step. And then understand, like, the damage more. It's like you're saying, like, I would have lived back there. Like I wouldn't have thought that. Right? Or like, I should flash earlier to dodge the Nami because I should see it coming from the top. I should predict that more instead of, like, trying to react to it.

I mean, I'm not even looking at Nami Ult. I'm literally just looking at Olaf Ulting at me and going at me. But often what will happen is there'll be one person jumping your team and their backline follows.

Yeah. It's not the easiest. I mean I'm more like a sex. I think that is a solid six. But like, like Volibear is a solid like nine as well. Like Volbert is not an easy. I mean eight. Like an eight. I'd say to. To play the champion in a level where you're actually dominating games and you're playing really, really nicely. Yes. So like in theory, like Diana's Kane is like a 7, 6 or 7 right around the same difficulty as Diana. I'd say.

To play at a competent level where you're. You're outperforming everyone else in the game. That's the difficulty level I'm rating it at. So for Wukong it's like an 8.5 or a 9. Because to play at a competent level where you're outplaying people and you're playing the best or the. Or the minimum to outplay people. That's how hard it is for Lee Sin in Italy. You can imagine like that's. You just need to be out of your mind to. To. To really outplay people and really play well.

Right.

So yeah, Nocturne, I mean very straightforward. Right. You just ulti in and it's like very, very straightforward, Kit. Very straightforward. Like the outplay is. Is the champion itself. Like the champion is outplaying for you. Amumu is outplaying for you. You just stun lock them and they die. And then like Bulbear is like okay, you actually have to like do a good bit of thinking when you're fighting. Same thing with Wukong. That's the difference.

Okay. All right.

So yeah, so you need to lock in on Diana then OTP the champion. It's a much easier champion to learn and you will probably learn this much quicker than you will Wukong and you'll actually hit a point where you hit the minimum threshold necessary to outplay people and know your limits. Wukong is hard. Way hard.

Yeah. So I, I need you to. When. When you're ready. At least. You did say you're going on a trip to Korea, but when you're ready, lock back in on. Hey, like, let's. Let's focus on learning the. The how to otp. You. You. You clearly listed to me the exact steps I'd give you on what to improve on for your mechanics. So you have the right head on your shoulders. You know what you're thinking. Your brain is working for yourself. Now it's time for you to review your games. Watch every single Q E. Watch every single ultimate. Watch every single time you can flash spells, survive. Watch every fight you take. Like, if you're really serious about getting yourself to diamond and out of emerald, there are different processes you need to take to actually make it to that rank. And I'm talking about seriously in depth. Every single game you play. Looking at how you use your Q, your E, your flash, looking at how, like how many times you died, I'm looking at all these very basic things that you are pretty aware of as well as we have a very human conversation, you are aware of these things as well. It's just time for you to. Instead of wait for me to coach you on these things. It's literally every game you play, spend 10 minutes, five to 10 minutes after the game and just really speedrun. Just speedrun. Okay. Qe. I literally forgot a Q again. I forgot to Q again. I forgot to alt again. I forgot to ult again. Or I died here because I wasn't aware of X, Y and Z thing again and again and again. And you start to realize the habits you have. And you can break them, but you need to realize them first, acknowledge them. And then it's very easy for you to do that. As long as you're reviewing your games.

I feel like I do acknowledge it. I just am loathe to like, you know, put in that much effort. You know, it's like I kind of want to like, go slow and steady, you know, and enjoy the process. It's like, I don't want a second job. Right? So it's like I feel like I'm okay with, you know, you know, waiting for you to tell me. Do you think that's okay or do you think like, there's no point in coaching in that case?

