Ramit Sethi saved $350 washing clothes himself in Kyoto instead of using hotel laundry. He turned it into a way to explore the city. Then he spent more than that on custom notepads because he loves stationery, embodying his rule: spend big on what you care about, cut everything else.

Whenever we travel, we travel for a long time and we have to do our laundry at some point. And one time when we were in Kyoto, I put all the laundry in a bag and I realized it would have cost something like $400. Not on my watch. We took it into town and we did our laundry and it actually turned out to be this awesome adventure. So now every time we travel, we have made it a ritual that we're going to go find a laundry place and do our laundry and explore a part of the city that we haven't explored. And so we just dropped our laundry off for washing. We had lunch, and now we're going to see what the deal is in the laundry place. Okay, mission accomplished. Laundry is done. And why did I just save $350 on laundry and then I spent way more on two notepads that I just got custom-made. That is what I'm talking about when I say spend extravagantly on the stuff you love, which for me is a weird love of stationery, and cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't.
