Pastimes of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu | Rus-Split | 2017 | Srila Gopal Krishna Goswami

The video is a devotional lecture by Srila Gopal Krishna Goswami, interspersed with audience questions, that explores the teachings and pastimes of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The speaker explains the three progressive stages of chanting the Hare Krishna maha‑mantra—offensive, minimizing offenses, and purified—emphasizing that attentive, heart‑purifying chanting leads to unending spiritual happiness. He uses vivid analogies from the Śrīmad‑Bhāgavatam (moth, bee, deer, fish, elephant) to illustrate how attachment to the senses can trap a being, urging devotees to guard their senses and avoid "unwanted weeds" on the spiritual path. The lecture also covers the guru‑disciple relationship, stressing that a guru must teach by example and that disciples should accept instructions with reverence. Community themes such as unity, avoiding "Vaishnava prasāda" (negative influences), and the importance of looking for goodness in all are highlighted, together with a critique of modern Buddhist practices that neglect true non‑violence. Numerous anecdotes about historical devotees (Kola Vidyā, Kalamajit, Prasad Raval, etc.) illustrate humility, devotion, and the power of the Holy Name. The Q&A segment addresses practical concerns: the ever‑present nature of Krishna in the mantra, elements of proper chanting, handling pride‑induced "weeds," the role of the guru, the limited benefit of chanting other mantras, and the speaker’s personal motivation to preach despite health challenges. The overall message is that sincere, disciplined chanting, association with devotees, and adherence to guru guidance lead to heart purification, spiritual advancement, and ultimate, limitless happiness.
Questions this video answers
He's always present.
Proper chanting in English and Hindi should be done with concentration on hearing and chanting, without distraction, just as one would not want to be disturbed while eating prasāda.
Take the help of advanced Vajrayana to overcome the cause of the unwanted means; remember the Swami's teaching that evil in the mind is the root.
A guru is a transcendental guide who gives pure instruction and teaches by personal example. The disciple should accept the guru's instructions with faith and reverence, following them to develop attachment to the guru.
You get some benefit, but not the full benefit of returning to Godhead; you can choose the speed of material existence (express train vs. goods train).
Chapters
Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Everyone is blissful. Why are you blissful? We are blissful because we are chanting the Holy Name. Ananda bodhi. Ananda bodhi. What are the gains of chanting the Holy Name? That it leads to more pleasure. So yesterday we discussed the importance of deity worship, and this morning we discussed Lord Mahārāja's instructions. Who remembers what the Lord Mahārāja said? He said, "Satisfy the Lord," and he said, "The Lord is inconceivable." And he said one more thing. Who remembers? "Show mercy to all living and dead." Om.
Om.
Om. So I thought today we would discuss Chaitanya Mahāprabhu's pastime instructions. Is that okay?
Okay.