No, no. Everyone is different. The. The thing that I, I like to emphasize as a coach and as someone who loves League of Legends is I'd love for you to have the drive for yourself, to learn for yourself, because that's, that's when league is the most fun, personally. When it's like, holy shit, I learned about this by myself. No one told me anything. No one gave me this feedback. I just, like, unlocked the game by myself. That's the most fun to me versus hearing it from someone. It's like, yeah, okay, I get it. Cool. I'll implement this. I'll learn it. Everyone's different, though. If you like hearing me, expand your knowledge, expand your brain, that's fine. I just think, I just think you can get a lot more value from learning how to learn yourself. And also if you, if you, if your goal is to get to diamond and you really genuinely care about that goal versus having fun, then, yeah, well.

The thing is, like, I can get to diamond, right? Like, I've been Diamond, but it doesn't, like, magically become better. All that means is that I just have to work harder to maintain and climb more. So, like, I don't know. Do you think it's like, I don't want to waste your time if you don't think it's like, worth coaching, but, like, I kind of want to like, stay Emerald, learn more champs, have fun, learn more roles, you know, but like, not like, but I want to understand, like, what I could be doing.

Okay, let me, let me throw a reality check here.

You are currently Emerald.

Yeah.

And you are playing with Emerald players. You want to learn champions. You can, you, can you show your other accounts for me with me real quick?

I need to give you the, the, the reality of what you are attempting to do. To answer your question, though, is it not worth coaching? I think, I think it's. It just depends on you. If you have the resources to do so and you enjoy it, do it like, there's nothing wrong with that. And it's on you and how you want to interpret what I would give you. Because everyone, everyone looks at it differently. Everyone uses what I. What I give differently.

Yeah. Well, the thing is, I want you to be okay with, like, me just coming and like, coming to you for, like, I don't know, the next year and like, not okay and still being Emerald because I'm okay.

That's fine if you're. If at the end day, what I care about is as long as you hit your goals and you are happy with that. I'm happy with that. But let me explain to you why your goal is low key. Just.

Okay. Okay.

So. But it's fine. It's fine to have goals. I don't know. Like, personally. The way I will explain this is you are currently Emerald 3 and you are playing Emerald 3 average games. So you are playing against players who have a skill cap of maybe diamond and Autopilot, maybe Platinum, and they average that out at around Emerald. That's the way I normally look at it. It's like your peak is probably a tier, like a division higher, and your autopilot is probably a division lower. That's why you end up being the rank you are at. If you lock the fuck in every single game, you can probably hit your peak, but you might derank back down. So you need to work on both things. Increasing your peak and at the same time increasing your autopilot. The point is, you're playing with, on average Emerald players now. How much are you going to gain from playing with Emerald players versus diamond players versus Masters players versus GM and Challenger players? Now, the point that the goal for you doesn't seem to be to get to the Masters GM challenger, But if you want to learn about League of Legends and you care about the depths of the game, playing an Emerald is a disservice to you because you're not learning shit. It's like, oh, I want to learn all this math theory, but you're going to third grade math class and you're. You're with a bunch of middle schoolers, but your goal is to achieve a higher level of understanding for math, and your goal is to get into calculus and get into the depths of all these equations and all these theories and all these. These things. But it's like, oh, but you're actually going to third grade right now, and you're practicing in third grade. It's like, cool. But your goals seem to be much higher. So whenever I hear this argument, oh, I want to learn Champions in my rank, okay, Push yourself to get a little bit higher. Push yourself to really hit your cap. If you can hit diamond and then learn. Because the value you'll get from diamond players on average versus Eminem players is significantly higher. That's the only catch that I would say. Can you Emerald? Yeah, but you're just. You're just. You're just making it harder for yourself.

Well, that's like moving the goalpost, right? It's like, I don't want to, like, perfect a champ, right? It's like, I want to be able to be Emerald four with a champ, right? That's a much lower bar.

I think what I'm Trying to say is if you get to diamond on one champion, let's say it's Masters one champion, let's say perfect roll, you lock the fuck in, you get to masters on one champion, all of your other champions will literally magically be at a diamond level.

What? That's cap. What?

It's not. It's actually like. Like, all your other champions will naturally help, like, be towards a diamond high emerald level, because on your main champion.

