Ten Reasons Why We Need To Go Into Business

Peter J. Daniels, a real-estate and bullion entrepreneur operating in 28 countries, argues that Christians need to enter business for economic influence. He shares his conversion at a Billy Graham crusade in 1959, then walks through 12 entrepreneur principles, 10 reasons Christians should pursue business, and 21 negotiation tactics.

Well, we're pleased to have Peter Daniels of Adelaide, Australia. Anyone who's been to Adelaide, Australia, a few of you. Okay, great. I've had opportunity to be there as well. Peter and Robina live just outside of Adelaide. As has been introduced in past, he's an international merchant of hope whose tale of overcoming odds and building a life of grounded faith and economic success has been an inspiration to millions around the globe, literally. Peter, with his own resources, has flown to places like Vancouver and all through the world and shared and spoken in churches and other centers whereby helping and assisting people like yourself to move into the places that you and I can be. His one of a kind story combined with his Noel holds barred passionate delivery impacts listeners with a new perspective of meaning, success, wealth and happiness. You've seen the resources, there's other resources that you can pick up. But I want you to know that I've had opportunity to be with Peter for a few hours and I found him and Robina to be the real deal. They are who they say they are and they're not pretentious. They don't boast themselves, but actually boast of what God has done in their lives. A widely published author, more than 10 books to his credit. Most recent book, an autobiography titled Living on the Edge. So over the course of these number of days, you're going to enjoy to hear Peter. He's going to tell you more. I could talk about some of his past experiences, but let me just say you're going to be blessed and encouraged today. So would you give me a warm welcome as Peter comes to share with us? Thank you, Peter, for coming.
Thank you. Thank you. I'm delighted to be with you here this morning. And it's Saturday morning, so it must be Vancouver. Over the last 20 years, my wife has traveled over a million miles with me and we have averaged 200 flights a year, every year for 20 years somewhere around the world. Have you ever considered how difficult it would be for an Old Testament prophet to be allowed to obey God in Canada today? Have you ever thought about that? I mean, consider the scenario of someone like Noah when God gave Noah instructions to build the ark and said, it's going to rain and I'm going to flood the earth and you can bring into the ark animals and people that I've told you. Then after a period of time, God looks down from heaven to see how it's going. In fear and trembling, Noah takes a plan and agrees to build the ark. But somehow it doesn't happen. He's sitting on a Rock with his head in his hand. And God said to him, noah, where's the ark? And Noah says, well, Lord, you have to forgive me. I did my best, but there were some problems. First, I had to get a permit for construction, and your plans did not comply with the codes. And so I had to hire an engineering firm to redraw the plant. And I got into a fight then with the Occupational Health and Safety Commission over whether or not the ark needed a fire sprinkler system or flotation devices. Then my neighbors objected, claiming that I was violating zoning ordinances by building the ark in my front yard. So I had to lodge a rezoning application with the city council, and now it's with the Land and Environmental court. I had problems getting enough wood for the ark because there was a ban in cutting the trees to protect the woodpeckers. I finally convinced the Department of conservation and Land management that the reason I needed the wood was to save the woodpeckers. However, no. National Parks and wildlife won't let me catch any birds. No birds. I got that cleared up, and the carpenters union formed a strike, and I had to negotiate a settlement with the Department of Industrial Relations before anyone would pick up a saw or a hammer. And Now I have 16 carpenters on the ark, but I just still don't have any woodpeckers. When I started rounding up the other animals, I got sued by the Royal Society for the protection for cruelty to animals. They objected to the combined conditions on the act and reminded me that section 4, subsection 2 of the act under which the license to keep native animals was granted, requires a minimum space stipulation. And just when I got that suit dismissed, the Environmental Protection association advised me that I could not complete the arc without filing an environmental impact statement on your proposed flood. They didn't take very kindly to the idea that they had no jurisdiction over the conduct of the clergy, creator of the universe. Then the Department of land and Water Conservation demanded a map of the proposed new floodplain. Right now, I'm trying to resolve a complaint filed by the equal Employment Opportunity Commission claiming that I'm practicing discrimination by not taking godless, unbelieving people aboard. And would you believe it? This morning, the tax office has taken my possession and my passport, claiming that I'm building the ark in preparation to leave the country to avoid paying taxes. I'm also told I have to wait for my registration, my business number, and the goods and services tax before proceeding any further. Now, yesterday, I received a notice from the Waterways Authority stating that I owe them some kind of user tax and failed to register the ark as a recreational watercraft. I also needed a boat driver's license. For those still debating about how to classify the craft, I'm getting continual visits from Greenpeace, the Royal Society, from the Protection for Cruelty to Animal Work cover, the Sheriff's Office, numerous other government departments that I didn't even know existed. Finally, the Council for Civil Liberties convinced