Kṛṣṇa Became Servant of Pāṇḍavas | Rus-Split | SB 1.16.16 | 28 Jan 1992 | Gopal Krishna Goswami

In this extensive lecture, the speaker (Gopal Krishna Goswami) expounds on the verse Srimad‑Bhagavatam 1.16.16, illustrating how Lord Krishna served the Pandavas in many humble roles—chariot driver, messenger, friend, night‑watchman—demonstrating the reciprocal relationship between the Supreme and His unalloyed devotees. Drawing on the Nectar of Devotion, the teachings of Rupa Goswami, and numerous scriptural anecdotes (including those of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Madhvendra Puri, and the gopis), the discourse outlines the nature of pure bhakti, the rarity of devotional service, and the six factors (enthusiasm, determination, patience, etc.) that cultivate love of God. The lecture then addresses practical questions from a devotee (Prasad Raval) covering topics such as familiarity among devotees, maintaining constant enthusiasm, the value of unconscious service, attitudes toward other religions and science, the role of demigods versus the Lord, and the concept of continual devotional rebirth. Throughout, the speaker emphasizes that Krishna’s service is driven by causeless mercy, that devotion must be sincere and disciplined (vaidhī‑bhakti), and that true renunciation is inseparable from love of God.
Questions this video answers
Familiarity arises when a devotee spends extensive time with another, especially senior devotees, and begins to treat them as ordinary, losing respect; this can lead to contempt, as illustrated by examples from Srila Prabhupada’s environment.
By maintaining a disciplined sadhana: chanting rounds each morning, reading at least an hour daily, staying actively engaged in service, and controlling the mind, which is the primary obstacle to enthusiasm.
Yes; serving without expecting benefit still yields spiritual merit, as exemplified by book distribution where the distributor may not know the benefit yet still accrues it.
Devotees should always speak the truth about Vedic teachings, presenting them palatably, and challenge scientists to provide proof of God’s existence.
Demigods operate under Krishna’s direction, providing the material means (sunlight, air, etc.) for activity, while the devotee is directly under the Lord’s control.

Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, First Canto, Chapter 16, Text 16. Sarātya parāśada sevana sākya dhotyā Sri Vishnu. Hindi. English. So we see in this verse that as Parīkṣit Mahāj was traveling all over the globe, he heard from people about the wonderful reciprocation that was executed between the Lord and the Pāṇḍavas. These days, when the head of state— these days all over the world, in every country, No head of state can command loyalty from all the citizens. But because Parīkṣit Mahārāja was a great devotee of the Lord, a descendant of the Pāṇḍavas, he was respected and honored all over his kingdom. So in this verse, various pastimes that the Lord performed with the Pāṇḍavas are being mentioned. It is being explained that the Lord served the Pāṇḍavas by becoming their chariot driver, messenger, friend, night watchman. In other words, the Lord performed various functions by which He served the Pāṇḍavas rather than taking service from them. In The Nectar of Devotion, Rūpa Gosvāmī has listed various characteristics of devotional service, one of which is that devotional service is very rarely achieved. Because through the process of bhakti, one is able to capture the Lord. Otherwise, to capture the Lord is impossible. Rūpa Gosvāmī has explained that the Lord will even award mukti, but very rarely He awards bhakti, because bhakti is the weapon by which the Lord can be captured. So this is the unique relationship between the Lord and His devotee. The devotee is always anxious to serve the Lord. But the Lord is also anxious to serve the devotee. The Pandavas were unalloyed devotees of the Lord, and the Lord appeared as their cousin. And when the Lord was present, He acted just like a normal human being. For example, when Bhīsmadeva was leaving his body, all the Pandavas went over there, and Lord Kṛṣṇa, along with Yudhiṣṭhira, offered obeisances to the dying Bismadeva. In the first chapter of the Bhāgavad-gītā, we see that when Arjuna was being asked to participate in the battle, he asked Arjuna, "Please place my chariot in the midst of the two armies so that I can see who the assembled warriors are." So just imagine, the Supreme Personality of Godhead became the chariot driver of His friend and devotee Arjuna. When the Pandavas