If you're going to build an online course, do it right. Way too many people sign up for Kajabi and they're paying their monthly subscription to Kajabi and they're not seeing anything back in return. I know this from experience and from talking with a lot of people, but now I make my money back every single year using Kajabi, and it just makes sense because I've learned how to actually use the platform. Now, the major reason that people aren't successful when it comes to creating online courses inside of Kajabi or just in general is that they just kind of run with a random idea. One of the biggest frustrations that I hear from my audience when I talk with people is, I have all these different course ideas and I don't know which one I want to build. And it's like, it doesn't matter what we want to build per se. I mean, you do have a say in that and it is important to be aligned with you, but what matters more is what your audience actually cares about and having an audience and understanding what your audience does care about. Our goal as the creator and the business owner is to be a really good problem solver, which means we have to Find a big problem and then create a solution. Find the demand and then supply that demand with a really good solution. The way that we do this is we have real conversations with the people that fit the description of our target audience. And if you don't know your audience, just think about who do you want to help and what can you help them do? What's a specific outcome that you can help people do and do they care about it? If you used to be a fat kid and now you're in great shape, you have the know-how to help the other people who aren't in as good of shape as you and who want to be. That is a big problem in the world. People want to get into better shape. If you can think about health, wealth, and relationships, people are always trying to get in better shape, be healthier. People are always trying to deepen their love or find new love, and people are always trying to save or earn more money. And that's never going to go away because that's just human nature. Now the question is, what do we say in these conversations when you're meeting with your audience, whether it's on Facebook, in-person events, or just calling up people on the phone? Whatever it is, just get in touch with people and Don't even try to sell anything. Just have a real conversation with this person and just focus on them. Here are the questions to ask to structure this phone call or conversation that you have with somebody. The first question is, what's your biggest challenge or frustration related to whatever your topic idea is or your niche? Next, what's the biggest hope, dream, or desire that you have related to X? And then lastly, what is the biggest barrier uncertainty or obstacle you feel is getting in the way of you achieving that. What we're trying to figure out is where is this person at, where do they want to be, and what's getting in the way of them getting from point A to point B. Now, what's beautiful about having real conversations with people is that you can ask them deeper questions and more specific questions related to each one of these major questions. You can ask them why and keep asking them why they want to achieve this goal and get 'em like emotional about it. Like why do they really want to achieve X? What's that going to do for them? When you get those emotional responses, that is pure gold. That's what we wanna write down and we wanna save inside of a Google Doc or Word document or write it down on a notepad, whatever, as long as you have quick access to it. You can also use these 3 questions to run surveys. If you have an email list or maybe you have a big network that is filled with your target audience, send out a survey and say, hey, I'd just love you to fill this out. Maybe you have some sort of incentive incentive, like you're going to send them a $12 planner on Amazon or give them a cash prize or incentive for whoever fills out the survey. They enter to win $100 or $50, $300, whatever it is that you want to do. And if you do a survey, ideally keep it bullet points. Just make it really easy for them. It's just 3 questions. I like to do the first 2 questions about the challenges and the dreams that they have as just bullet points with what you know, and then the last one about their obstacle that they feel is getting in the way, you can have that be a free write. It's really short, it's easy to fill out. And with the free write answer on the obstacle, you can get a lot of great information that's going to help you when it comes to writing emails and sales copy down the road. Once you've collected more information from people and you've done surveys, you have had conversations, you've done sales calls with people, you've collected a bunch of data from your audience. Now we want to do is spot transformational trends. Because that's the point of an online course or any kind of product that you build. You want it to be a transformational experience. Out of all the information you've collected from your audience, what seems to be the most trending challenge and frustration that people have, along with the most trending hope, dream, or desire that these people have as well? That's your transformation. You just need to see a clear point A and point B that the majority of your audience is experiencing and what they want to experience. Try and narrow it down to 1 to 3 main topics. From there, you can see if one of them is a clear outlier, then create a product around the outlier. But if they're all about equal, then you can kind of decide which one you would like to build, which one you feel would be the most fun or you'd be most interested in. Now it's time to build out your course. Well, kind of. We want to start by building out an outline. This is just something simple in a Google Doc where you have your title and your lesson names as well. Now what I recommend to do and what I wish I did when I first started building courses was start with a mini course. No matter what your product is, always start with it as a mini course. And the reason that we do this is when you have a $50 to $100 product that is very concise, it solves a very specific transformation for people, it's pretty easy to sign up for that. This gets people into the door at a no-brainer price point, and then they start to experience this transformation by going through your course. It's very easy to digest, to implement in their own life, and they can see the clear benefit of doing it. And this gets people to test it out. And then you can get feedback from the people that are inside of your course by having a little feedback form, by asking them questions, sending out an email to them inside of Kajabi and saying, hey, like, What do you like about the course? What do you maybe think could be better about it? Is there anything that you feel is missing? Do you want more clarification around something? And from this feedback, we can develop this course into something bigger and more grandiose down the road. And as it gets bigger with the details inside of it and the transformation, maybe you expand on different ideas, then down the road you can start to raise up the price point. By having these people inside of the course early on, you can get a lot more testimonials and engagement from inside of your course, especially if you're doing comments inside of your course. This is the stuff that I wish I knew when I first started building courses. It would have made everything so much easier because when you have transformation, you have testimonials inside of your course, then selling it down the road when it is more expensive is a whole lot easier because you can just share on the sales page like, these are the transformations that people have been getting by using this course. So when you see this transformation that you've decided, I'm going to build my product around this because I see that there's a demand for this type of solution, then what we want to do is create a 5 to 7 step solution. So you see where they're at, where they want to be. What are 5 to 7 steps that you can walk them through to take them as seamlessly as possible from point A to point B? What you're going to do is you're going to write out all of this on an outline and try and create catchy titles. If I was building a course around how to build a course, ironically enough, I could have the first lesson be called customer research, and that's kind of boring, it's lukewarm. But if I change the title to something like how to find product ideas that are virtually guaranteed to sell every time, it's pretty obvious which title you would click on. So what I challenge you to do is, as you go through your outline, come up with catchy titles for your steps that you've laid out. If you have 5 steps, to achieve whatever transformation it is. Make them catchy, put them in a sequential order. And when you share this outline with your audience and just have people look over it, they can decide like, dude, I would totally pay $100 for that solution or $50 for that. And it can give you that reassurance that you know that this thing is going to be a killer product and it's really going to help people and it's going to sell. Take the time to find the most common challenges that people have and the most common dreams that they want to achieve related to whatever it is that you do. When you do that, I guarantee that you will find highly profitable course ideas that you can then plug into Kajabi.