the court to issue an injunction against further construction of the ark, saying, since God is flooding the earth, it is a religious event and therefore unconstitutional. Lord, I really don't think I can finish the ark for at least another five years. And then the skies began to clear, the seas started to settle down, a rainbow arched over the sky, and Noah looked up to heaven and he said, lord, aren't you going to destroy the earth after all? He said, no. He said, you bureaucrats have already done that. What's happening to our country? Your country, my countries? And for over a hundred years, the Christian church has ignored, feared, misunderstood, neglected and disfranchised from evangelism the very people that Jesus chose to influence and associate with while here on earth. Who in turn are the very people of this nation and my nation that build the business enterprises large and small and continue to provide the jobs, the income, so that week by week, month by month, year by year, the people in the pews can provide the gifts, the tithes and the offerings for the storehouse of God to nurture and propagate the gospel. Why are we lepers? Why are we ignored the business people in our country? Somebody please tell me, why have we ignored these same people who some of the sharpest minds in this country could enhance and finance the body of Christ and we deny them their destiny before God. Now I warn you now that if we continue to ignore the corporations and the business people in Canada and in my country and in the United States and England and elsewhere throughout the world, there will come a time when they will unknowingly endorse policies by politicians that will finally disenfranchise us. We need to get our act together. Remember that when Jesus came, he came down and he spoke to the tax gatherer Matthew, who collected taxes on commission basis. He went to Peter, who was in the fishing industry, Joseph of Arimathea, the tin merchant. The ark of the covenant of God was held for 20 years by Abinadab. We researched him through the Jewish synagogues and we find that Abinadab was a famous entrepreneur, Abraham, the greatest business person in History. Now let me shift gears a little bit and give you a bit of background. Now if you're coming to church tomorrow, I'll probably have to give them a bit of background to say you'll get a double dose. Let me tell you, tomorrow morning I'm speaking on leadership under fire. What's happened to the leadership of the Christian church? They couldn't lead a group in silent prayer. We've never had so many seminars on leadership and nobody's leading anything. Where are our Christian politicians? We thought that if we had Christian schools that would make a difference. We've had Christian schools for decades. We still haven't handled abortion, we haven't handled divorce, we haven't handled pornography. We haven't handle honesties. Our banks cheat us, our politicians lie to us. I mean, what's happening? Where's the influence? Where's the salt? Leadership for Christians is not optional. It's mandatory. We are either a leader in effect or we are a leader in self imposed exile. But we are leaders. We, not them out there. We are the light of the world. We should be showing the way. Well, I'm getting a little excited. I better back up a little bit. Let me give you a little bit of background. Well, I didn't finish what I was going to say. Tomorrow morning I'll be speaking on leadership under fire. Yes, Pastor, if I shift gears, I may do something different for the second one and talk about claiming the high ground. But that will clear their sinuses. But on Sunday night I'll speak on a possibility you think are tuned into perpetual principles. Then your seat belt if you're coming, because you'll crack up over this one. But let me get back to giving you a bit of background. Yes, I'm 78 years of age. Don't mess with me. I do 100 sit ups a day. I pump iron, I ride horses, I punch speedballs. I'm extremely fit, very fit for 78 years of age. My wife and I have been married for 57 years to each other. And I want to say something to the ladies. I want to say something to the ladies. Ladies, get off your husband's back. You're yackity yakety yakety yakking at him all the time. You're beating up his ego. I mean, give him a break. He says grubby things, you know, he says grubby things, he does grubby things. But God made him from the dirt. He's grubby. And let's get rid of all this divorce and stuff. I Mean, my Bible says, how do you know they're Christians? By the love they have for one another. Now I wake my wife up every morning with cafe latte marmalade on toast every morning of her life called self preservation. She's not responsible for anything she said in the morning till she had her coffee. But men, your wives weren't made from the dirt, they were built. That's why when you first saw her, you said, ma', am, what a build. But when are we going to get our act together? I mean, as individuals, as families. Robina and I have been married for 57 years. Do we still argue? Yes, occasionally we do, but I'm always right. I said to her, I'm right 98% of the time, but the 2% is just not worth it. I'm not going to tell you what she says back. We have three children and eight grandchildren who think I'm the fourth member of the Trinity. I've never gone through formal schooling. I've never had the disadvantage of going to university. I came from a third generation welfare recipient family. I had four fathers and two mothers. And most of my relatives had free board and lodgings with King George vi. I mean, they were in jail. I went to school as a normal kid went to school, but I was suffering from the debilitated disease called diphtheria and I was very late, I was in hospital for a long while and that was what happened throughout the Western world at that period in our history. And I went to school rather late and they tried to do some educational assessment on me. And they said, this kid, he's just one brick short of a