You are playing in a master's ring with vi.

Huh?

And you saw my Wu calling in Diana.

Yeah. And. And your. Your natural skill level is at an emerald level.

Right?

So you push yourself to get to Masters. On vi, your natural skill level will be a high emerald level and a low diamond level.

That's so much brain power, though. It's like. It's like. It's a higher cost than I'm willing to pay. I just want to, I don't know, enjoy the game. You know, I don't enjoy playing in diamond. I don't even enjoy like, trying to climb. I enjoy, like, I don't know, playing with a team and like, not blaming each other. You know, the best games in league, I think, are the ones where we play as a team, not even if we win or lose. Like, I convinced a guy in that game. Actually, in the game you're looking at, when I was 18 5, I convinced someone. Like I said, like, I'm 13 5. Let's just play around me. We can win this. My Orn and my Kate were yelling at each other and they locked in and then we won. Right? Those are the best kind of games.

Right? Okay. Are you happy playing an emerald flat diamond leagues?

I actually like Emerald leagues. I tried diamond leagues, but they're just too fucking good. It's like I'm not gonna get to Masters and like, since the cap is Masters Masters hundred, I just kind of get stomped and that's not really fun.

There was this. There was this. Okay. The best way I can, the best way I can help here is there is nothing inherently wrong with the goal of wanting to be emerald on all of these champions and all of these different things. The way you are going at it personally, you are actually making it more difficult for yourself. Although it will take more energy, more mental willpower, more drive to get yourself higher rank, the reward at the end of that is far greater than being emerald on a few different champions. Because if hit Challenger on only jungle. Okay, now challenger is like a, like a bit like different. But I have a challenger and only Jungle. Yet I can play almost every single other role at a high diamond masters level without ever touching the role because of the people I play with. I get to see so much. I get to experience so much more. I get experience the higher levels of play from other people. So I naturally learn more. It's like putting yourself in a room full of brilliant people. You just naturally gain more. You don't need to be them, you don't need to understand them 100%. But just by being around them, looking at their work ethic, looking at how they view the world and everything, you gain things. You're putting yourself in a, in a, in a subpar learning position with the goal to learn more. And all I am trying to tell you is that you put yourself in a, in a, in a better learning environment, you will gain more. Although you are right that it will take more energy and effort. I just think you are getting half the value you could be if. Because you're playing an emerald.

Right? No, I agree with that. If I was magically like a better player, I would, yeah, I would get more. But.

But it's not being a magically better player. It's putting in that effort to become a better player. You are putting your effort to learn X, Y and Z champion, X, Y and Z role and all these other different things. Because your goal is to learn all these other champions. And I'm telling you, if you're willing to put that effort in, you're willing to put that energy in and you're willing to get back to diamond and get back to a higher rank, you will naturally gain more and hit your end goal which is to learn all these champions at an emerald level or a higher level.

Right. So my take on that is actually like I could do that or I could pay this genius guy 20 bucks a month and he'll tell me tips that I never knew about. He's like experiencing all this stuff. He's looking at the meta, he's looking at all these tourneys and then he'll distill down gold for me and so I can spend less time and 20 bucks and then I don't know. That just seems more efficient to me in terms of time spent. So that was what I was doing.

But like if that's a, that's an interesting take, I don't actually, I don't actually disagree. It's good for me. Good business. Don't get me wrong. Hell yeah. But what I do want to say though is I can only provide so much experience is worth far more than advice and what a mentor can give you. That's what I've realized is like, experience goes way further than, like, hearing what millionaires are telling me and business people are telling me. It's like, oh, my God, I'm making emotionally just the dumbest choices ever. And they'll tell me all of these things that I should or shouldn't do. But at the end of the day, experiencing them and enduring that and being part of that experience, that gives me way more value, that gives me thousands of dollars of value versus the 20 you're getting from, like, from me for that, for that one session. You're here for that small amount of time. So, yeah, I think you're. You're undermining the value of genuine experience at a higher level. I can only do so much for you, right?

