KRISHNA - the cause of all causes | SB 10.16.41-44 | Juhu | Nov 28, 2021 | Śrīla Gopāl Kṛṣṇa Goswāmī

In this devotional lecture, Śrīla Gopāl Kṛṣṇa Goswāmī leads a reading of Srimad‑Bhāgavatam, Krishna‑cena chapter 16, verses 41‑44, and provides a detailed exposition of the theological themes therein. He emphasizes Krishna’s identity as the cause of all causes, the embodiment of time, and the ultimate author of all Vedic scriptures. The talk weaves scriptural translation with responsive chanting, anecdotes about the Kaliya‑subduing pastime, and contemporary analogies to illustrate the Lord’s supreme power. Śrīla Goswāmī also discusses the importance of overcoming envy, cultivating contentment, and the practical duty of studying and distributing sacred texts, referencing the Bhagavatam marathon, the disciplic succession from Vyāsadeva to Prabhupāda, and the teachings of senior devotees such as Kṛṣṇa‑Mahāprabhu. The lecture blends scholarly exposition, devotional fervor, and motivational calls to action for devotees.

Om namah bhagavate vasudevāya. Om namah bhagavate vasudevāya. Om namah bhagavate vasudevāya. Om namah bhagavate vasudevāya. What chapter? What was the word?
44 is on the board.
Actually, you're reading from— okay. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Kṛṣṇa-cena, chapter 16, text 41 to 44. Is that right? Yes. Okay. Let's go to text 44. Okay. You read it 3 previous verses, translation, and this is the word meaning. You're saving my energy. Otherwise I'll cough. I have a bad cough.
Text 41, translation. Obeisances unto You who are Time itself, the shelter of time and the witness of time in all its phases. You are the universe and also its separate observer. You are its creator and also the totality of its causes.
Next word.
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, although appearing in different incarnations, can never be limited by time since he is time itself, the shelter of time, the witness of time in all its phases. Text 42nd and 43rd translation. Obeisances unto you who are the ultimate soul of the physical elements, of the subtle basis of perception, of the senses, of the vital air of life, and of the mind, intelligence, and consciousness. By your arrangement, the infinitesimal spirit souls falsely identify with the three modes of material nature, and their perception of their own true self thus becomes clouded. We offer our obeisances unto you, the unlimited Supreme Lord, the supremely subtle one, the omniscient personality of Godhead, who are always fixed in unchanging transcendence, who sanction the opposing views of different philosophies, and who are the power upholding expressed ideas and the words that express them. Text 44, word-to-word meaning. Namaham of essences. Ramana of authoritative evidence. Ulayam of the basis. Kave to the author. Shastra of the revealed scripture. Yonaye to the source. Pravrittaya, which encourages sense gratification, nivrattaya, which encourages renunciation, niramaya, to Him who is the origin of both kinds of scripture. Namaham. Nama'ah, nama'ah. Repeated obeisances. Translation: We offer our obeisances again and again to You who are the basis of all authoritative evidence, who are the author and ultimate source of the revealed scriptures, and who have manifested Yourself in those Vedic literatures encouraging sense gratification as well as in those encouraging renunciation of the material world. If we did not have the powers of perception and cognition, evidence could not be transmitted. And if we had no tendency to believe in particular modes of evidence, persuasion could not take place. All these processes— perception, cognition, persuasion, and transmission— takes place take place through the various potencies of the Supreme Lord. The Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, is Himself the greatest scholar and intellectual being. He manifests the transcendental scriptures within the hearts of great devotees like Brahmāṇa and Nārada, and in addition, He incarnates as Veda Vyāsa, the compiler of the Vedic knowledge. In multifarious ways, the Lord generates a variety of religious Scriptures which gradually bring the conditioned souls to the various phases of re-entry into the Kingdom of God.
Responsively.
Please repeat the translation responsibly. We offer our obeisances.
We offer our obeisances.
Again and again to You.
Again and again to You.
Who are the basis of.

All authoritative evidence.

Who are the author. Who are the author and ultimate source of the revealed scriptures and who have manifested yourself in those many literatures encouraging sense gratification as well as in those encouraging pronunciation of the material world.
Hare Kṛṣṇa!
Hare Kṛṣṇa! Krishna!