load. He's not playing with a full deck. His elevator doesn't go to the top floor. And they thought I had brain damage and they were going to put me with a group of brain damaged children until along came a teacher called Ms. Phillips. I've often thought that she could kick start a jumbo jet with a left leg and a shoe off. I mean, she would make the Rock Gibraltar look like a marshmallow. She said, he's not brain damaged, he's just plain stupid. And for three years she punched me, she kicked me, she slapped me, she couldn't get any sense into me or out of me. And she used to get me by the chin and wrap my teeth and say, Peter Daniels, you're a bad, bad boy and you're never going to amount to anything. And that became a self fulfilling prophecy. I also have acute dyslexia. I cannot use a computer. There's A lot of things I can't do. I do have some major problems in that area. I'm also totally colorblind. I was married to my wife 20 years before I found out she wasn't black. Well, what do you do here? I was 25 years of age, 26 years of age. I was an illiterate bricklayer and stonemason. I'd come home with bleeding fingers. I'd leave sometime at 4, 5, 6 o' clock in the morning, maybe not get home till 8 and 9 at night. Working seven days a week just to. Just to try and survive. But on May 25, 1959, I went along to a Billy Graham crusade in Adelaide, South Australia, where I lived. When I heard the gospel in clear terms for the first time, I suddenly realized I was equal with all men before God. And I reasoned that if I was equal with all men before God, I no need to accept inequality than anyone. I was the son of a king. And I wish you could know the difference that that makes. I didn't suddenly become intellectually brilliant, but I knew that. I knew that. I knew that something had happened and I wanted to be able to respond to that. But how do you respond when you come from the other side of the tracks? How do you respond when God gives you a dream so big you can't even comprehend it? You're even frightened. To verbalize was a simple dream. It was to see how much money one human being could actually give away in their lifetime. We weren't ordinarily poor. We had to reach up to touch we. But bottom, how do you handle that? Well, I didn't know what to do. And so I got three dictionaries. I put one next to my bed. I put one in the toilet. That's a good place to read. And I put one in my excuse for a motor car. And I need to tell you about this motor car. It was a 1937 Ford V8 Clubman sedan that had been rolled three times. The hood was crushed, the windows were broken. We kept the doors on with wire. And it wasn't the cost of the gasoline that bothered me. It was how much oil this confounded thing used. It was eight cylinder, but it only went on five. And I'd sit there and I'd get my aerobics by just sitting there in the car. And if anyone sure needed, I could get 14 miles to the gallon of oil. If anyone showed any disrespect for my motor car, I would bridge it across the evening traffic and. And they would hit their Horns. They would yell at me, they would swear at me. And I'd just stay there and just sit there. And when enough people got behind, I'd put my foot on the clutch and slap it on the accelerator and I'd baptize them in oil. I kept pointing to words in dictionaries and getting people to tell me what they meant. Now, Australians are great kidders. They'd kid you up the tree and chop it down while you're up there. And I'd check with other people, make sure the first one told me the truth. But I went through those dictionaries frontwards and then backwards until I understood every single word. And then I read 2000 biographies. I haven't got polygraph. I said, 2000. I then studied law, accountancy, philosophy, theology, modern, ancient history, politics and economics. I found the mind was like a muscle and it could be developed. Then I went into business. Lost everything. I mean, that will clear your sinuses. I paid it back, went in the business a second time, lost it again. You learn nothing new from the second kick from a horse. I paid it back, I was going in the business second time. My wife said to me, peter, just get a job. I said, I won't get a job. She said, why not? I said, because job stands for just over broke. I said, and God's given me a dream. She said, well, this is not working. You're spending all this money on books and tapes and Peter needs some new shoes for school and Graham needs a sweater when it's coming. And I'm pregnant again and you've spent all this money on books. Nothing is happening. You're sure God speaking to you? On our 33rd wedding anniversary, I bought her a 49 carat opal with 33 diamonds on a necklace. I mean, this thing's so big, when she walks, she's got to walk like that. I said, you haven't complained about the books and tapes I bought lately. Well, I went in the business a third time and lost it again. What do you do when your dreams start to fade? You reach for one more dream. We should never give up, let up or shut up till God takes us up. Well, God has closed the door or kick it down. There's nothing capricious in God's nature. God will not give you a dream without giving you the ability to fulfill that dream. Well, I don't know whether I should try and be successful and make some money. Well, have you any idea the value of the gold, frankincense and myrrh? That was given to Jesus at his birth. I spoke to some of the greatest theologians in the world and asked them that question. They said, we have no idea. And what does it matter anyhow? I said, everything in scripture matters. It is God breathed. They said, well, you'd never be able to find out. I said, what if I finance you? So I financed them. Two years later, they become checking on Persia and they found some tablets. They said, we've got a foothold. I said, what do you mean? They said, we've found out that there was an army escorting the Magis through to find Jesus. A whole army. And they just defeated a Roman legion of 10,000 