3 Simple Tips to Build a $100k Life Coaching Business

James Allen shares how he grew from a $30K to $100K coaching business. Pick a narrow problem instead of calling yourself a life coach, create a high-ticket offer around it, and have direct conversations with prospects. He uses Renee, a vocal coach who hit $10K months after redefining her offer, as an example.

Right now you're probably working harder at selling coaching than any other job you've had in your life. And I only know that because I was stuck under $30,000 every year for years as a life coach until I learned what I'm about to share with you. But once I did, I went from $30K a year to my first $100,000 year the very next year. And it wasn't from running ads, building crazy funnels, or spamming 100 strangers every day. So here are 3 simple tips to build a $100,000 life coaching business. The first one is to stop selling life coaching. If you had to get a major surgery, would you rather have have your general doctor do it or have the top surgeon who specializes in that type of surgery. Coaching is no different. When I started out, I was a 22-year-old spiritual life coach because I had not built massive businesses or anything. So like most people, I naturally went into kind of general life coaching and I was helping people with health problems, business problems, uh, relationship issues, dating, finding a career that they really enjoy. The list goes on and I couldn't keep up. I was a jack of all trades and a master of none, and that is why I had a hard time building a legitimate business. I didn't start making real consistent money as a coach until I niched down and went into the productivity space. Instead of helping people just live a better life or make your dreams come true, I was helping busy professionals stop doing useless tasks, focus on better ones, and clean up their tech so they could be more productive. The problems I solved were more focused. I had testimonials and proof that I could actually solve that problem for people, and I finally felt like I had a lane. Life coaching is harder to sell because you can help just about anybody with just about anything with the principles that you learn from life coaching. And that's a blessing, but it's also a curse. I personally don't want to hire someone to just kind of like be my friend and encourage me. Yeah, accountability coaching can be a thing, but that's not really going to pay you big money. Also, I never want people to feel like they're paying me a bunch of money just to be my friend. I want to be a solution to my audience and my customers. Picking a lane and specializing in solving one burning problem is what's going to make you more money as a That's why I'd encourage you to move away from general life coaching and think, what is this problem that I have solved in my life that people are also trying to figure out? Maybe it was paying off a ton of credit card debt, dialing in your finances, finally getting good at dating, learning a musical instrument. Like, the list goes on in what you can actually do that people are willing to pay for. When you become a specialist in something, your messaging becomes clear. You'll be able to say no to more people, which is a good thing, and you'll be seen as an actual solution rather than a commodity. So if you're in the coaching space right now or you're thinking about diving into it and you're serious about consistently enrolling high-paying clients, then I want to invite you to the Get Paid Clients Challenge. So once you pick a lane and you actually specialize in solving a legitimate problem, now we just need to make an offer that people actually care about. Most life coaches are trying trying to solve problems that nobody actually wants to pay money for. I had a client named Renee who came to me frustrated that she wasn't making money from her vocal coaching. She had 20+ years of experience, her own vocal studio, and a deep passion for singing and teaching people how to sing. The coach she was working with before told her to focus on business owners because business owners are always happy to invest in themselves, or they're more likely to invest in themselves. Common thing that people will tell you to do. But this coach was telling Renee to focus on business owners who have lost their joy in their business and to help them reignite their passion through singing so that they can put more energy into their business. Do you see the problem? Renee was spending all this time going on business-related podcasts, speaking on stages in front of entrepreneurs and business owners, and then reaching out to entrepreneurs. But the message just wasn't landing because it's such a small sub-niche of people and she wasn't making any money because of that. So I just asked Renee, Why don't you just teach people how to sing? She has the experience, she has the track record. She's literally helped people improve their singing and their health when it comes to singing. So we adjusted her audience, her offer, and her strategy. And a few weeks later, she sent me a message that she was having her first $10,000 month right before Christmas. Clearly, knowing who you help and what problem they would pay money for is the first step to building a wildly successful coaching business. And by the way, this is the first thing we cover on day 1 of the 5-day challenge. So take a moment to decide who are you helping and what problem are you helping that person solve? Because your offer isn't how long your program is, it isn't how many courses or modules they're going to get when they sign up, it's not how many sessions they get in working with you, etc. An offer is an outcome that someone is happy to pay for. That's it. And the bigger the problem you solve, the more enticing that that outcome or that payoff is, the more money you're going to make. I know people who charge $7,000 to help you navigate a divorce, $5,000 to rekindle a relationship with an estranged $20,000 to teach you how to do home loans so you can make $20,000 over and over again. $6,000 to teach you how to do futures trading. People pay for outcomes. Nobody wakes up in the morning and thinks like, I just want to hire a life coach to hold me accountable for whatever. Like, no, they want accountability for a specific reason, whether that is to get into shape or to actually go out and approach women. Like, whatever the thing is, People want solutions to their problems. And if you're a general life coach, it's going to be really hard for you to market and show that I can solve this legitimate problem. But when you specialize in solving a legitimate problem, people are going to see your value. And if you have a track record of people you've helped in solving that problem, that just shows that you are legit. And when you can genuinely solve a legitimate burning problem that people have, they will pull out their wallet and hire you to help them solve that problem. Once you nail this, selling coaching becomes so much easier. So once you know who you're helping and what you're helping them do and you have an offer that people actually care about, it's a juicy outcome that they would pull out their wallet and throw you money to help them solve or figure out. The next thing to do is just to get in front of more people. Most coaches struggle to sell coaching because they just don't make enough offers. In the early days of my coaching business, I felt like I was working so hard to sell coaching, but I was barely making any money. I was working harder at selling coaching than any other job I have ever worked in my life. But then I had a mentor ask me, James Allen, how many conversations have you had this month with your target audience? How many offers have you made? It felt like someone just punched me in the gut. I was just standing there blankly, like, even though I was working so hard and putting in so much effort to build my website, playing with Canva, even creating content that just wasn't getting attention. I was working so hard and like doing so much, but I realized in that question that I wasn't focusing on the one thing that actually sells coaching, which is coaching people. And now I'm going to ask you that same question. How many offers have you made this week? How many times have you sat down with the person that you want to help and talked about how you can help them solve this problem that you claim to be a specialist at solving? For example, if you help men over 40 get into shape because you've done that yourself and now you're coaching other people on how to do it, how many men over 40 have you talked with this week about getting into shape? If you help type 2 diabetics reverse their diabetes and lower their A1c, how many diabetics have you talked with this week about lowering their A1c? That is all that this game is. And the sooner you realize that it's just about having more conversations with the right people and inviting them to help solve their problem, the easier getting clients will be. So first, you need to know who you are helping and what you are helping them do. That is your North Star, because once you nail that, then it's just about finding ways to consistently get in front of those people and get to a point in the conversation where you can ask, do you want some help with that? If they say yes, you offer a free session, and if that goes well, then you invite them into your program. If you follow those 3 steps, you become a specialist at something. You have an offer or an outcome that you can help people get that they would actually pull out their wallet for and pay you big money to solve because it is a big problem. And you just focus on getting in front of more of those people and talking about how you can help them and offering to help them, you will make six figures as a coach in no time. It's going to take work, don't get me wrong, but that is how simple it is. And when I share this with my clients, they always feel like it can't be that simple, but it is. You don't need complicated funnels. You don't need to run ads per se. You don't need to spend months building a digital product that people probably aren't even going to buy anyway. You just need to focus on more quality conversations with the people you want to help and offering to actually help them. If you do that enough, you will be making six figures in no time.