Krishna!
Hare Hare!
Hare Rāma!
Hare Rāma!
So, in the 10th Kanto, you read about wonderful part of Hinduism. Papa was very keen that, uh, living pastimes will not be presented. Therefore, Papa, when he went to the West, the first book that he was interested in was was the Kṛṣṇa book. Papa said, "I didn't know how long I would live. I wanted to make sure that you should just pass time." I presented it to the guru. "Thank you, my Lord." They gave her the Kṛṣṇa book. Slowly the Kṛṣṇa book, we just opened the sarakanda, read all the passages. And when you read the pastimes of the Lord, what do you discover? You discover that nothing is impossible for the Lord. He is sincere. He can steal. And the Lord's pastimes, right from the beginning, getting on that papu, went pusillanimous. And now, what do you see? The same pattern, which is, the Lord is performing to people in English. Kāliyā was a snake, and Dejavū snake, and Kāliyā and Mōchilī poisoned the whole river, and the poison Everything from his body was so strong that birds, they would be flying high in the sky, get affected. He would smell it and die. It was so powerful. And the Yamuna River is very pious when you ask for a shiv. And unfortunately, I think, what did he do? He had condemned it as killed him. And Krishna would be upset. My cowherd friends, my colleagues will not be able to come here because of him. Maybe false, no? But he does well. Even birds could not fly. So, Ayyappa was thinking that I am very powerful, and he was— he had gained jurisdiction over the river. But Krishna would also see, if he is not corrected, if he does not— if he does not elsewhere, and the Vrīdhwāsīs won't be able to enjoy watching. Sacred. So, Śrīla Prasāda and I were teaching. All the others, all the other gurus were proud. And Mādhavacristhānanda, you know, went there, said, "What are you doing, Mādhavacristhānanda?" The only— except the Kadamal tree, fortunately everything was affected. The birds could not fly, the trees and the plants, they all dried up because of the Kālīya's number of things of Papua. And so the Lord is very concerned about His Please. What is the Lord's mood? Hindi bhagavad-gītā Kṛṣṇa is saying, "Janma karma cha me." My parents and grandparents have both answered that. So, when you serve Kṛṣṇa, what do you need? Scholarly degree? When you serve Kṛṣṇa, what do you need? Scholarly degree. Say, "Oh, okay." He was a— he is a bookish person. So Krishna jumped from the top of the Garamanthi on Kāliya. And Kāliya had 101 hoods. He wore snakes on his 101 hoods. Kāryā was known as— what did he say? He had— anyone who is on his head, and Kṛṣṇa jumped on his head. And usually Kṛṣṇa would go to Yamunā and other— along with the pāla rāmīs, virtuous friends, to the inauguration of the Temple in Vietnam and I was there. Paramhansa Yogananda is a spiritual strength. If you want spiritual strength, you should worship. Of course, we are worshiping Paramahansa Yogananda, Paramahansa Yogananda also. This time, he said, 5 million. He went north of Bharatpur and region was called Kalyan. He wrapped up. He wrapped up inside the corridor in the middle of People go to movies. In movies, the hero fights with the villain. Am I right? At times it looks like the villain is about to win, and then just at the right time, the hero smashes him. Is that right? Yes? No? I know you don't watch movies now. So I think they got this concept from Krishna's pastime, because you see this pattern in Krishna's pastime. So, I got him, and the Lord inside his coils for 2 hours. And the Vṛndāvana siddhas, they couldn't believe it. They were panicking. Now it looks like our beloved Kṛṣṇa is going to be killed, because He was inside the coils of Kali. And in the other asuras, Worked together. We saw similar patterns. So everybody was very scared. Talaga! No, Krishna is gone. And for them, life without Krishna, even for a minute, was impossible. So Krishna was seen. "Jiguri." I am getting it actually. And, "Madhishura" also came. "Narmada" also came. And Kṛṣṇa's principal devotee. And they were more worried because this time when Kṛṣṇa went to Yamuna, He went without Mahārādhvādhāva. Usually, if you read the Kṛṣṇa book, you will see, the most of the devas will get away. Kṛṣṇa and Mahārādhāva was there. And Mahārādhāva on his own killed very few devas. He was very afraid. Who is that? Mahārādhāva. So, the Vṛkṣṇas were more scared Mahīśvārāja said, he didn't even take Bāla Rāja with him this time. So the Prithvāsīs went away. But Bāla