returned from exile, they asked Duryodhan to return their kingdom, which he refused. Then the Pandavas told him, "Okay, you don't want to return our whole kingdom, just give us 5 villages, one for each brother." When this was also turned down, then the Lord personally went as a messenger to Duryodhan, begging him not to, begging him to cooperate with the Pandavas. But it was only when Duryodhana refused to even, uh, pay attention to the message of the Lord, the battle eventually took place. So one who understands the greatness of God understands that in order to please His devotee, the Lord also becomes a servant of the devotee. So this is the unique transcendental relationship between the Lord and His devotee. So Parīkṣit Mahārāja, as he was traveling and hearing from the citizens in the various kingdoms about the wonderful activities that the Lord had performed, by hearing these activities he became more and more attached to the Supreme Lord. In material existence, when you hear of something once, twice, thrice, you get tired and then you want to hear of something fresh. But the nature of spiritual topics is such That the more you hear, the more you feel like hearing, and there's no question of ever getting tired. So the devotee is always anxious to hear, just like Parīkṣit Mahārāja. Parīkṣit Mahārāja was fasting to death, but even though he was fasting both from food and water, in the 10th canto of the Bhāgavatam, he requests Śukadeva Gosvāmī to describe to him further the glories of the Lord, because he was deriving such great pleasure in hearing the glories of the Lord that he wanted more and more explanations. Ye yatha mām prapadeyante. Kṛṣṇa clearly states in the Bhāgavad-gītā that all of them as they surrender unto Me, I will reward them accordingly. In other words, Kṛṣṇa reciprocates in proportion to a degree of surrender. Because the Pāndavas are completely surrendered to the Lord, Because they knew nothing except the Supreme Lord, the Lord also acted in various capacities, always to save the Pandavas. When Bhishma Deva was getting ready to leave the planet, Yudhishthira and his brothers and the Lord were all assembled at his bedside. Bhishma Deva was recalling how the Lord was protected from the most difficult— how the Pandavas were protected from the most difficult situations by the Lord and religion. So if one is surrendered to the Lord, then the Lord and the principles of religion come to one's rescue. Chaitanya Mahāprabhu was on a tour of southern India, and he was coming out of one of the temples in southern India when he saw that a man had a Bhāgavad-gītā in front of him and he was crying, and there was a huge crowd of people. Gathered around him laughing. So when Caitanya Mahāprabhu saw this huge crowd laughing, he went inside to find out what the reason was. And then he saw there was an uneducated man sitting down with a Bhāgavad-gītā that he was holding upside down, and he was just crying. So Caitanya Mahāprabhu asked this man why was he crying. So the man said, that his spiritual master had instructed him to read one chapter of the Bhāgavad-gītā every day, but being uneducated, he is unable to read. But he said, "Still, what is the need to cry?" And then that devotee said, "When I see that Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord, is driving the chariot of His devotee Arjuna, my heart cries at seeing the humility the God is displaying." Then Caitanya Mahāprabhu embraced his devotee and said, "You have really understood the Bhāgavad-gītā." Another great devotee of the Lord, Madhvinder Puri. He had just completed his vrikrama of the Govardhana and he was tired and he was resting underneath a tree. A young, beautiful village boy, cowherd boy came over there and brought him some milk. Madhvinder Puri was surprised. How did this cowherd boy know that he was hungry? The cowherd boy said that some ladies who had come to take water from the well noticed that he was resting underneath the tree, so they requested him to bring this milk to, to him. And later on, when he had a dream in the night, he realized that that cowherd boy was none else but Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But Kṛṣṇa disguised Himself as an ordinary cowherd boy to serve His devotee, and He brought milk for him. Rūpa and Sanātan were living underneath a different tree in Vṛndāvana every day. They were eating very simple prasāda, dry chapati and salt. One day Rūpa Gosvāmī had gone out on pilgrimage and Sanātan was alone at home, was alone underneath the tree. A very beautiful young girl came with different