In the morning we discussed Pradhanādaya's teachings. Today we spoke about his son, Khorindra Prabhu, and the animals, the other deities. The Chaitanya Mahāprabhu is in love. And none of us for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in His śrī-saṣṭra, in His śrī-saṣṭra prayers, He has summarized entirely the emancipation. In the very first verse He says, ceda darpana mārjana. One of the gains of chanting Your Holy Name is it cleanses our heart. Our hearts are heavily contaminated. True or false? Universally true. They are contaminated with what? Anātmas, lust, anger, greed, envy, hatred. Just like if you have a disease called cataract in the eyes, you can't see properly. It's a disease, anātma. We can't really gain inspiration to serve the Lord. By chanting the Holy Name, the heart begins to get cleansed. We all have experience of this. Before we came to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we had so many material attractions. It's not that these attractions are not there anymore, but I had that experience also. And we chant, you know, that gets intense. And we find that on the days when we do chant properly, our spiritual enthusiasm will high. And the days when we don't chant properly, our enthusiasm will low. Is that true? Is that your experience? Therefore the scriptures recommend not only chanting but attentive chanting. They are broadly Three stages of chanting Kṛṣṇa: the offensive stage, the stage of minimizing offenses, and the purified stage. In the initial stages, we chant. We may follow some rules or not. We're not even aware of the rules, but we chant. We all probably went through that stage. We were chanting without being aware of the offenses and the guru and so on. But then as you come in contact with devotees, begin to associate with devotees, begin to chant, begin to read the books, you become aware of the offenses, etc. And then we endeavor to avoid the offenses, and then we get to the purified stage. Which should be our ultimate goal. This chanting definitely cleanses the heart and also gives you ananda-buddhi-vāsanam, unending spiritual happiness. Sometimes people feel, "If I go to spiritual life, I'll become miserable." Why? "I won't be able to drink, I won't be able to do this, I won't be able to do that." Because what's the use of living? They don't understand there is a higher level of happiness. Just like Krishna explains in the Bhagavad Gītā, there are three stages of happiness: happiness in goodness, happiness in passion, happiness in ignorance. Happiness in goodness is bitter in the beginning, sweet in the end, and it makes you optimal. Self-realization. Just like when you first come to spiritual life, you get exposed to the guidelines. It's a little bitter in the beginning, but then as you practice it, the bitterness becomes sweet. When you have surgery, in the beginning it's painful. Yeah, there's no such thing as painless surgery, but then as you recover from the disease, that pain becomes a source of pleasure. And happiness and passion. Sweet in the beginning, bitter in the end, which is derived from contact with the senses and sense objects. My God! Society is engrossed in passion and ignorance. This is okay too. You read the instructions of Lord Rāṣṭra Deva to his 100 sons. The word rāṣṭra in Sanskrit means the best. You are the incarnation of God. His father was King Narvi, mother was Bindudevī. They were once performing a yajña with the intention of having a son like God. The Lord was so pleased, He said, "You can't have a son like Me. I'll become your son." So Lord Rāṣadeva says in that famous verse, nāyām te ādaya bhājami lokaḥ, "Do not lead this life like the animals." Now what do you do with the human life? What did Rādhārāṇī Śrīla Prabhupāda say? What do you do with it? Use it for tapo divyam putraka jnāna-sattva. Perform austerities for the pleasure of the Lord. Then you may ask, "What am I going to get in exchange for all this austerity?" You get anything in exchange? No. What do you get in exchange? Yes. From the Soka Gakkai-nanda. Unending spiritual happiness. Unending. Prabhupāda explained that there is a limit to the height of the waves of the regular ocean, but there is no limit to the height of the spiritual ocean. There should be no doubt that we perform austerities for the pleasure of the Lord in exchange of being Real happiness. Why do the doubts come in our mind? Doubts come in your mind sometimes. If they don't come, then you don't have to worry. Why do doubts come in our mind? Because we listen to our pickle mind. When the mind becomes your guru, that's when doubts come. When the mind is your guru, you do everything what the mind says. And he starts believing the mind more than the Lord and His devotees. And then the doubts increase. So the doubts should be corrected. Arjuna had so many doubts, he went to the right source. Kṛṣṇa says, "For the doubting soul there's no happiness." now or later. And it's another thing to leave the impure mind, which is related to the purified mind. What are the uncertainties of the mind? What are the uncertainties of the tongue? What are the uncertainties of the body? Kṛṣṇa discusses this in the Bhāgavad-gītā. What is the uncertainty of the body? To use the different senses in a positive way, We have these knowledge according senses. Can then use them correctly. In the Bhāgavatā, you get examples of different animals, of the media and— Take for example the moth. The moth is very attracted to light. And so, when the night, when the