Well, yeah, I mean, yeah, I agree. But, you know, I, I don't think it's. I don't think I can put in the effort. You know, it's like I'm playing Path of Exile right now. Right. I want to grind for my mage blood, you know, I don't want to play 30 more games of league where I'm going to enjoy like 20 of it, you know?

Yeah. And, and that's what I think. Your, Your goal, Your goals are set to keep you stuck where you are. And as long as you're comfortable with that, and as long as you're also comfortable not taking as an efficient route, as I'd suggest, then there is no, there are no quarrels. There is nothing wrong with that.

You like, like, you think like you're wasting your time or something.

No, no, because at the end of the day, what I'm giving you is I'm giving you tools to learn and I'm giving you advice on what you can learn. And as long as you're hitting your goal, I'm happy. And the reason why I'm coming at this in this approach is because I'm really trying to dig in and like, oh, are you sure you're happy with. With this? And you've given me the same response multiple times. And I mean, people in chat are saying, like, give up, like this, this and that. But my goal of this is to truly understand if you're comfortable. And I've attacked this with different approaches and you truly are just comfortable. And there's. You are the prime example of what it's like to be happy with where you are and genuinely just want to learn things. As I'll tell you, I will experience some players who really just want to only climb and they tell me I want to learn or I want to do this thing and it's like, okay, I'll dig into their mindset a bit more and, and then I'll come to realize that they just really want to get better at the game and hit higher ranks. If you're genuinely just happy with approaching the game like this, there's nothing actually wrong with that at all.

Yeah. So I will say the one thing that coaching does give me is that it helps me ground myself. Right. Like you said, like bring me down to earth. It's like if I'm playing by myself and like I'm trying to like not get coached. And I did that for a while before I rejoined Nathan's program. Yeah. Like you see my score, right? It's like, it's bad, right? Like I still have five deaths, right? But I see that and I'm like, you know, I did pretty good. You know, why am I, why am I still, you know, you know, having these troubles, right. And so having you tell me like everything I'm doing wrong like helps me realize that like I am here for a reason and that's good. Right. These are all the things I would need to fix to climb and that's, you know, a lot of work. And you know, I'm lazy and I'm here to have fun and not have a second job. So you know, maybe, maybe I'm happy where I am.

Yeah, I think, I think as long as you have that understanding for yourself and you're, you're not lying about that to yourself either, then there's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah.

Then, yeah, I mean I, I mean I, I think you, you know where you, where your mindset is. I think I've answered your questions about coaching and you, you have your reason to be here. You have your reason to learn. That's great. I'm very happy with truly understanding where you are coming from because it gives me a good perspective. It gives me a good like eye opener that people tad plate league can have this perspective too because I'm normally a hard on, I'm normally aggressive because it's like, oh, they really care about the game for X, Y and z reason. I need to make sure they really change to truly improve. So now if you're comfortable, you're comfortable. Now what I will say is if we dig into the, the game specifics really quickly before we hop off here. So the three things I want you to, to consider is number one, stop fighting in a way where you will end up dying afterwards.

Okay, number two, refine your. Your mechanics slash ability on your specific champion skill level.

Right? Champion mastery. Right.

Champion master. Yeah. I mean that's the best way to put a champion mastery. Okay. And then the last thing is game specific wise. You have things down nicely. It's. It's really just. Just the fighting. The fighting, it like matters to me the most. I mean like, like always. I think, I think instead of having a third one, it's literally just this like in a. In a sense where it's not even actually, here's the. Here's the third one. It's. Keep your conditions high as you take your fights. So what I mean by this is, is examples. Save your ultimate, Save your ultimate more frequently. Keep your HP HP higher. Save your Q more often. That's what, that's what I'm trying to say about conditions. Conditions simply mean like your hp, your mana, your ulti, your cooldowns, your flash, etc, okay, excellent. I was like, hey look, that old office jumping me right now. Flash early, get out of there. Get out of there.