varieties of foodstuff. And she offered to Sanatana Gosvāmī. So when Rūpa Gosvāmī returned to take prasāda along with his brother Sanatana, he saw that there was so much variety of foodstuff present over there. So he said, "Where did he get all this foodstuff from? Usually we just have dry chapatis and salt. Where did he get this rich variety of foodstuff from?" He said a very beautiful young girl had come and she offered this variety of foodstuff for us to consume. To which Rupa Gosvāmī said, "This young girl was Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, who disguised herself as a young girl. Why did you take service from Rādhārāṇī?" And he chastised his brother for having accepted this foodstuff from her. So these are just some examples. There are many more examples that we could cite. But the point that is being made is this, that the Lord is anxious to serve the unalloyed devotee even though the devotee doesn't want the Lord to serve him. The devotee is anxious to sacrifice everything for the Lord, and therefore the Lord told the rāsa-muni that, "My devotees are so dear to Me that they reside in My heart and I reside in their heart." Therefore, Queen Kunti has very nicely prayed to the Lord: Nama se puruṣam svādham īśvaram prakrte param lakṣmaṣarva-bhūtanam antaḥ bahair avasthitam. She says, "My dear Lord, I am offering my obeisances unto You because You are residing both within and outside everything, and You are the cause of all causes." So the Supreme Personality of Godhead can be captured by only, but only by the process of bhakti. Therefore, in the Vedic scriptures it is said, which means that if we try to understand the Lord by one's material senses, one will be baffled. But if one takes to the seva, seva, If one takes the path of devotion, then he can understand the Lord. So this path of Bhakti-yoga is the path of devotion to the Lord. And in this path one learns the technique of offering the mind and the senses in service to the Lord. And as the mind and the senses are offered in service to the Lord, the purification begins. It is said, sarva-pādī vinir-muktaṁ tat parvena nirmalam. Rīṣikīṇa rīṣikīṇa sevṇa-bhaktir ucyate. It is said in the Nārada-pañcarādṇa that by utilizing the senses in service of Rīṣikesha, the owner of the senses, one becomes free from the various designations and thus develops love of God. Generally people take to dharma, religion, for the purpose of realizing their different material desires. Dharma, artha, kama, moksha. As a result of the following some religious principles, they want artha, economic wealth. And they want economic wealth because economic wealth is a medium to sense enjoyment. And once they've had enough sense enjoyment and they're still not satisfied, then they want to become liberated, moksha. However, by taking to dharma for the purpose of material goals This relationship with the Lord cannot be realized. This unique relationship with the Lord can only be realized if one takes to the path of unalloyed devotion. What is the difference between unalloyed devotion and devotion? Rūpa Gosvāmī has explained in Bhaktirasamhita-sindhu, anihā vilāsida sunyam jñāna-karma-dhyānārvatam anukalena Kṛṣṇa-o silālēm bhaktaḥ uttamaḥ. Rūpa Gosvāmī explains, that on the path of pure devotion one has absolutely no desire but the desire to serve the Lord. He says, "I don't want to have, I don't want to merge into the impersonal process or have any yogic siddhis. All I want is the opportunity to serve You." This mood of pure devotion has also been exemplified by Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Caitanya Mahāprabhu instructed His disciples to write volumes of books. Rūpa Gosvāmī wrote volumes of books. Dīvā Gosvāmī wrote volumes of books. But he himself left behind only 8 verses. So Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, "My dear Lord, You can even trample me to death, but You shall always remain my worshipful Lord unconditionally." Caitanya Mahāprabhu has also said, nadhanam janajanam nasundaram kavitāmba jagadīśakamaye. "Māmā janmīni janmēśvare bhāvatar bhaktir eṭho kītyāi." "My dear Lord, I don't want materialistic followers or women or wealth. All I want is the opportunity to serve You birth after birth." Vyāsadeva, even after having compiled the vast Vedic literature, was still feeling despondent. And later it was analyzed by Nārada Muni, his spiritual master. That the cause of his unhappiness was that the process of pure bhakti was not explained. Therefore in the Bhāgavatam it is said: Sāve punsām paro dharmo yato bhakti-adhaukṣudye, ahaituky