Rāja, he knew who Kṛṣṇa is. Bāla Rāja appears with Kṛṣṇa, with the Lord of the sky, the Lord Rāma. When Lord Rāma appeared, Bāla Rāja also appeared. When he appeared in what form? What form? As a younger brother. When he was a younger brother, he used to get confused by his duties. In fact, after Radha was married and she, she was a lady, so there was nothing for her to do at home. Because everything she tried to do, Lakshman would already do it. Lakshman was always a step ahead. So she told Rādhā, "What is the use of my staying in your house? I don't have anything to do. Anything I want to do, Bāla Mādhava Lakshman does it before me." So then they went to the Guru. The Guru said, The homely activities that we were holding were overseen by Sita and the external by Lakṣmaṇa, the Veda-priest. So Lakṣmaṇa and Balarama, they were with us. So when the Lord was appearing as Kṛṣṇa, Lakṣmaṇa said, "I want to appear now as your older brother." Last time when I took birth, your younger brother, I was too confused. You would tell me one thing, Sita would tell me one thing. So this time, please make me your older brother. So he gave his birth. Then he came again and asked, Lord is saying, "No." So, Bala Ram, while the others were very nervous, scared, baham, he was smiling. He was saying, "Oh, these big baddies are worried. They don't know how strong my brother is." Balaram wasn't panicked. So Krishna was wrapped up in Balaram's coil, so in Kaliya's coil, and Kaliya saw that Over Krishna's fall, that is, Prasād RAVALA, very much in anxiety due to Krishna permitting Kāliya to wrap him in a coil, so Krishna jumped from the cowherd's rig and there was a fall. And for nearly 2 hours, Krishna was just a young, Krishna was just A small 5-year-old child, and he's a poor man, and he's by the time, poor, poor, poor, poor. So, Krishna was able to pull him to the outer point, Kaliya, and Nangabhati. These verses that you're reading now, I spoke in my Nangabhati. Who were they? They were Kaliya's wives. They used to tell Kaliya, "Don't fight with Kṛṣṇa. You don't know how powerful he is." And these nāgapatīs were Kaliya's wives. So nāgapatīs, how big these words are, you see. In these different verses, Nāgābhādṇīs, they are glorifying Kṛṣṇa, Om Namo Bhagavate. In these verses that we are reading today, we see that Kṛṣṇa is presented as the author of the Vedic scriptures. The Lord is the cause of all causes, and when the Lord appears, it performs for humanity. And if you want to understand the Lord's activities, you have to take to the path of the Guru. There are so many people who write books on the Supreme Lord, but present their own concocted theory. Prabhupāda very clearly presented that Kṛṣṇa is cheating. Prasad RAVALAL presented that in a pure form. It's like that. Bhagavad-gītā. Bhagavad-gītā as it is. What does it mean? Bhagavad-gītā in the spirit that Christians spoke and Arjuna received. That is Bhagavad-gītā as it is. So similarly, Lord Krishna's pastimes. If you want to hear them properly, if you want to genuinely understand them and take to the path of Bhakti. The preening is only the medium of bhakti. So Krishna is the cause of all causes. He is really the religion. Krishna is the cause of all causes. That's what we say, 'Īśvā parama-kṛṣṇa śrīdhara-nāma-kāraṇa' and 'āli-āli-govindā na mākāra-nām-kāraṇa'. Īśvara-parma-kṛṣṇa. There are many controllers, but You are the Supreme Controller. And You are also the— what?— cause of all causes. Sometimes people say, "If God is the cause of all causes, who is the cause of God?" What's the answer? Someone say. Nobody is His cause. That's why He is presented as His people. Prabhupāda Ji talks about it. Advaita vishuddha manādhya rāṇḍa-lūkā. The Lord manifests Himself in various forms. Just like over here, the reading was the Lord's name, Rādhārāṣyam. Then He took two, and then He went. So the Lord can appear in various forms. Myself was sad. Srinivasa was sad. Ate puranam purusham nam yonam purusham. You are the oldest of all. Even though you are the oldest of all, you appear ever— ever what? Youthful. We age with the passage of time. Does the Lord age? No. So we must understand, start with the nature of the Supreme Lord. We must understand God can do anything. Parashurama Muni, the father of Asad Raval, gives the definition of God. That person can be called God. Who is? Aśvarasya. He is richest of all. Do you know how rich Kṛṣṇa was? When he was in the Vāṣṭavān? Who knows? He had a palace for everyone, every wife. And the palace was not just painted gold.