Russ Lowry argues that how you handle small things, like keeping your space clean or working unsupervised, reveals your character and predicts success. He points to military boot-shining and Van Halen's M&M rule as proof that details matter, and says to do everything well and learn from mistakes.

Today we'll call this how you do one thing is how you do everything. So often you wonder why I want you to keep your rooms clean, your cars clean, your house is clean, how you dress, take care of things. Because when you let one area go, how you do that one thing, leaving your house dirty, trash everywhere, it just tells people about your character and it shows that one area of your life is lacking. There's no reason for that. That's not how you were raised. That's not how it should be. I mean, keep stuff clean. When you're at work. Work, don't slack off because your boss isn't there, your supervisor's not around. See, people see that in you. And you'll look at. I've already talked to some of y' all about this. There's so many people you work with that are just the walking dead. You just don't understand why they're in the position they're in. They've been in their position for 20 and 30 years. Very little movement. Just complain all the time. And it's because that's how they do that thing. Many different things in their life have led to that decision. So whenever you're doing something, do it to the best of your ability. Show people you care. People see these things when they see the little things. General Schwarzkopf had a saying. You can look him up. He was a general in Iraq War. Shine shoes save lives. The little things matter. Soldiers who shine their shoes also took care of other things. You'll see this in all the famous contracts in the rock and roll bands. Van Halen. They didn't want any Brown M&Ms. People are like, why were you so freaking picky about brown M&M's on your whole list of food, booze and needs for every concert? And they said if someone took the time to do that one little thing. Read that. Take them out. The big things usually got handled. So how you do one thing is how you do everything. It affects your whole life. And if you want to succeed in life, just do everything to the best of your ability. Everything is perfect or as exceptional as you can fall forward. We'll talk about this in some videos about different things you should be doing in your 20s and your 30s and your 40s and your 50s. But fall forward, fail forward whenever you're doing something. So if you're doing it 110%, sometimes you'll do it wrong. Sometimes you might be like, I might have picked the wrong career. There's times when you can make those changes. But do everything the best you can. Show people what you're made of, and great things will happen.