pratyātā yātmāṣupracīdati. That is, the self can only be satisfied when one engages in paro dharmo, pure devotion. And the Bhāgavatam further explains: Vāsudeva-bhāgavatī bhaktiyoga-prayojitāḥ. Jñānya te āśivirāgyam gyanam chāyed haikvaka. That is, by rendering devotional service, one develops causeless knowledge and detachment. So causeless knowledge and detachment. In other words, the first step is the cultivation of knowledge, and once you have knowledge, only then can detachment develop, because unless detachment develops, one cannot get attached to the Supreme Lord. So somehow or the other we have to mold our lives in such a manner that we get attached to Kṛṣṇa. Whether one is a brahmācārī or a sannyāsi or a grihastha living at home and doing some job, we have to examine how can we get attached to Kṛṣṇa and the process of bhakti. This detachment becomes feasible by spiritual association and by the execution of devotional principles. Just like Narada Muni, when he was asked by Vyāsa Deva how he had obtained this very exalted position, Narada Muni explained how in his previous birth he had the fortune of associating with great sages, eating the remnants of foodstuff left by them, hearing them give sermons, and then he developed such detachment that even when his mother died, he was not at all disturbed, but he just used this opportunity before they depend on the Lord. So this process of devotional service is so powerful that anybody who comes in contact with this process is going to get the spiritual benefit, knowingly or unknowingly. Just like anybody who places his hand in the fire gets his hand burned, similarly, knowingly or unknowingly, anybody who chants or executes the process of bhakti it gets the spiritual benefit. So the devotee of the Lord has the firm conviction that my Lord will always protect me. Rūpa Gosvāmī has explained that hoping against hope, the devotee has the full confidence that my Lord will always protect me. Therefore the devotee recognizes, ekalā īśvā Kṛṣṇaḥ arṣa-bhrataya, that Kṛṣṇa is the only master and all others are subordinate, his servants. So in the material world, people have so many masters, but devotees only have one master. And by executing that one master's instructions, they become fully satisfied. So one should take to the process of devotional service with complete conviction. In the translation, it is said that because Parikṣit Mahārāja was hearing these pastimes with great devotion. He became very attached to the Lord. So we have to hear the pastimes of the Lord with great devotion and determination. Rūpa Gosvāmī has stated: Utsahā-nestraya-dhārya-tattvātkarma-pramartanāt sāṅgatyāge satobhrayate. He has said there are 6 factors as a result of which one can develop love of God. First, of course, is Utsaha, which means determination, which means enthusiasm. One should be enthusiastic to serve in all conditions. Then one should be determined, nishtayat. And Prabhupada in the Bhagavad-gītā gives the example of the sparrow that had her eggs stolen by the ocean, but she was determined to dry up the ocean to get her children back, and how the ocean returned the eggs because of her determination. Then there has to be patience, dhāryat. It's not that now we've taken to the process of devotional service, you should think that Kṛṣṇa is going to come and speak to you or serve you the way He served Arjuna or the way He served the Gosvāmīs. Many times people take to the process of bhakti, they begin to chant, and after some time they say, "Oh, why isn't Kṛṣṇa coming and talking to me? Why is this difficulty happening to me?" In other words, they lack patience. Tat tat-karma-pravartanat. Follow the rules and regulations that have been established by the great Ācāryas. We don't speculate on the process of advancement because the philosophy has been clearly stated by Vyasadeva and explained by his successors. Sāṅgatyāge. Give up the association of non-devotees. In other words, We associate with non-devotees only for the purpose of enlightening them, but not being influenced by them. With non-devotees, but you associate with them not to be influenced by them, but rather to influence them. And sato vṛte, um, follow the greater ācāryas, follow the example set by the great sādhus. In the purport, Prabhupāda is saying that simply by appreciating the pastimes of the Lord with His devotees, one can make spiritual advancement. In other words, by taking part in Kṛṣṇa-kathā, by discussing Kṛṣṇa's wonderful pastimes with His devotees, the hearer is able to make spiritual advancement. So