foot soldiers. They came to the city of Herod and you read in your Bible where it says the people were troubled, they were disturbed, you bet they were, because of that exact time. History tells us that Herod's army was away fighting a war and they could have taken the city. They arrived at Jesus home when he was about 22 to 24 months old, with the Shekinah glory shining down. They unrolled the gold, the frankincense and myrrh and some of it, we believe, from Solomon's temple. Have you any idea of the value? Try 400 million American dollars. Now that's acceptable. Now that's been validated. That's the best idea that we can get on it. Remember that Jesus was beyond wealth. He could turn the water into wine. It wasn't even his water. I mean, when he wanted a ride, a donkey straight off the showroom floor. It had never been ridden. He didn't feed it, keep it, breathe it. He was beyond wealth belows and fishes. Multiplied it by 20,000%. If he was a stockbroker on Friday morning, if he had $1, he'd be the richest man on earth by 5 o' clock that night, he was beyond wealth. We try to put him in a little box. And we love that poverty mentality because it means we don't have to perform. And if we don't perform, we don't earn. If we don't earn, we don't get and we don't get. We cannot give and we cannot leave a heritage to our children's children. What's happening to us? I mean, in Ezekiel it says, I sought for a man among them to build me a wall and stand in the gap before me, that I should not destroy the land. But I found none. The biggest gap in history in Christendom today, is an economic gap and no one standing in the gap. I want to be a Bible Teacher, I want to run a nursery. I want to look after orphans. Well, who's going to pay the bill? What is happening to us? Well, I don't know whether I could run a business. Well, maybe you can or maybe you can't. But you won't know until you've tried three or four or five or six times and fallen on your face and learned something. Well, I went broke the third time, paid it back and then went into real estate and built one of the biggest real estate corporations of its kind in our country with offices in Singapore and Hong Kong. We sold those out some years ago. And today our business is around the world in about 28 countries. We are bullion dealers. We have the only full reserve bullion bank in the world since 1619. And Denver here has been. And he's seen some of our material. He came all the way to Adelaide to see us. And many others have been done the same thing. And what was the other dream that God gave me? It was to change the world for 300 years. I was sharing it with the pastor yesterday. And you say that's a crazy comment to make. How can one person change the world in their lifetime? Well, Abraham changed the world in his lifetime. Moses changed the world in his lifetime. David changed the world in his lifetime. Gideon changed the world in his lifetime. In more modern times, a man called Mahatma Gandhi. With what he called Satyagraha, which was soul force, he broke the change of colonial power. He changed the world in his lifetime. Henry Ford changed the world in his lifetime when he set the world moving by the automobile. And Roger Bannon changed the world in his lifetime when he ran the first four minute mile and he proved that the efforts of human endeavor are yet to come. My hero, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. The last great English bulldog. This man the mobilized English language and centered into battle. When he sent those young men up in those Spitfire planes It caused him to say never before on the field of human conflict there's so many odes, so much are so few. So let us brace ourselves to our duties and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth will last for a thousand years. Memoirs who say this, this was their finest hour. He changed the world in his lifetime. Bach and Beethoven changed the world in our lifetime as they expanded their consciousness in the area of symphony and song. And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He changed the world when they were on Capitol Hill before the television audience of the world. When he gave that famous speech that said I have a dream. He said, I have a Dream that my four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of the character. I have a dream today. We have started something called the Gabriel. Call that over the next 20 to 25 years we're expecting it to bring in over 200 billion for evangelism. We do not accept any gifts. We do not accept any donations. You do that at your local church. It's time we got back to the local church where the authority ought to be and where the action is. Well, I want to speak to you. That was a warm up. By the way, I want to speak to you about Christians in business. You see, business people, entrepreneurs are the strong beacon of all commercial life. These people, they search out beneficial change. They illuminate and grasp opportunities and dare to explore the edge of safe limits. And in doing so, create new frontiers and push on further to remove the dim veil of ignorance, timidity and all that is yet to be seen, experienced and discovered. Now, without business people, the progress will be a stagnant residue of forgotten and discarded dreams. You see, these are the economic giants of the world who sometimes unseen, affect the lives of us all. Because without them, our countries and their inhabitants would continue to wallow and at times perish, while they stand subdued before everyone. And they stand there in their all, bound by their own fears, uncertainty and indecision. These giants of the human race, they lead the parade of progress unlimited by the chains that bind ordinary men and women. And they are for the most time misunderstood, envied and at times criticized by the very people they seek to provide benefit. These extraordinary heroes of the human race deserve the gratitude of all mankind. And we would do well to examine the tenure of their spirit and where applicable, learn from them. And there are 12 principles for entrepreneurs. 