— actually gold type. He is the strongest of all. I mean, just see, in his past life, Mr. K. Le Parvath, he feeds himself with boiled dog. So he is the oldest, he appears ever youthful. So we must understand, God means being the greatest. And angarumupu, anyak yadi. So we don't say, this pastime of Kaliya, Krishna King, is imaginary, that is wrong. So the Nanda Bhaktis, they are very grateful. They had not agreed. When for a brief moment Kaliya was in the— Krishna was in the coils of Kaliya, then Annapati also were not happy. And then they prayed to the Lord, and the Lord responding to their prayer, eventually releaved. Whom? So Krishna is called upon father and he, he must not anger. In the words we're doing today, in the 4 words, is reference to 2 different points. One is time. What is time? There is a Time magazine, very famous, called Time. But it's not that Time magazine that the voice is referring to. Time is the representative of the Supreme Lord. And what does time do? What does it do? Destroys everything. You have a handsome body, time will make sure you remain handsome for long. You have a melodious voice, time will make sure it will remain melodious for long. Your muscles are strong, time will make sure the muscles become weak. Time destroys everything. And one is intelligent, recognize this fact. Once a lawyer, has received notice from Yama and Raju. You are going to die. Yama and Raju, they have come to take Lord Bhagavan. So the Bhagavan said, Yama and Raju, you cannot take me now. If you want to take me, you have to give me notice. So, 'Namaste.' Notice, I gave you so many notices that death is already approaching. You ignore all of that. 'Oh, how many hairs do you have on your head now?' He said, 'Nam.' 'I'm born like a Hare Krishna.' 'And how many hairs did you have?' 10 years ago, my head was full of hair. How strong are your legs now? Now I can't even walk, you know, with the chair. And how strong were your legs 20, 30 years ago, 40 years ago? I was part of the Indian Olympic team. So, Vyam Prasad, Your hair started falling, your ears started getting weak, your fingers started getting weak, your legs started getting weak, your eyes started becoming weak. And he said, I didn't give you any warning. I gave you so many warnings to come. So time is the representative of the spirit world. We are constantly getting Notice it. Do we pay any attention to it? No. Don't pay any attention. Therefore he says, Śrīla Kīrtana Mahāprabhu's quotes are very respected by Vaishnavas. Prabhupāda said, "They were as good as Vyāsa Deva." So what does Śrīla Kīrtana Mahāprabhu say? Higṣakaśaraya-kopīna abhayāśvaraṇa-koti-miṣra. Amīrindraś. Cannot be made up with the wealth of the entire world. So in one of the verses, it is being said that time is, time is the ultimate villain, and time destroys everything. So what does this mean? This means that you should not waste even one minute We should not waste time in idle activities, in activities that are not productive, in activities that make you, who cares. Rather, we should use our time in what? What should we use our time in? In serving the Lord. So, 'chai' means the Representative of the Lord. Time is one of the subject matters of study of Bhagavad-gītā. The Kṛṣṇa says, "Time I am." "You are time," Vishvāmitra is saying. So, nangaradapadmi is saying, "You are the shelter of time and you are time." Then further, the voice talks about The Lord being the source of all the scriptures. So scripture means what? Namaṁ te sakṣād. I will— Religion means the words of God. So religion is not something that can be fabricated by anyone. Can we do that? Can you? Are you empowered to make laws for the country. So the government is. So similarly, the Dharma means the laws of God, and the laws of God, if you follow it, you get full benefit. So any purport saying the Transcended Scriptures were inspired by— how to say that? The Lord gave us knowledge by which you can have sense enjoyment and knowledge by which your devotional service will be executed. Vyāsadeva had compiled the Vāsuvādika literature. In spite of Having transcribed the entire Vedic literature, Vyasadeva still felt that there was a vacuum, some deficiency in his presentation. What did Vyasadeva do? What did he do? He went to his guru. And he said, "I have compiled all this vast literature, but I still feel there is some vacuum in my world." And Nārada said, "You have not— you have not— you have passed off the