A short YouTube video by Phil Risher arguing that many home service businesses historically grew almost entirely through referrals. The speaker gives an anecdote of a $3 million home-service business with 36 Google reviews that depended on 100–150 referral partners who sent leads monthly. The video presents a repeatable playbook: build an external salesforce of complementary companies (e.g., roofing contractors for gutter cleaners) using a three-email outreach, add referred partners to a monthly/quarterly newsletter to stay top-of-mind, make in-person visits to build rapport (donuts, meet technicians), and incentivize employees with roughly $50–$100 per referred job. Messaging guidance emphasizes positioning partner companies as the hero and the business as the guide with a referral partnership program.

Before the Internet, everyone was just word of mouth referrals back and forth. When I started working at a home service business, they had 36 Google reviews. They were $3 million business, all just based off of referrals. So they had 100, 150 referral partners. And those people sent them leads every single month and then closed them and then they gave them money for the leads. The real secret sauce is that you can build out a sales team without building out a sales team internally. You can build external salespeople for your business that are already doing work that then can refer you. Now, what we do as a company is we build out a list of complimentary companies for the decision makers. So let's say you do gutter cleaning. We'll build out a list of all the roofing contractors, that's the decision makers, and we'll send them three emails. The first one will say, partnership question mark. Looking for a good roofing company to work with. And came across your website. Want to see if we could have a quick conversation. And then if they open the email, we'd say, hey, call these people and tell them like, hey, I have this relationship. Then we put all those people into a monthly or quarterly email newsletter so that we stay top of mind. The other secret sauce to this is for local service businesses. It's not just an email cold, but you actually have the advantage where you can go show up at someone's office and be like, hey, I'm a real person, you're a real person, let's work together. Let me bring donuts to your office and talk to your technicians and build a relationship with them. And then when you're there, you get the employees excited about referring you, not just the owners excited about referring you. Because the employees can make an extra fifty to a hundred bucks per job that they run where the owner doesn't really care much about 50 or 100 bucks. The last part to this that people always ask is, well, what If I have 50 roofing contractors and I'm referring all these people like the that feel a little slimy or weird. Well, it's not because you're not the hero. They're the hero. And a lot of times businesses get stuck in the hero mindset. Their problem is that their employees want to make more money. Their customers are not working with them and they're going to someone else because they also do that service. Also, they're not upselling or serving their customers to the full extent that they should be because they don't do this service. And then us. The business is the guide, and they have a solution or they have the process. And the process is we have this referral partnership program where you can make more money, keep your customers stickier, and solve their problems. And then we roll it out.
