A listener retired from physically demanding work and wonders if returning to full-time employment was a mistake. Ramit Sethi explains that extra income won't fix much if other parts of your life fall apart in the process, so the real question is what you're actually trading away.
I retired because every job I've had is very physical. Was that a mistake? Should I be working full time instead of independently? And I mean, I can make good money when it's good out, when it's nice out.
Look, I'm not going to tell you you have to go back to work. If you can work more in your financial situation at this stage, an extra couple thousand bucks actually makes a big difference. But the key thing is that even if you went back full time to work, do you think your financial situation would have really changed?
Probably not.
Yeah. How come?
Because something would fall apart.
Yes. Yeah.
I mean, because I used to work full time and we weren't any better off.
What we have to really realize from this conversation is, of course the amount matters, but you two make basically $120,000 a year. So it's not about the amount. You just have never had an honest conversation and knowledge about how money is supposed to work in your relationship.