lights come on, the moth is impressed. Let me go and catch the light and go near the light. It gets burnt by the heat of the light. You may have seen this in Mayapur in the morning, so many moths. So the moth is trying to satisfy its eyes and it gets trapped in that. Then you have the bee that likes to attract. It would be— I could smell something, and it goes and sits on the lotus flower. But enjoying the fragrance of lotus so much, and eventually goes into samadhi. But then in the evening, lotus flower closes. And when the lotus flower closes, what happened to the bee? What happens? It gets trapped to death. And generally that's why it smells. It's trapped. Then you have the deer, who's very attracted to a particular melody. Deer has very big ears. We have a temple in Washington, and you see deer everywhere. Sometimes they show up in our backyard also. Maybe the deer is living in the jungle. And sometimes they come on the road. So when the hunter wants to capture a deer, what does he do? What does he do? He has a different melody. The deer stops to run. Usually it runs very fast. Here is the melody, and try to trade with the melody. And what happens? The hunter shoots the deer. And trying to satisfy its ear, it gets trapped. Then he has a fish. What does the fish attract it to? Eating. What does the cunning fisherman do? Put the food on the bait, and the bee goes for it. The fish goes to eat it. He gets trapped with that. And then, what example is left? Elephant. And then the elephant gets trapped. Very easy to trap an elephant. The sea elephant is specially trained., and they dig a ditch covered by grass, and they see elephant, tease the elephant, who walks and then falls in the ditch. So these examples that we gave are all from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. And the Bhāgavatam gives these examples to show how these animals by becoming slaves of one of their senses gets captured to death. And the problem with the human eye, man, All the senses are competing. I want to satisfy my eyes, see something obscene, hear something mundane, eat without discrimination, satisfy my nose, satisfy my genitals. So therefore it is said, the austerity of the body is: use it in service of the Lord. Practice cleanliness. Practice non-violence. Devotee believes in true non-violence. These days Buddhism has become quite fashionable.
Not sure, really.
In many parts of the world. Why did I say fashionable? People want to be Buddhists, but they don't understand Buddha's teachings. Buddha preached non-violence. When he saw the violence in society, Buddha was greatly pained. But the modern Buddhists, they eat everything. Where the devotee is truly nonviolent, the modern Buddhist not only eat everything, drink everything also. I go to Burma, which is a Buddhist country, and in every corner there's a Buddhist temple. You see 4-year-old monks walking on the road and going to hotels and begging. You walk on the streets, you see so many Buddhist monks, and it's like a tradition to shave off a child, completely shaven up like Hare Krishna. Only thing they don't have is the seeker, and they almost wear dress with clothes and stuff. Even in buses, they have seats reserved for monks, but unfortunately they eat everything. Right opposite that temple is a Buddhist temple in one of the cities. When they have their feasts, they cook meat and all that. It comes right into our temple. So Buddha preached non-violence. He renounced his whole kingdom for the present of Buddhists. As I said, don't fear anything. Where a devotee is totally non-violent. The classic example you read in the Fifth Canto, Jatmāhāra, who had been previously King Mahārāja. How did Jatmāhāra look so cautious? He was carrying the palanquin of King Rādhumana, but unlike the other palanquin carriers, he was very cautious in placing his feet. The palanquin king who was the carrier would charge at other kings, grauṇa. 'Why are you moving so slowly now? I want you to move fast.' He was going to hear spiritual discourse, but because he was a king, he had his own passion, and the king wanted them to obey him. So Jeth Bharat was so cautious that he would not place his feet on the ground till he saw at least for the next few feet there were no entities on the floor.
Floor.
So the king chastised Jadvāra, "Don't you know who you're carrying?" In the bathing days, the monarch would be carried in a palanquin and the rest would walk. The king would be carried in a palanquin. Initially, Jadvāra didn't say anything. Then when he spoke, the king realized "This man is not stepping down." For he's a great sage. He got down from his palanquin, fell at the feet of Jadvāra and apologized for having chastised. He said, "I'm not scared of Indra's thunderbolt, but I'm scared of offending of Vaiṣṇava." So on the devotional path, we have to be careful about Vaiṣṇava's wrath. Caitanya Mahāprabhu explains, Ramānda, Rāmīda, Kūlambā, Gauṇadī, Guru Kṛṣṇa, Kripāvai, Bhakti Vāṭavi. As you are going through many births and deaths, you need the fortune of soul who receives the seed of bhakti. Seed of bhakti, what does that mean? The knowledge that Lord is Supreme and the way to please the Lord is to chant His holy name. Just like in the words we did this morning, Lord Mahārāja was saying, "Satisfy the Lord. That should be our goal." You satisfy the Lord, and He satisfies. Chidānmām vṛkṣṇaḥ. Have you received this bhakti, that bhakti, knowledge that go to the surface of this ocean? You water the seed by chanting and hearing. Taboo.
