Ramit Sethi introduces a practical, step-by-step method for asking for raises. He contrasts average performers (who avoid asking) with top performers (who secure raises even in poor economies), claims to have helped students get raises over $10,000, and promises concrete scripts (email, planning conversation, in-person wording) plus rebuttals to common objections.

Think about asking for a raise tomorrow. What would you do? Would you know what to say? In fact, when you ask people why they haven't asked for a raise, a lot of them will come back at you and say, in this economy, I'm just lucky to have a job. But unfortunately, most of the people who say that are average performers. You see, there's a game being played around them that they don't even realize. Top performers, on the other hand, know that they can get a raise frequently, even in terrible economies, because they are invaluable to their company. How do I know this? Because I've helped many of my students get raises of over $10,000 in the worst economy in 70 years. I want to talk to you about how they do that. Going in for a raise does not involve some magical phrase, some magical pixie dust that you sprinkle on, and everyone just gives you money. No, it's a methodical plan that you go through everything from the email that you send, the plan that you develop with your manager, to walking in and what you say. Remember, it doesn't have to be adversarial, but your boss, by definition, will probably not want to hand over a big fat check of 5 or $10,000. It's important to understand what triggers would make them want to give you money. You'll learn the actual words you use in an email to set up a discussion about a raise. You'll learn the actual words you use when you go to plan that raise. And most importantly and most fun for me, you'll actually learn the exact words you use when. When you go in to get that raise. What are they going to say to try to dissuade you from asking for a raise, and how do you respond? All these things can be done in any economy, provided that, number one, you take the initiative to ask for a raise, and number two, you give them a real reason to write you that check. I want to show you how to do that. Sa.
