MAJOR KEY: What Gets Measured Improves

Peter Szabo (speaker) narrates a personal account (recorded Oct 8, 2016) about how tracking financial and marketing metrics transformed his business. He contrasts earlier feast-or-famine cash flow and high spending (mentors, travel) with recent results after daily spreadsheet tracking: a week with ~$1,500 ad spend producing ~$15,650 collected and ~$12,000 profit, hiring two sales/ads staff, and running the business remotely from Slovakia. Core message: what gets measured improves—track ad spend, CPC, CPL, conversion metrics, revenue and profit to stabilize growth.

Hey there. So this is the 8th of October, 2016, obviously. So I just looked at my numbers. So this week we had spent $1,500 in ads and actually collected $15,000. I think it was exactly $15,650 and out of that was $12,000 in profit. So actually cash that I get to keep. So why am I saying this? Obviously not to brag, but potentially put out the fire out there to inspire some people. You know, I'm 18, I've achieved this result that I just mentioned. I can actually back it up now. It wasn't always like this. I used to have months where I would make a lot of money, but also spend the same amount of money. Looking back over the past few years, you know, just kind of my relationship with my money and finances, it was a ride and it was a scary ride. Like I had some very high months and for the next few months I literally made nothing. Like looking back last year, I think I had like a fifteen thousand dollar month and for the next two months I was literally spending like seven grand a month each. So I was getting in debt. So I never was really broke. You know, I was never really making less than I had spent. So I, you know, still had money for travel, for some good clothes and you know, spent it on all sorts of bullshit and also good stuff. So I was really paying attention to other people's mistakes, you know, watching videos just like this. So I learned from their mistakes. And, you know, overall I was living a pretty good life. You know, last year I had the chance and privilege to travel to 12 different countries a little bit, explore the world. I pay a lot of money on the flights and hotels and these kind of things. I had the chance to meet a lot of people. I had the chance to work with four different mentors. Now these mentors charge minimum of $5,000 each. So you can imagine how much I spent on mentoring just last year alone. And yeah, I was making more money than my teachers combined. Actually all of my teachers combined in my high school. I was making more cash than them, but also spending it, spending all of that cash. So what was the point? So one thing that really transformed my business and just the way I behave around money, my relationship with money, is just measuring it. You know, what gets measured, improves. And when you actually see the numbers day in, day out and you see that, okay, it's going up, but it's going down. Now you have the reality check so you can actually take action and rectify. You know, you got to be impeccable with finances for such a long time, I was just guessing, you know, I got some money, didn't even look at the fees or whatever, didn't think about taxes. I only knew that I had money. I spent it. And at the end of each month, I was like, hey, there's a grand or two missing here and there. It doesn't make any sense. So I was like, very, very, you know, unprofessional with my money. And I wasn't paying any attention at all. And it showed up in my results, you know, and after I switched to actually tracking everything in a spreadsheet, like, I'm checking it daily, checking the ad spend, checking the cost per click, checking the cost per lead, cost per appointment, earning per, you know, earning per appointment, cost per sale. I'm literally tracking everything. Like how many people click to my page, what's the click through rate, from each page to another. Like a lot of advanced marketing, you know, words and stuff. But this is what has transformed my business. You know, last year I was making good money, but my profits were actually only a couple thousand bucks each month. This month, this year, I started making literally the amount of profit that I would made in an entire year in a single month. You know, this week, I had already made $12,000 in profit this single week, right? I got two salespeople working for me. I've got two staff members in terms of Facebook ads. I've got an account manager and an assistant. So, you know, and I'm pretty much running this entire business from home in Slovakia. So it's kind of crazy just looking back and how fast you can grow if you just get a couple. Couple of these simple ideas in the door and just actually implement them. There's so many people told me, hey, Peter, you should track, you know, you should really measure what's going on. And I never really listened to it. Like, I understood the concept intellectually, you know, I kind of understood what it's all about, but I never did it. And it showed up in my results. And you might be asking, how did I discover this? When did I get, like, the reality trick? Like the punch in the face be like, hey, Peter, now you gotta wake up. Well, one day, actually, it was a month and a half. Sorry about that. So I was in America for a month and a half with one of my mentors, and I was literally, like, living there and stuff. And I expected the trip overall would cost me $8,000. So, you know, including flights, hotels, food, all these kind of things, it would cost me roughly $8,000. So I came home after a month and a half and I figured that I had spent roughly $16,000, pretty much twice as much I had planned. And 16,000 bucks was a little too much to be. To be exact, at that time, I didn't have, you know, an extra 8,000 bucks to spend just on this trip alone. So after that I had kind of gotten into the scarcity mindset. I know a lot of entrepreneurs kind of go through it, that you have a high month and then for the next few months you just feast or famine, you know, like you're chasing after clients and customers. It is a scary, scary place to be in. I mean, I remember traveling in Venice with one of my buddies and he's like, dude, I can't afford my airplane ticket cuz I'm broke. There's no clients going in. You know, just a month before he was like making 50 grand. I think that was sales and not actual cash collected because obviously that's like a topic for a different video. Bottom line, if, if you don't track, it's not gonna work out. You need to track.