whole world." In a way, there is no doubt, there is knowledge. But that knowledge is also in the area of sense enjoyment. Whereas Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge, 'higāma-karbha-grhoh'— 'hāritām-pādaḥ'— the ripened fruit of Vedic knowledge is descending from where? It is descending from the spiritual world. And Prabhupāda explained, it has been passed down from one person to another, sitting in different branches. And Prabhupāda ended up in saying, you throw a fruit from the top of the tree, then when the fruit hits the ground, what will you find? Broken into pieces. But if on the other hand, The fruit is passed down through different individuals, different branches. Then they receive the fruit, it will be what? Intact. So this Śrīvān Bhāgavatam, as we presented, as a— So this Śrīvāda Mahābhāgavata, the right-hand foot of Vedic knowledge, presented by Yaśodā. Yaśodā was the daughter of Ganda Rishi. She presented this as a pure devotee. And Śrīvāda Mahābhāgavata It's so important. Recently you took part in the marathon for distribution of Bhāgavatam. How many of you took part in the Bhāgavatam marathon? So why is the letter from Prabhupāda in which he says, "I want every householder in India to have a copy of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam." SET and Chaitanya Charitramrita. This is the Bible of Vedic knowledge. And the Chaitanya Charitramrita is a postgraduate education. So Prasad RAVAL gave us his translation of the literature and it was compiled by Kirti Sagar by the law. Peel head. So the Lord appears as a wise man and gives us this potter's knowledge. And Śrīla Prabhupāda continues, the highest knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda believes with the highest philosophy. Therefore, one should study it with an attentive mind. So Nagarjuna's angapattinis, the wives of Kaliya, they were very happy that at last their husband was released, and they were very happy that their husband had accepted whom? Krishna and all the Supreme Lord. Kālīya admitted. When he was— he started fighting with the Lord, and he was in the grip of the Lord. Kālīya understood. "Yes, it's my fault. I am not the Supreme. I am not the Supreme. Who is the Supreme?" It is the Supreme. The sapigāhas sometimes get puffed up also. That's life. And they go and read up. What do you see? In the Vāgabhāgavatam, the Lord having stopped in the Indra-yāgya, Indra's love, and in the He saw that the British Vazis are going to give up his historical pastime. He had been in the form of a British Vazi for a long time. He decided to— what did he decide? Teach in Madras. And the warning came, "I will be informed." He should drop a word of was like a pillar. But then he didn't realize when he ordered this, it was like a bottle to release water. Like Kṛṣṇa. He died that way. He saw, in spite of the heavy rainfall, Kṛṣṇa was under the shroud. And everybody was in. They were just meditating in Kṛṣṇa. And after 7 days, Indra saw that he was no match. He was like a little drooler, for the clouds were strong. So the point is, in these past times, you see, all the prominent jibigars, Also acknowledging what? That Kṛṣṇa is. In the Śiva, Brahmā, all the principles of the world. In the Bhāgavad-gītā Kṛṣṇa says, in the Bhāgavad-gītā Kṛṣṇa says that, "I am the Summits of everything." Chira is Kṛṣṇa. And you got to acknowledge the Bhāgavad-gītā. Kṛṣṇa says, "With ye she serveth, I am ever with you." Jāntakrīṣṇa veda veda. I am the source of the spiritual path. I am the source of the Veda. So we must understand, Vedic literature emanates from the Supreme Lord, and it gives us perfect transcendental knowledge. And to understand this, You have to free yourself from one important defect. What is that? Envy. Kṛṣṇa says, "I am imparting this knowledge to you because you are my most confidential friend and devotee." Therefore, you can understand the dances of the gopīs, the gopīs. So the Bhagavad-gītā is a great science. It will only be heard by one who is not enemies of the Lord. This is important to understand. Enemy is a deep-rooted enemy, and therefore we should avoid being enemies. In the Jñāna-saṇḍana Veda, you read about a devotee called Amoga, and he really— Amoga was a son-in-law, and Amoga was a charioteer. So he was always envious of Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya, wherever He would travel, He would be invited by different devotees of Prasada. So Amoga, Who would sneakily reach the window and place his ears to