Srila Gopal Krishna Goswami explains that lust, described as an all-devouring enemy, compels people to commit sinful acts against their will. Krishna teaches that lust burns in the mind and senses like an unsatisfied fire. Devotional service practiced with other devotees redirects the mind and senses, giving strength to reject sense enjoyment and break free.

How is one forced into sinful acts even unwillingly? And what did Kṛṣṇa say? It is lust only, the all-devouring enemy of the living entity, which is always burning like fire and is never satisfied, never satiated. And it also, Kṛṣṇa also identifies where this enemy known as lust is residing in the mind and the senses. So we should recognize, as the Bhagavad-gītā emphasizes, that when devotional service is rendered in the association of devotees, then it— the devotional service becomes easier, and devotional service gives you the strength to reject sense enjoyment. Because devotional service is the medium through which you engage the mind and the senses In a positive way, rather than just telling them to be idle, Nāda Pancharādhna states, sarvopādi vinirmuktam tat mervela nirmalam rishikena rishikena sevna bhaktir uchatay, that by engaging the mind and the senses in the service of Rishikeshya, one can free oneself from the different entanglements.
