Ramit Sethi on why your childhood money struggles still shape you, even after you've made it. You can't erase the past, but you can choose a different story going forward by changing your job, your friends, your habits, or what you invest in.
Chapters
People who are in debt, they finally pay it off, but they constantly live in fear. They constantly use their debit cards, all kinds of stuff. And you see it with people who become very financially successful. They have millions of dollars in the bank, but they still agonize over getting a large Coke. The past follows us. We can't change where we came from, but we can decide on the story that we are crafting for ourselves going forward. In fact, if anything, I love hearing people who honor their past, who acknowledge where they came from, from, and they decide, this is what I'm going to do as part of the next chapter of my life. It could be changing jobs, it could be changing relationships, saying, these are the type of people I want to surround myself with. You know, in my case, it was deciding I want to be physically fit and I want to spend time and money and learn how to do it. That is one of the things I'm most proud of, because it wasn't destined to be.