12 principles that stand alone in business. The first one is they have drive. They will keep on going when everyone else has given up and gone home. Secondly, they are persuasive in their quest to get others to see and follow through with their point of view. Thirdly, they have perception and can see what is not distinguishable to others and believe what others find unbelievable. Fourthly, they have strong ego needs that compel him to win, sometimes at any cost. Sixthly, they have confidence in their own ability to adjust and win from changing circumstances. They lack fear. They know what their inner beliefs will prevent them to do. And they plan strategies and measure their progress continually. They have short term view when assessing performance and a long term view when assessing success. Their final destination has clear, measurable and specific Time, quality and quantity values. They are mentally accurate and objectively urgent in all of their deliberations. They tend to choose people to assist them with the strength they do not have to fill in the gaps. Now, I know that you wrote all those down and I said them quickly. Why did I do that? So you'll get the cd because quite frankly, I've just loaded up a hand grenade and throw you a couple of million dollars there. And if you get the CD and you listen to that 10 or 20 times, it'll blow you away. Because if you keep those 12 principles, I also want to give you 10 principles of why as a Christian, you need to go into business. You see, I'm just tired of Christians being broke. I think it's time for us to take back the economics. I think it was time for us to win again. I'm just tired of Christians being broken. It's not right. We shouldn't be broke. We are the ones that should be leading the parade. And I want to give you some principles about handling business. And I think it will help you push the buttons and get things done. And I'm looking for my notes on this. You know, as I studied the 20th and 21st century, the greatest power force in the world was the Christian Church. That was the greatest power force. They had more money, they had more real estate, more gold and silver, more literature, more compassion, but without any real cohesion or unity. And if you doubt that for one moment what I've just said in the area of economics, then multiply the treasures of the Vatican, the Church of England and other real estate owned by the hundreds of thousands of churches and missions and that than the personal possessions of Christians throughout the world and you'll find the greatest economic power in the history of the world. But if you study the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, you'll find that God is not against wealth, but he's against sin. Now, let me work with you for a while and we're going to go into a question period within the next half hour or so and go through the 12 reasons why you need to go into business as a Christian. Let me give an illustration from our own church. I was in Russia. I received a phone call from my pastor while I was having breakfast in Russia. He said, brother Daniels, he said, we're extending the church. He said, in the power lines, the council has said they're getting too close to the building. We have to stop construction. I don't know what to do. I said, well, stay there for a couple of hours. I'll get it fixed for you. I made a few phone calls. The government came around and said, go ahead, get the job done. How can we do that? Because we have influence, we have authority, and we have a certain amount of power. You can get things done that other people can't get done. And the first reason you need to go into business, it creates a special type of freedom. And this freedom allows you to pursue a cause of endeavor that will, under God, direct your future. It well may be that the business itself will not fulfill your dreams, but if carefully and diligently pursued, it will provide the financial resources to do so. Now, I don't want to pick on Denver here, but he's been. And he's met my family, and he's met Graham, my son. When Graham, my son, who manages all our companies worldwide. I haven't signed a check for 20 years. We never, ever raised our voice to one another. He runs our banks, everything. But when Graham was about 12 years of age, I said, son, what do you want to do with your life? He said, well, Dad, I love trucks. He said, I like Mack trucks. I'd like to have a Mack truck. I said, good. Anything else? He said, yes, and I like horses. I said, that's good, son. You can have every one of those. He said, really, Dad? I said, yeah. I said, you can have him, son. He said, how's that? I said, you'll go into business. He said, I don't want to go into business. I want a truck, and I want horses. I said, but if you go into business, you'll get both. He went into business. There's a truck that carries 28 horses, and he owns a polo club. And he also blesses people right around the world in missionary work, in outreach, orphans right around the world. Just hang on to that. You see, it may not be your dream, but it will provide the finance to reach your dream. The second thing is the reason that you need to become businessperson. You'll become a participant rather than a spectator. You're able to be able to set standards in economics and morality. I don't know how moral you are. I don't know what ethics you've got until your back is slapped up against the wall and they're banging on the door and asking for their money, and you're broke. Then we'll see whether you lie. We'll see whether you try and wiggle your way out of it. I went before three major creditors meetings with more people than were here yelling for their money. And there was a big man stood up at the back, when everyone was shouting and screaming and yelling at me and all sorts of things, and in a loud voice he said, yes, the young man owes me