—go hara-lakṛṣṇa.
We do it by chanting and hearing. It's our experience. As we share, we progress spiritually. But then Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, "Build a strong fencing, but keep yourself in devotee association." Just like I see many of the buildings in this area, a very high boundary wall. And we have a boundary wall. Why do we have a boundary wall? We don't want unwanted elements to come in. In some parts of the world, there are boundary walls, and above the boundary walls, there are electric wires. If anybody touches anything, they get a shock. Especially those who have a lot of wealth, they have to take all these precautions. But then Lord Caitanya says, "There may be unwanted weeds that also grow." Chanting sometimes makes you proud. "I'm initiated, I'm Brahmana, I'm this, I'm that." What is it? What should we do with the unwanted weeds? What do we do? Some grow. What do you do? Uproot them. It's like if you have a dangerous car appearing in your garden. Or an infectious infection entering your body. So what do you do? Get the infection removed right away. This unwanted weed should be pulled out. But then Lord Caitanya proceeded to explain how a beautiful garden can get spoiled if a man-elephant is allowed to come in. And that is referred to as the man elephant of mass. Vaiṣṇava prasāda. So we should be very careful on the devotional path to avoid vaiṣṇava prasāda. Just criticize vaiṣṇavas. We should avoid that. We should avoid vaiṣṇava prasāda. That can be done by being cautious and careful. Prabhupāda encouraged us to look at the good in everyone. He created this very wonderful ISKCON society and He gave us all the opportunity to serve. When Prabhupāda was young, the astrologer did his horoscope. The astrologer said, "This man will one day make a house in which the whole world will be able to live." So one builds a house. Means that people of all backgrounds can develop. All backgrounds, all nationalities. You don't have to be rich or poor. So Prabhupāda wanted us to work in unity. Prabhupāda said— Prabhupāda used to often quote this: United we stand, divided we fall. You've heard that before, yeah? United we stand, divided we fall. What does it mean? What does it mean? If you work together, you can become very strong. And if you divide it, you keep fighting. Prabhupāda give an example of a blade of grass. A blade of grass by itself has almost no strength. You pull it, When a child gonna break it. But if the blade of grass is blended with other blades of grass, then it becomes stronger than a rope. So Prabhupāda wanted us to look at the good in everyone. Never encourage cooperation. Prabhupāda wanted us in Vaishnava community Look at the good in everyone. That will enable us to be respectful to everyone. But unfortunately, our taste is more into weaknesses. You hear that scandal about that person? The more positive approach is look at the goodness in everyone and encourage everyone. And avoid fault-finding. Avoid prajālpa. You know, the base for prajālpa is kṛṣṇa-katha. That can tell Part 1. Praśad RAVAL spoke as follows. He said, "Since I have been hearing the nectar of Lord's pastime from Śrī Kṛṣṇa with Swāmi, my hunger and thirst is no longer an impediment to me." Praśad RAVAL, as you know, was going to die in 7 days. So he prepared for his departure. In a very glorious way, he invited all the great sages and said, "What should a person do who is about to die?" So different sages gave different replies, but he said only twice, "When my sugar level is falling." So he was taking so much nectar hearing the passion of the Lord. That is, hunger and thirst that would have normally bothered a good person did not bother him at all. Prabhupāda in the purport of this verse says, "We are all suffering from spiritual hunger." There is material hunger and