the Pāṇḍavas sacrificed everything for the Lord, and the Lord reciprocated. So similarly, When we as aspiring devotees also sacrifice everything to the Lord, the Lord will also reciprocate in the same degree, same proportion. You can't surrender to the Lord 20% and expect 100%, uh, uh, reciprocation from the Lord. Kṛṣṇa reciprocates in proportion to our surrender, and that has been clearly stated again and again. Surrendering to Kṛṣṇa becomes easier Once you are convinced about the philosophy that Kṛṣṇa is presenting in the scriptures, by regularly hearing the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, all that is inauspicious in the heart is destroyed and loving devotional service unto the Lord is established. Because as we regularly hear the Bhāgavatam, we remind ourselves of the importance of serving the Lord, and that will give us the determination to take to the path of bhakti. Therefore, Rūpa Gosvāmī has given us the process of vaidhī-bhakti. Vaidhī-bhakti means the execution of devotion by following rules and regulations. And as we execute the process of vaidhī-bhakti, ultimately you realize rāgānuga-bhakti, or the stage of spontaneous love for God. But that stage can be achieved only after we have followed the rules and regulations rigidly for a period of time. So just like the small child is always dependent on the Lord, the devotee is also dependent upon the Lord. And the Lord reciprocates as the devotee surrenders to Him. And this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is designed to convince us that since we have to surrender, why not surrender to the Supreme Lord, as this is the instruction of the Lord and the mission of human life. In the execution of devotional service, We should always remember Caitanya Mahāprabhu's advice that we accept everything favorable for spiritual advancement and we reject everything unfavorable for spiritual advancement. So it is favorable for spiritual advancement to hear about Kṛṣṇa-kathā, and unfavorable for spiritual advancement is prajñālpa. So just like Parikṣit Mahārāja is getting more and more attached to the Lord by hearing the wonderful pastimes of the Lord and the devotees, Similarly, as we hear Kṛṣṇa-kathā more and more, we will also get more and more attached to the Lord. One last point that is stated in this verse which should be recognized is that the Lord appears and serves His devotee out of His causeless mercy. Causeless mercy means that you get something without feeling qualified to get it. So the devotee never feels that in exchange for my devotion or service that I'm doing, I should be entitled to this reciprocation. But the Lord, out of His own causeless mercy, reciprocates with the devotee. So we should meditate on these wonderful pastimes and thereby increase our attachment to the Lord. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Mahāprabhu.
What is familiarity and how it develops in the interrelationship? Between devotees, and what can be the results of that familiarity?
Well, familiarity means you begin to take the other devotee— especially familiarity with senior devotees, that is more important— that you see a senior devotee with you all the time, and then you begin to treat him like an ordinary devotee, and you lose respect for him. There's a statement in English, "Familiarity breeds contempt." That means you may be serving a very exalted personality, but then you're serving him, and because of that you just think, oh, he's an ordinary man, and then you become critical of him. We saw this happen even in the case of Śrīla Prabhupāda. Many times, sometimes, sometimes Prabhupāda would have servants who would be serving him all the time. Then after some time, they would begin to think of Prabhupāda as an ordinary man, and gradually they all fell in māyā. So one has to be very careful in Vaiṣṇava dealings so that we doesn't become so familiar even with another devotee to become disrespectful to the devotee.
He says that, yes, he just said that Kṛṣṇa is equal to everyone. He gives His mercy to everyone and equal, like a son. Yes. Today we see that only His devotees get him as a servant, like, like that. Okay, I understand.
There is no contradiction between what was said yesterday and what was said today. Krishna is equal to everyone, but still he's more, he's more dependent, he's more protective of those who are completely surrendered to him. Just like a father may be equal to all his children, but still the father is more disposed towards the youngest child because the youngest child is more dependent upon the father.