money, too. He said, well, I'll tell you something, he's never lied to us. He said, I think we ought to let him go. He'll eventually pay us back. He did that three times, and I still don't know who he is. But you see, it's your reputation that's going to make the difference. And with your reputation, you'll be able to set the standard for morality and for ethics. Another time, I was able to take pornography to court. And the first time, for 200 years in the British Empire, I stopped them from using women as pornographic objects. How do you do that? Well, you have to have the bucks to get the job done. Thirdly, by owning your own business. This is a good one. You can't be fired or made redundant. There are plenty of opportunities out there at the moment. I could put you in business on Monday morning. You'd have cash by Monday night. The fourth reason is that you can spend special time with your family and give them a good lifestyle. You know, one Christmas, I turned to all our family and all our grandchildren. I said, we're going to Disneyland for Christmas. You can bring anything but money. We'll give you a wonderful time. You see, you can give them a good lifestyle. And fellas, let me tell you, give your wives some financial security. Am I right, ladies? Women need financial security. Fellas, you think you can fly by the seat of your pants, but let me tell you, these women need financial security. Now, how much security is enough for a woman? Just a little bit more. The fourth reason you need to go into business. You can spend special time with your family. Well, I gave you that one, didn't I? And give them a good life. So the fifth reason is a strong message to the community that your faith is more than worth and you've removed yourself from the timber waters of mediocrity. You see, the Bible says, I wish that you were either hot or cold, but because you're average, you make me sick. Get away from mediocrity. We will not accept mediocrity from our doctors. We won't accept it from our aircraft mechanics or our pilots. It's about time we started to stretch up a bit and be unique. Number six, you're following the biblical mandate of being light to the world. You are now a leader, not a maintenance seeker or a manager. Why is it that Christians don't have a good Name out there in the business world. People say, employers say they're lazy. They want to tell everyone how to do it, and they've never done anything. You see, if you was as good as you thought you are, we'd be following you, not the other way around. Number seven. It's an indication of your sense of responsibility as you become a benefit to the community and in the country that you live in. You see, if you win, Canada wins. Canada's a little bit like Australia. I'm watching the newspapers and they're talking jobs, jobs, jobs. Well, you don't get jobs until you build corporations. You have to build corporations to get jobs. And how dare you work for someone else. You are sons and daughters of the king. How dare anyone tell you what to do? You should be in charge. The eighth reason is an advantage, is you'll develop and obtain influence over people and events and you'll be able to invest in your local church and help others. Let me do a little bit of mathematics here. There were 12 tribes of Israel. 11 of them. Tithe to the one that meant the spiritual leaders, the pastors, if you will. They lived on 11/10. The people lived on 9/10. Who lived the best? Don't like that, do we? Well, if you don't like that, get on your knees and ask God to make you a pastor. When I get shirts from Hong Kong, I get shirts from my pastor. When a shipment of gold comes in, I make sure my pastor gets it. That's what we're supposed to do about gifts and offerings and tithing. The ninth reason being a successful business, you'll be able to be a heritage for the future generation of your family. Invoking the biblical mandate, a good man leaves a heritage to his children's children. We have a baton with a lion's head on the top. It has up the shaft of this baton parchment with our family's heritage in it. And we hand that down seven generations, and we're handing down seven generations of godly knowledge, wealth and wisdom for seven generations deep. You see, the Bible says a good man, a good man leaves a heritage to his children's children. And finally, number 10, your fulfillment as a provider and leader within your own household will ensure respect, responsibility and repetition. You see, we are the inspiration for our children and our grandchildren, Mum and Dad. Their reputation, the way they behave, the way they love one another, the way they unite together when anything goes wrong, that is the inspiration for our family. Now, I'm going to shift gears yet again. Would you like me to show you how to negotiate a deal. Are you interested in that? Don't overwhelm me with your enthusiasm, will you? I was in Dallas and Pastor said to me, how do you make money? I sounded pretty easy, really. He said, well, I've lost it. He said, how do you do it? I said, well, you've got to be able to negotiate. He said, explain it to me. So what if I just show you how I negotiate a deal? Would that be helpful? Okay, well, I'm just. Let me give you a real life situation. We have a country estate. It's gorgeous. 