This 1 Thing Transformed My Coaching Business

James Allen shows how he scaled his coaching business to six figures working under 20 hours a week using a three-step client acquisition process: Connect, Inspire, Invite. He automates it with evergreen content, email funnels, and digital products. The biggest blocker to hitting $10K monthly: trying to serve everyone instead of picking a focused niche.

Have you ever felt like earning $10K per month as a coach was an impossible dream? Like you need a PhD in marketing, insane charisma, and to be a guru at sales? Look, I get it can feel overwhelming, but here's the thing. I went from barely scraping by to having a six-figure coaching business working less than 20 hours a week once I learned what I'm about to share with you. So in this video, we're gonna cover my super simple business building formula that helped me go from struggling to thriving, how to use this formula to have your business working for you 24/7, and also give you the biggest mistake that every coach makes when trying to hit $10K per month. Think of building your coaching business like dating. Imagine meeting someone for the first time and immediately asking them to marry you or move in together. Probably not gonna go too well, right? In dating, the first step is to get to know each other, to find people that you would be interested in potentially dating, and then connect with them. And then it's about building that relationship, building that connection and a deep sense of trust and rapport with this person and good feeling vibes. And then finally inviting them to move to a deeper commitment. To commit, maybe a second date or something like that. Why you should treat my coaching business like speed dating, jumping straight to the invite without building any real connection or trust first. It wasn't until I started seeing my business like dating where each stage is crucial and it builds on the last. Then I started to see real results. So here is my super simple business building formula. Step number 1 is to connect. Just like dating, the first step is to make a genuine connection. This means introducing yourself to potential clients in a way that's relatable, engaging, and most importantly, authentic. You do this by sharing valuable insights, participating in conversations where they're already happening, and being visible in spaces where your ideal clients are likely to be found. This could be through social media platforms, networking groups, or in-person events. Once you've made that initial connection, then we want to move on to step number 2, which is to inspire. The goal here is to get them to like, trust, and respect you for the experience and expertise that you have. In dating, this is a stage where you show your date why you're worth someone getting to know better. In your business, this means offering value without asking for anything in return. Inspiring someone means motivating them to take action, think differently, or pursue a goal by tapping into their emotions, values, and aspirations. When you inspire someone, you create a spark that encourages them to move beyond their current state and take steps towards a desired outcome. Inspiration often involves showing what's possible, sharing stories of success, or aligning with someone's deeper purpose or passion. The way we do this is through curiosity. So you can ask questions like, what are you working on right now? Or what's got you excited when it comes to whatever it is that you could potentially help them with? And if it makes sense, you can offer them unique insights, resources, or share relatable stories of how you've achieved the goal that they're trying to achieve. Bonus points if you share stories of how you've helped your clients achieve the goals that this person is trying to achieve as well. The goal here is to position yourself as a helpful authority figure and show potential clients the kind of results that they can achieve with your guidance, and more importantly, make them feel like it's possible for them. And finally, after you've established a strong connection and built trust, it's time to move on to step number 3, which is to invite them to take the next step. In dating, this might be asking someone on the second date or something else. In your business, this is inviting them to dive deeper with you, whether that's booking a free call, signing up to your email list, or enrolling into a program. Here's where most coaches go wrong with this. They're really good at connecting with people and inspiring them, but they fail to make enough invites, which is why they don't make any money. In the end, the amount of money you make each month comes down to how many people you invite to work with you. But we also don't want to be like this other type of person who is also doing this wrong, just in a different way. This is the person who completely skips connecting with and inspiring the other person and just goes straight to the invite. These are the spammers or the needy people. And as Stephen Chandler said in The Prosperous Coach, needy is creepy. You don't want to be either one of these people. So the key here is to make genuine connections with the people you can help. Inspire them to feel like the thing you can help them do is possible for them. And when they're excited about this new opportunity, you invite them to take the next step with you. Connect, inspire, invite. If you've done a good job in the conversation, this should feel very natural. So here's a quick example. When I'm talking with people about building their business on YouTube or just leveraging a YouTube channel, I'll say, hey, do you have a YouTube channel? And they'll say, no, you know, I feel like I have to have all these like subscribers and followers, and I hear it's really hard to do YouTube and that kind of stuff, and it takes a very long time. And I say, well, it doesn't have to. I was making thousands of dollars from YouTube when I had 200 subscribers, and it's been able to continuously grow. And I don't have a massive channel, but I still make plenty of money from YouTube. Primarily, that's one of my ultimate drivers in my business is just YouTube, and then I do podcasting as well. So I don't really do any social media. When I share that story with people, they feel inspired and say, wait, how does that work? And when I explain how it can work for them and the opportunity that they have by pursuing YouTube and having a good backend system, you know, and all that kind of stuff, that's when they get really excited and they're inspired by that. And then from there I can say, well, "If you