“Should I make a major purchase right now?”

Ramit Sethi says to pause big purchases like houses, cars, and vacations to build your emergency fund faster when the economy looks shaky. Businesses cut spending immediately when markets drop. You should too, instead of waiting until you're forced to make worse choices.

Hell, no. This is one of the fastest and easiest ways that you can build up a fat emergency fund that will protect you, and that is to put on hold any major new discretionary purchases you were about to make that could be moving, because that has tons and tons of new costs. Could be buying a house or a car. I would pull back on that if possible. It could be taking a big vacation, unless you already save for it and have it safely in the bank. Even still, I would be thoughtful about it. You have to understand that most of us are guided by this idea. If I said I'm going to do it, I better do it. Otherwise I'm a failure. And what I want to emphasize to you is that you have to adapt when circumstances around you adapt. That means if the stock market drops day after day after day, if you realize there's tons of uncertainty in the market because of these idiotic tariffs and policies from the Trump administration, you need to build a life where things don't have to work perfectly in order for you to survive and thrive. In other words, you might lose your job, or that purchase for a car might end up costing you 5, 6, $10,000 extra beyond what you budgeted for. You need to still be able to survive if these things happen. And sometimes that means just waiting, oh, I don't need that car today. Let's not get it. Even though we told everyone we're going to get a new car, I want to say that businesses are really good at this. They see economic uncertainty, they immediately run their playbook. They start battening down the hatches. They stop hiring. Sometimes they do layoffs. They know what needs to happen. But individual households are not very good at this. They keep spending the same amount even though they see stuff in the news. And they wait until the world forces them to make really tough decisions. Don't wait for the world to force you to make tough, bad decisions. Make the tough decisions yourself. Do it right now.