123 acres. And it's just absolutely. We got wild kangaroos there, everything that you could ever wish for. And I wanted to have a road put through. And the best price I could get was $100,000. I knew the job would be done. Well, it was a local person and that was the best price I could get. How do you negotiate? It's the best price you can get. You can't get any better. We've tried. So you wait a week and you call the guy. Charlie, is Peter Daniels here? Oh, yes, Mr. Daniels. I said, I'm phoning you about the quote that you put in. He said, did I get the job? I said, well, that's the question I'm asking you. Would you like it? He said, I sure would. I said, well, how would you feel, Charlie, if I wait another month and I get someone that will do it 10% cheaper? Would you be happy about that? Long silence. You mean to say that if I do it for 90,000, if I could do it for 90,000, I'd get the job? I said, you have my word on it. He said, can I come tomorrow morning at an irrevocable order sign and I've got the job at 90,000 cash within 30 days? I said, absolutely. Tomorrow morning, 10:30, comes the next morning, 10:30, we've got coffee and cakes for him. And I've got the contract at the end of my desk already signed with duplicates ready for him to counter sign so he can take away. And I've got $80,000 in small denominational bills covering my whole desk. I got a plastic bag on the floor. We have our coffee and he keeps looking. I said, oh, your contract's at the end of the desk there. He said, what's all that money doing there? I said, well, that's for some lucky guy today. He said, I could be so lucky. I said, well, your contract's at the end there. For $90,000. All you have to do is Countersign it. I've kept my word and you can take it away. And you've got $90,000 we paid in 90 days for satisfactory completion. He said, well, what's all that money doing? Oh, I said, well, if you want to do it for 80,000, you can put it in a plastic bag on the floor and you can take it away with you before you even start. What do you think he did? Took the 80,000. He didn't have to see the bank or anything. That's called negotiation. Okay? Now, there are 21 principles in negotiation. Now, I'm going to give you millions of dollars right here and right now. 21 principles in negotiation. 1, what am I trading? 2, what am I forfeiting? 3, what are the uncertainties? What. 4, what are the guarantees or penalties? 5, what is the term? 6, what could cause failure? 7, cannot fully perform. 8, can they fully perform? 9, what are the buffer zones? 10, what if we underestimate? 11, what if we overestimate? 12. Can costs expand? 13, can percentages decrease? 14. Are there any exit points? 15. Are there any conditions of mutual withdrawal? 16. Are there any outside influences? 17. Who exactly is in charge? 18. What are the ongoing obligations? 19. Are there any upper or lower limits? 20. Are the personalities involved permanently committed? 21. Are all points of concern agreed? Written, dated, signed and witnessed. Now I know you wrote all those down again. Now you really have to get the cd. Now, if you can remember, if you can make that part of your psyche, those 21 principles, it will literally change your life in business. Now, does anyone have a question? A man at the back. We got a microphone, pastor. They want to have it on the recording. Give me your name and your question, sir. My name is Chris.
Out of those 21, and probably in the book as well, you probably touch on this, but.
What would be your.
Like, what would be one of the 21 that is your favorite, but also something that maybe wouldn't take apart in the book, like, do you know what I'm saying?
What is my favorite. Well.
What'S the killer one of the 21?
Well, they're all important, but if you want something to carry with you in your pocket all the time, always under commit and over perform, it'll drive them crazy. Any other questions? Do you want to ask any questions at all? Any question at all? There's a gentleman here. I was going to show you how to raise money, but you don't seem to be interested in that. My name's Norm Tapp. I do have a question on the. Excuse me. On economics? And how do you view the fact that the US has doubled their money supply? And what are the repercussions of that that we're going to see in the next future of that? Well, I didn't quite understand the whole question, but I got most of it. I think you're talking about the economy. Okay, this is our long suit. We did two films 10 years, I think, one month prior to the collapse of the American economy that we predicted would happen 10 years earlier at that particular date. But we were one month out. We did two films on it. We submitted it to the Video and Film Festival in Chicago. We won the gold for directorship and the silver for content. We also predicted the 1987 crash in October. November next year you'll start to feel the pain of what's really going to happen in the world. America owes 90 trillion at the moment. Now try and get your head around that 90 trillion. If they only owed 5 trillion and they could stop borrowing, that would be a miracle of God. But what if they could start paying it back at a dollar a second and they started 150 years ago? They have to go 159,000 years to pay 5 trillion. We are in a mess. And don't think that Canada is going to escape from it. Canada is in the same mess, but maybe not as big, but they will be as big because it will affect everyone in the world. Greece is a mess at the moment. England has brought down the toughest budget since World War II. But you're being temporarily calmed by a fog of political propaganda. We are in a frightening situation that may take us 10 to 20 years to pull ourselves out of this. Going to be a lot more pain on the way. So you make sure you get your bills paid. And if you have implosion, which I think is going to happen, which means that they're talking about inflation, but that'll just come for a little while. Then you'll have implosion, which means you will owe more on your house than what it's worth. Now handle them apples. Mr. Daniels, you said earlier that if someone was wanting to go into business, you would be able to say a business that they could go in and could make money by the end of the day. That was one question. And your other that you said that you wanted to answer was how to obtain funds through a bank. You're asking two questions. I am. Okay, it's easy. You can start a business on Monday morning. I mean, it is so easy. I don't understand why people don't do it even if you haven't got any money. You can start a business as long as you're clean and tidy. You go to one of the nice houses around here, you knock on the door, you take two steps