the wall, see if we can call and something offensive. So, Pārthasarīya knew how mobile I was and we had spoken. So, Pārthasarīya, Pārthasarīya would never do anything wrong. So Amoga later on, whatever, he died. Severe disease called cholera. He was virtually on his deathbed. So Gopinath Acharya was the— was he the previous president or— no, he's anyhow nice. Gopinath. Abhi Amoga. He is sick, he is about to die, he is very sick. So Rāuḍhācārya did not want Māgā to disappear, for he would greatly embarrass, inconvenience his devotee, Rāuḍhācārya. So Lord Caitanya went to see a Mughal. Mughal was lying on a bed. Lord Caitanya kept his hand on the chest of that Mughal and said, "As long as you have envy in your heart, Kṛṣṇa will not fall beside over that." He will get the enemy out of your heart. So in these verses also, he references very clearly. And so envy is deep-rooted. And if you have envy, what happens? You don't get the mercy of the Lord. So envy should be ignored, no, envy should be overtaken. You, like the German, What do you see? Everyone is envious of each other. Is that right or wrong? A is envious of B, B is envious of C. You buy a fancy new car, your neighbour will get envious. "Oh, what a car, better than mine." You make money, then somebody becomes envious. Envy is deep rooted. A question may be asked, "How can I give up envy?" Lord Caitanya said, as long as you have envy in the heart, Lord will not reside. That's lying. This is garbage. Like outside our temple, there's a garbage can. Will you ever sit down next to the garbage can and eat? Huh? No. Why? Why? But it is filthy. So Kṛṣṇa doesn't like to sit in an enemy's heart. As long as you keep enemy in your heart, Kṛṣṇa will not reside over there. And how do you overtake an enemy? Huh? By chanting. By chanting, doing Vajra-kriya, as we always say, you can go to the Anātā. And one of the anātās is envy. So envy should be overtaken by greed to serve Kṛṣṇa. We don't say give up all types of greed. There is spiritual greed. I want to get attached to the Holy Name. I want to get attached to philosophy. I want to get attached to sadhu. That is positive. And negative is using every facility for sense enjoyment and being envious. Usually when we are envious, we actually end up ruining ourselves. No one is your bigger enemy than you yourself. So let's say your enemies are A, B, C, D. You are just bickering over the Kurshila. Therefore, if somebody has some ability which you don't have, no need to be envious. Kṛṣṇa gives everyone some abilities. Vishnu gives everyone some abilities, so you should accept. This is what the Lord has given me, this is what the Lord has given him. Be satisfied. One of the essential characteristics for devotional service is to be content. Santuṣṭhayena kīrovaḥ. Be content with what is provided by the will of the Lord. If you are content, then you will be able to please the Lord, you won't have envy. Whereas on the other hand, if I am always envious of my neighbour, even in spiritual life, we have seen some of the prominent preachers, the others will say, "Oh, Bhaktivedānta Swāmi Mākhārājā, ame hāga kāye te pīśkipāda, aṁ so 'hippi'kiva jāra reṣāte." So we didn't go to America. So many of us, many of these devotees didn't go abroad. So it's not that enemy is only active in material life. Enemy is also active in spiritual life. So we overcome enemy, they can overcome enemy by elevating spiritual motive. So, enge, enge, enge, enge. In conclusion, what is being stated in the book, the Lord is the source of all the spiritual knowledge. And spiritual knowledge, when accepted through a disciplic succession, we give out the reasons for that. So, envy should be overcome, and Kṛṣṇa is the source of all the spiritual knowledge. And Kṛṣṇa incarnated as Vyāsadeva. So Vyāsadeva presents to us authorized scriptures. And what do we do with these scriptures? What do we do?
Huh?
We try and study them and distribute them. Studying these books is also very important. And if you regularly study these books, then the desire to increase book distribution will also be there. Everybody knows the book marathon has started? Started or not started? Started. Started. The buses are on the road. And at one time the marathon was so organized, you know, in the Western countries, you would not see one man in the temple. Everyone was out. So I think all of you are also well-versed in Hāmṣa, in every Kaipa marathon here. This is our present If you want to please me, then what do we do? Yes, sir.