spiritual hunger. Material hunger, you want to eat prasāda. The world is suffering with the lack of God consciousness. Bhākisiddhānta Mahāprabhu used to say, "This is a shortage of anything. It's just this one community, love of God." So Caitanya Mahāprabhu guides us on the devotional path, "Be careful to avoid Vaishnava prasāda." And He gave an example. Caitanya Mahāprabhu was described as the most merciful of all incarnations. He liberated people of all walks of life. He wounded thousands of impersonals, the path of personalism. He wounded thousands of Buddhists, the path of rationalism. Once Lord Caitanya had defeated the Buddhist leader in a discussion. So the Buddhists wanted to take revenge. "They defeated our leader, our guru!" So they took some contaminated food and a certain place And they were having a purīśvara, he has a Mahāprasād for you. And as they were offering the plate, an eagle came from the top, took the contaminated food, and dropped the plate on the head of their Guru. And the poor Guru, you know, had a metal plate, fell on the head. He fainted, fainted. And the brothers were feeling very apologetic. "Oh, because of our bad intentions, now our Guru has got punished." So they revealed their intentions to Gaura Nisargadatta Mahāprabhu. "Go and whisper the holy name near Guru's ear." And they did that. And then Guru came to consciousness. And then they all When the Lord came to Vārnāsi, in the mood He said, "There is too much criticism going on for You. We can't tolerate it." Tapaṁ asaṁ caṇḍaṣeka. Two devotees, devānāmṛśyenduḥ kāraḥ, devotees, devotees of the Lord. Please come and debate with these impersonals. The Lord is always obliged to His devotees. So the Lord went to the assembly. The Māyāvādī sannyāsīs were on a higher platform. And the Lord went and sat down. And they washed His feet before going into the temple. God, when He appears, He performs superhuman activities. These days you have so many incarnations, And I ask them to do something superhuman, they will fail the test. Once there was a so-called Swami who told me, "Why do you people believe that only Kṛṣṇa is Supreme? Why we can't all be Kṛṣṇas?" I said, "Kṛṣṇa came. He performed superhuman activities which no one can equal or has equaled so far." "Just because they have been done today." Doesn't mean they can't do it tomorrow. But when the real God comes, He performs superhuman activity. As I told you, Jitānya, on several occasions He revealed superhuman activity. When the Lord was a young boy, not in Himāyā, when a brāhman came to stay in their house, Jagannātha Mādhava Sir was very hospitable. So when the brāhman would cook his food, you know, for him. The lion would come and eat it and contaminate it. It's happened 3 times. Yogananda just said, "Don't worry, I am going to hide my son in the distance. Please cook again." It was almost midnight. He was always a prasād rādhī. Nimai again came there and he said, Brahman said, "Oh, you've come again. Your father assured me you would not be coming." Nimai said, "Who are you offering this to?" "To me." And he said, "Wishnu, Wishnu, Wishnu, prasād rāval." And then Nimai showed his shānsaṇḍapā. So when God comes, He does something superhuman. We don't accept these so-called modern-day Kali-Yuga gods. There are plenty of mystics in your country also. We have plenty of Bhagavans in India. If you have Bhagavan, my saptāntira will follow. So then Chitrabhadra Mahāprabhu sat down where they wash their feet before going into the temple. See how humble he was. The leader of the Māyāvādīs, Prakāśinanda Sarasvatī, came and took his hand and took him up on the stage. Before he went on the stage, he revealed the opulence of millions of moons put together. These sannyāsis can see. This sannyāsi is not ordinary. So much opulence coming from him.
Prasad Raaval.