Experience constant enthusiasm. So how can we achieve that enthusiasm?
How to achieve constant enthusiasm may appear difficult, but actually it is not difficult. There's a very good chance that if you chant your rounds every morning attentively, follow, have a good sadhana, read 1 hour a day, then you'll at least, you'll always be enthusiastic. Be engaged all the time in service, in serving Kṛṣṇa. An idle brain is the devil's workshop. And if you're busy serving all the time, then enthusiasm will develop. Lack of enthusiasm is due to identification with the body and the mind. Instead of listening to Kṛṣṇa and His pure devotees, we begin to listen to the mind, and then you lose your enthusiasm. So you must recognize your mind is your enemy number one. When your mind becomes controlled, then it will become your friend. Right now it's your enemy. Yes, yes. Binalila.
How can the unconscious, not really conscious, devotional service purify? To what extent can a devotee think that simply by serving Kṛṣṇa he will return back to Him without studying much philosophy like that?
Without studying much philosophy? Of course we want people Of course, we— Prabhupada wanted everybody to study the philosophy. That's why he wrote these books. Prabhupada often used to say that if you go out to distribute these books and somebody will ask you what's inside these books and you say, I don't know, it won't make— it won't look good. As you read and serve, your faith and determination will become stronger. So we should all endeavor to read and serve and that will make our faith stronger. However, devotional service is so powerful. Agyāna-sukruti. Agyāna-sukruti. Agyāna-sukruti. Agyāna-sukruti means when you serve knowing that you will get some benefit in exchange for this service. Agyāna-sukruti means that you serve even without knowing that you'll get the benefit, but because you've done that service, you'll get the benefit. Just like when you go on book distribution, Many people who buy these books, they don't know that by buying these books they're going to get spiritual benefit. Some may buy these books because they want to learn philosophy or whatever the reason may be, but anybody who takes these books, he's actually rendering devotional service, aghyātā-sukruti.
What is your attitude towards different religions and mundane sciences?
Well, our attitude towards different religions, our attitude towards everybody should be to always speak the truth. We should tell them what is the real meaning of religion. A devotee is never scared of speaking the truth, though he speaks it in a palatable manner. And towards scientists, we should also tell them, if you are a scientist, then prove that God exists. And prove that nothing exists without God.
As it is said, our hands, our legs move only because they are controlling demigods who are performing those activities. On the other hand, it is said that Lord is named Rishikesh, which also means that he is the master of our senses. So what is the way that the demigods control our activities of our senses, and what is the way that the Lord does?
Everything the demigods do is under the direction of the Supreme Lord. So ultimately everything is controlled by Kṛṣṇa. The devotee is directly under the control of the Lord. So there's no contradiction.
It's not about contradiction, but in which way I am under control.
In which way?
Yeah, in which way is that control in Kāla-samhāsa?
Through the demigods?
Demigods and Lord.
The demigods give you the ability, just like the sun gives you sunshine. The moonshine, the air, they give you all the facilities as a result of which you can move, act, think. Yes. Maybe the sāṅkītaṇḍavodīs can go to get the prasāda ready or something. There are a lot of questions, so a lot of visiting. Since a lot of visiting devotees here also, maybe the Moscow devotees. So I don't want to upset their schedule. They can, the sāṅkītaṇḍavodīs can. Go for prashad if they have to, because I'll take on some more questions.
Yeah, prasadam is taken here.
Prashad's taken here. Okay, okay, I'm going to finish in 2 minutes. Yes, yes, yes.
As it was said that Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu's birth, that he wants, he wants devotional service birth after birth. So how should we understand this birth after birth since in the process of devotional service we are supposed to achieve liberation? So how it happens that the devotee still remains to serve birth after birth?
Well, the point is this, that even though liberation is guaranteed, the devotee is not counting on being liberated. So he is ready to take millions of births as long as he can engage in service to Kṛṣṇa.
