The speaker never served in the military due to a traumatic brain injury, but spent five to six years around military-style communities as a civilian. They credit Jocko Willink's principle of extreme ownership as central to what they learned in those spaces.

A lot of it came from my actual experiences hanging out in these groups, these capacities. And I should mention, I was never in the military. I actually couldn't get in because of my traumatic brain injury. So I don't want anyone to listen to this and think, oh, he was a Navy SEAL, he served. I was not in the military. I hung out in that community for about 5 or 6 years pretty closely, but it was not in a service capacity. And so I don't want to mislead anyone. But the lessons that I learned in that training was directly related to a lot of the stuff that Jocko Willink preaches. So yeah, I fully agree with everything in that book. It's largely the principle of taking extreme ownership.