And then in the dialogue, Acharya Dada can convince them. The Holy Name is the medium. And all the Vaiṣṇavādīs became Vaiṣṇavādīs. And then they went in a big hurry now. I usually go for a walk and today we were walking in— what is it called? Right next to a very ancient beer factory. But the good thing was We had so many devotees, you know, wishing Hare Krishna to everyone. It was amazing, almost everyone responded, "Hare Rama." And there was a truck overtaking us, and we were walking, and people in the truck chanted, "Om Mani Padme Hum." They saw us in the channel. If you go to East Africa, I haven't been to West Africa, but in East Africa, Everyone who would see this would say, "Hare Kṛṣṇa!" The Lord Caitanya in a proper line, the chanting of the holy name had predicted. The chanting of the holy name would go every tongue in the language of the world. Lord Caitanya, a devotee called Kodama Jīṣṛda. Kodama Jīṣṛda was materially very poor, not rich like all of you. He had one room to live with no roof. He had one dhoti with 11 holes. And he had only one pot in his house, and that pot was so broken that Caitanya Mahāprabhu would say, "Even a thief would not have touched it." Means it was so bad, even a thief won't even steal it. And what business was Kula Vaitheśvara doing? Banana leaf cups. And he would sell bananas. Lord Chaitanya would go every day to his shop. "Ko apa soye banana se bhosle?" "What's the price of bananas in this shop?" And he would go for the price. 10 rupees per, 10 kopeks per dozen, whatever the price was. And Lord would say, "No, no, that's too expensive. You are making too much profit. One day I will show to the world "how much profit you are making?" And Kula Vidyāśrīla would say, "Come and see my house to see yourself how much money I have." And from his small, tiny income, he would give how much money for worshiping the Ganges. So Lord Caitanya once led a marathon harināma to the Jhāngādhī's house. He just killed them nonstop. For 8-9 hours nonstop. But then he felt thirsty. He was very thirsty. He needed to drink water. He went to Kola Vidyāśrīdāra's house, took that broken pot with which Kola Vidyāśrīdāra would drink water, drink dal, eat chapati. So the Lord took that pot, put water inside, and started drinking it. Śrīla Avadhūtā, she does that. "My dear Lord, what are You doing? You are drinking from contaminated clay cup." The Lord said, "I am getting purified." The Lord is recognizing great devotion. It showed to the world what a great devotee Kula Vidyā Śrīla is. The Lord is drinking water from a contaminated, from his pot. So Kalamajit Śrīla would once offer, any benediction the Lord made, he would get that. Kalamajit Śrīla would very loudly chant, "Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa," day and night. The neighbors would say, "This man is ghostly haunted. Doesn't eat anything. He doesn't sleep and he doesn't let us sleep." When God Caitanya sent His devotee, Venkatavajra Śrīla, Lord said, "Finding him will be very easy. You go and stand on the road. You will hear loud chanting from one direction. If you want to give him benediction, give me the benediction. Then every birth you will come to my shop and bargain with me." He lived a very simple life. Just attached to the Holy Name. So I endeavor to be— to get attached to the Holy Name. The Holy Name is not Indian or Western or American or Russian. The Holy Name is coming from the spiritual world, and the Holy Name is non-different from the Lord. So we are here in Kṛṣṇa consciousness to make spiritual advancement. That may be brahmacharis, Some may be Kriyasas, some may be Manavasas, and some may be Sannyasas. But our goal is common. We get attached to the Holy Name. We take advantage of this process. There's no secret in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Sometimes, you know, gurus give you secret mantras. We have no secret mantra. We have no secret at all in ISKCON. Anything happening in ISKCON, anybody can go into any part of the world. GBC meetings, and I will all go along with what we discuss. So this sharing the Holy Name is not secretive. Share the Holy Name, stay in devotee service, don't let the mind be your guru, and then you'll succeed spiritually. Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna. Any questions? Namahāśakti. Can I ask two questions?
Okay, ask quickly. Is Kṛṣṇa always present in His Holy Name, or if we chant offensively, Kṛṣṇa is not present there?
He's always present.
Okay. Could you mention the elements of proper chanting?