want to, I'd be happy to sit down on a call with you and we can chat more about what I'm doing with my YouTube channel and just chat more about how you can use it as well." And that is our strategy session. They'll be like, "Yeah, let's do it." From there, we can talk about maybe working together if it makes sense. That's how simple this stuff really is. Now, here's how to use this formula to have your business working for you 24/7. Imagine your coaching business like a well-oiled machine. Every part needs to function correctly for the whole system to work seamlessly. When I started my coaching business back in 2018, It was more like a rusty old car. I was constantly putting out fires, doing everything manually, and struggling to keep things moving. But once I implemented the right processes, automations, and systems, it started running like a top-of-the-line sports car. The engine kept running even when I wasn't actively in the driver's seat, which sounds a little sketchy, but hey, that's the key to having your business work for you 24/7. And this isn't as complicated as you might think. You just need these 4 things put into place. The first thing we need is evergreen content. Just like a machine needs fuel to keep running, your business needs content that continuously attracts and engages potential clients. The key, though, is to create evergreen content. Think blog posts, podcasts, and YouTube videos. These are constantly searchable, shareable, and provide ongoing value that educates your audience on a deeper level. This content should be designed to move people through the stages of your business building formula: connect, inspire, invite. But the beauty of these evergreen platforms is that they're being consumed by people while you're not actively working. It's up to you to connect with your target audience by making relevant content, answering their questions, inspiring them to take action towards their goals and believe that what you can help them do is possible for them, and then inviting them to take the next step, which is our second piece, a lead magnet. This lead magnet should kickstart a funnel, which we'll get to in a minute. But think of lead magnets and funnels as the conveyor belts in your business machine. They continuously bring in new potential clients and guide them through the process of becoming paying clients, even when you're not directly involved. So inside of your free content, your action step or your invite is to promote your lead magnet. This is something free you give people in exchange for their email that quickly solves a persistent problem that your audience faces. Lead magnets can come in the form of PDF downloads, helpful templates, checklists, exclusive video or audio trainings, or even quizzes. What makes a lead magnet unique is that it requires an email opt-in in order to get access to it. But don't make it too complicated. It's just a piece of content. And once they opt in, that will trigger this next piece, which is number 3, an email funnel. As soon as people opt in for your lead magnet, that will kickstart your email funnel automatically. Now, an email funnel is designed to nurture leads towards making a purchase or booking a call after they've opted in. And the beautiful part about this is that it's happening on autopilot. Every time somebody opts in, that is sending people also through your email funnel. Each email in your sequence should inspire this person further on their journey and invite them to go to your sales page where they can purchase your product, which leads me to the fourth critical component in this, and that is a digital product. Wouldn't it be amazing to get random notifications of money being sent to your bank account when you're not working? Well, that's what's possible when you focus on building digital products. Don't get me wrong, coaching is great and I love it. I still do it to this day, but the problem with private coaching is that it just isn't scalable, meaning that you have to continuously trade your time for money and be on the call in order to help the person. Digital products, on the other hand, are scalable. They allow you to essentially print money out of thin air. There's no limit to the amount you can sell. Your revenue grows as your audience grows, and they don't require any upfront storage, packaging, or shipping like physical products do. They cost little to create, they're easy to update, and you can sell to anyone, anywhere, at any time with no limit to the amount you can sell. Talk about a bargain. Digital products can come in the form of ebooks, software, membership sites or communities, or my all-time favorite, online courses. And if you want a full deep dive on how to build great digital products that get 90% completion rates like my client Constance, I put together a full masterclass on this that's completely free. It's gonna show you how to earn $2,000 per month from digital products without complicated tech. There's a link in the description and you can always go to profityourknowledge.com/masterclass. The key to having your business work for you 24/7 is to connect, inspire, invite on a one-to-many platform. YouTube is a great example. It's by far my favorite, but speaking on stages can bring in a ton of revenue as well after you've left the stage when you have a system like this in place. It's about having a solid backend system that can take a client from not knowing much about you to becoming a paying customer automatically. That being said, here is the biggest mistake that every coach makes when trying to hit $10K per month. Even if you've mastered Connect, Inspire, Invite, and you set your business up to run for you 24/7, you might still struggle to hit that $10K mark. Why? Because there's a bigger problem lurking beneath the surface, one that most coaches don't even realize they have. And if you're anything like me, I pushed this off for a long time and my business suffered because of it. It's not just about having the right strategy or systems in place. It's about targeting the right audience with a focused, Niche. You could be doing everything right, creating content, setting up automations, connecting with potential clients, but if your messaging isn't laser focused, you're missing the mark. You see, many coaches try to appeal to everyone thinking that that will bring in more clients, but when you try to serve everyone, you really end up serving no one. But don't worry, I got you covered. To solve this problem once and for all and ensure that your coaching business hits that $10K per month target consistently, you need to nail your coaching niche.