back, and you say, good morning. My name is Peter Daniels, and I'm in the window cleaning business. And we're just opening in this area, and I would like to clean your windows free of charge. I beg your pardon? I'd like to clean your windows free of charge. We're just coming into this area as window cleaners, and I would like to do your windows free of charge so you can see what a good job we've done. I won't damage the roses. No, I will not accept a tip. No, I don't need a cup of tea, but I just want to do your windows free of charge. You can pull the blinds down and I'll do them for you. What is your name? Mrs. Black. Or Mrs. Black. I'd love to do that for you. So you do Mrs. Black's windows. You ask her, what's the name of the people next door. They say, Mrs. White. So you knock on the door, take two steps back and say, Mrs. White, my name is Peter Daniels. I'm in the window cleaning business, and I've cleaned the windows for Mrs. Black. And I'd like to take clean your windows. And we do it free of charge because we want to show you what a great job we do and that this establishes our business in this area. So you do that. Then you ask the name of the lady on the other side. Mrs. Green. You do the same thing. What have you done? You've created Luke 6. 38. Given. It shall be given unto you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together. As you give it out to others, so it'll be given unto you. Then you knock on all the doors down the street and. And you say, I'm in the window cleaning business. We're just coming into this area. I've cleaned the windows for Mrs. Black, Mrs. White and Mrs. Green. They're very happy with it, and I'd like to do yours for 50 bucks. Let me guarantee you, you will have money by the end of the day. Let me guarantee to you that you can earn 1000 bucks a week on that quite easily, because we have people that are already doing it. And when they're doing it for 12 months, they then go into the car detailing business and they sell all their line of their window cleaning business out for 25, 30,000. There's no big deal about it. You can do it. But we don't want to humble ourselves and do that. But humility doesn't deny reality. You got to start somewhere. Okay, Any other questions? Peter, I have been told that Jesus appears 132 times in the New Testament. 122 were in the marketplace, which backs up what you've been telling us. With the decline of church and Christianity in Canada and around the world. As far as that goes, how do we change the people entitlement mentality that's in the church that everybody's to support somebody else not going into business? How do we go about changing the mentality of Christians in the marketplace? And obviously with Jesus appearing 122 times that way, I think there's a message there. How do we change? Well, first of all, we're full of fear instead of full of faith. People are frightened to go into this. They're fearful that they'll fail. There's nothing wrong with failure. You only really fail when you've stopped and we've got our economics mixed up. The story of the talents is a very interesting story. I come from Baptist work. Now we Baptists, we know our theology, but we don't do much with it. But they told me that the talents was your ability to sing, your ability to lead, and so on. That's a lot of twaddle. There were two talents in Jesus time. There was a standard talent and the royal talent. The standard talent was 30 kilos of gold. The royal talent was 60 kilos of gold. What was Jesus talking about? And what about the reprimand they gave the one that didn't do anything in business? See, we've got it back to front, but we're full of fear instead of full of faith. We've got to get rid of this fear and we and we've got to occupy our faith. And one of the things that is important with faith, and we see this with the prophets of old and the things they did with their faith, they harnessed it to their willpower. Now, willpower is inseparably tied to faith. How strong is your willpower? If you say you'll do something, will you follow through or will you justify a let out clause? So I think we have to get back and follow the biblical mandate and remember that Jesus was in business, his parents were in business. The Bible says occupy until I come. If you look into the root meaning of that word, it is do business until I come. Now, there was another question somewhere. Okay, there's several questions.
Good morning, Mr. Daniels. My name is Scott Christie.
I've already opened and run my own business.
You touched on negotiating from a purchaser's point of view. Can you touch on negotiating from a.
Supplier'S point of view?
I have competition in a lot of.
My business area and often lose contracts to other people. Now, what would you do if you.
Were going up against competitively priced services?
Well, you've got to be able to market. You see, we put all our effort into. We need cash. We need cash. We need cash. I need more cash for my business. Now, if you could double the number of people you are serving, you wouldn't need the cash. You've got a marketing problem, not a cash problem. And I see this 99% of the times. I went into one company in Texas, and they had a heck of a mess. They were going broke, and they wanted some advice. I said, I can fix it for you. And they said, how much will it cost? I said, it'll cost you 1 million bucks. And they said, if you can fix it for us, we'll pay you the million bucks. I did it in 15 minutes, and I changed the whole marketing program, and they made, I think, over 100 million finally. So it was a good deal from them. You got to get back to marketing. Any other questions? Hi, my name is Jason Ford. I was wondering, what's the balance between debt and leveraging, or is there a balance there? And in terms of, like, a lot of times you see businesses starting up by borrowing cash to fund that business, or even in your personal life, people will get a mortgage to finance a house and that sort of thing. Well, our companies have not.