Proper chanting? In English and in Hindi, I think, you know, Try to concentrate in hearing and chanting. Just like when you're eating prasāda, would you like, would you like being distracted? Eating prasāda, someone comes and disturbs you every minute. Do you like it? So when you're chanting the Holy Name, try to chant without disturbance. Okay. Yeah. As Bhagavatam, Jalavartha was in stage of Balabharti. So as Krishna, as Krishna said, from the stage of Bharti, no one is falling. So how Jalavartha, Prima Bharti and Balabharti, similar. It's like Baba is something like Prabhupāda. So from Prabhupāda, no one is falling down. So from that stage, how? You know, people do fall down. People do fall down. He didn't fall down. He was King Bharata, but in his previous life He got attracted to a deer. He had to take his birth as a deer. But he didn't have to stay for long in that. He soon took his birth as a Brahmin. He was born as Gopalpara.
Sometimes when we do some service, we see how some unwanted weeds are growing. And for example, we do some certain service We become proud of that. So then we think maybe we should give up this service. How to properly act when we get that some unwanted weeds are developed because of our service?
Take the help of advanced Vajrayana to help you overcome the cause of the unwanted means. Remember, Swami said, "Evil in your mind, those are more involved.
Don't hesitate, don't doubt, evil in your mind." Sometimes our mind becomes our guru. So, could you explain what is the rule of the guru, the role of the guru in disciple's life, and how the disciple can enhance his relationship with the guru?
Okay. The guru is essentially a transcendental force man. He's not a magician or a superhuman being. Sometimes people have a very utopian concept of a guru. Oh, he should be like a movie star, or sweetest singer of the world. The guru basically Just gives you the pure message. When you preach by example— there was once a mother whose son had very, very high diabetes. So the mother would tell the son, 'Stop eating sweets, you're going to die.' But the son would not stop eating sweets. So she finally took the son to the guru. "Guruji, can you please tell my son to stop eating sweets? He has very high diabetes." The Guru said, "Come back in 2 weeks, I'll tell him." So after 2 weeks, the mother took the son again to the Guru, and the Guru told the son, "Son, don't eat sweets. It's bad for your health. You'll die." And then the son said, "Okay, Guruji, I won't eat sweets anymore, I promise." So the mother was shocked. She said, I'm saying day and night, and he doesn't listen. So she asked the guru, why didn't you— what are you believing? He told him the same thing 2 weeks ago. And the guru said, 2 weeks ago I was eating sweets. How could I tell him to stop eating sweets? Now I've stopped eating sweets, I can tell him to stop eating sweets. So the guru has to preach by example. He can't tell you control your mind and senses And he does the opposite. And the guru gives the instructions, and they're coming down, so, paṁboḥ. So basically what a guru does, they give you the instructions and the method, path, and teaches by example. I want to stop at this point. What is the disciple's duty? To accept these instructions with faith and reverence. By following instructions, one gets attached to the guru. Just like how do you get attached to the Holy Name? By chanting. How do you get attached to reading? By reading. So you get attached by following the instructions. Is that your question? Okay.
The method for the Kali Yuga is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra. What will be the result of chanting some other mantras, some other holy name? What will be the result of chanting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya?
You get some benefit, not full benefit. You won't go back to Godhead. You can decide how many more births you want in material world. Do you want to go with the express train or the goods train? Choice is ours. We can take the super fast train or the slow train. Okay. Fast train. Yes. You get some benefit, not full benefit. You won't go back to Godhead. You can decide. How many more births you want him to do? Fast train or the good train? Choice is ours. We can take him on the fast train or the slow train. Any other question? Any other question?
Yes. Please tell us what force pushes you to preach so much, even after 40 years, to travel in such a heavy schedule. We know that you had few surgeries on your heart and still you continue to preach so forcefully. What, what is the source of the strength?
Kṛṣṇa prayed in the way of heart surgery, for any surgery. I don't know who told you that. But also, some other health problems which everybody has when travels. Anyway, the answer is simple. Prabhupāda preached to me and I was like, if they hated working so much, A lot of help. We have a mission ahead of us, and we can try our best to do that. I want to stop at this point. Thank you very much. Tomorrow we have to withdraw ourselves for the work on our farm for 1 hour.
And then thank you.
So this morning, evening, some devotees that come for Darshan. I'll give Darshan to everyone.