He wants to specify, does that mean that if the devotee is taking his birth again, does it mean that he will start from some zero point, or will he just go on with his service continuously?
Oh, he will go on with his service. He is not going to start at zero point. If he starts at zero point, that means devotional service has been wasted.
If one has knowledge and renunciation but does not engage himself in devotional service, Can he achieve love of God?
You can't have renunciation if you don't develop love of God. Impossible. Just like in India, you may meet a lot of people who have lot of Sanskrit knowledge, who know the whole Bhagavad-gītā by heart, but they have no renunciation. They will even smoke, drink chai, and do so many nonsense things. So you can't have, you can't have renunciation unless you have, you engage in service to God. Okay. Yes, Alexander.
Prasad Raaval. Prasad Raaval. Yesterday it was mentioned how Kṛṣṇa killed Putana, and it is stated in this context that gopīs were very happy about this, and they were thinking that they perhaps were performing some very pious activities in their previous lives, and as a result of these activities Kṛṣṇa was able to kill Putana. On the other hand, it is said that the devotee is always humble. He doesn't think himself to be the cause of anything that happens. So what was the situation or the state of consciousness of Gopis that they were thinking in this way? Because they are supposed to be—
They were thinking what?
They were considering themselves like the cause of Krishna's being able to kill Putana. That's what she said. That they were thinking that Kṛṣṇa was able to kill Putana because of their performance and very pious activities previously. And since gopīs are supposed to be the most advanced devotees, that means the most humble devotees, how should we understand their mentality? Why did they think like this?
Actually, when Kṛṣṇa killed, Kṛṣṇa killed the demon Putana, all his parents, The gopīs, everyone present, they thought actually it was the will of the Providence that Putana was saved and he performed this heroic act. And the gopīs and the, and Kṛṣṇa's parents, actually they all had tremendous affection for Kṛṣṇa. Now whenever these demons were killed, Kṛṣṇa's relatives, of course, were always happy. In fact, they were always scared that Kṛṣṇa may get killed by one of the various demons that was appearing over there from time to time. And the gopīs' feeling that their devotion was saving Kṛṣṇa was more a feeling of affection rather than pride. So it was more out of affection. Just like after Putana was killed, Kṛṣṇa's mother chanted the Viṣṇu names for Kṛṣṇa's protection. That was again out of affection. I don't know how long to go on because I know they have prasādam in this room. And there are many. What should I do? I'm going to finish in 2 minutes because devotees have to eat prasad in this room. You can keep your questions for this evening. I'll definitely give the Bhagavad-gītā class starting at about 7:20, but if I'm free, I'll also give a class at 6 o'clock. I'm not 100% sure because I have to give a Bhaktirādhārī Institute lecture this evening at 5 o'clock, so I don't know if that will finish by 6. You need to come to your program. Okay, quickly, yeah.
Why did it happen 5,000 years ago and even now that birth, death also appeared to be exist like that?
Well, birth and death was exist because everybody who takes birth has to actually eventually leave. Even in Satya Yuga there was death, but in that Satya Yuga people were dying on their own free will. And Kṛṣṇa, by killing these demons, He becomes even more glorious. Kṛṣṇa, when He appeared, He performed superhuman activities which can never be equaled by anyone ever. There's so many people today all over the world who claim they are God. So let them perform pastimes like Kṛṣṇa did.
Listening, he got an impression that it's not possible to, so to speak, to understand all the material existence. It's like too vast and it's not possible. Maybe it's not enough, we won't have enough skills to understand Bhagavad-gītā. But he says, if we cultivate our intelligence, do we need rituals for that?
Of course you're not a newcomer. That's my first point. I've been seeing you for years and years, so you're, you're an old comer. So all you have to do is just chant Tolka Pastra Hare Krishna. That's all. You just keep coming to the programs like you do and you will benefit. Don't worry. How many years have you been coming for? I've been singing for 2, 3 years. Kalehale! Halelulah! Lama lama halehale!
Hare Krishna hare Krishna!
