In this devotional lecture, Śrīla Gopāl Kṛṣṇa Goswāmī Maharaja presents the Bhagavad‑gītā as the oldest and supreme source of spiritual education. He traces its divine origin—from the Sun‑God Vivasva to Krishna’s discourse to Arjuna—emphasizing that the Gītā must be received from a friend and devotee of the Lord. The talk contrasts material and spiritual knowledge, declaring the Gītā the "king of education" that teaches the laws of God, the nature of the eternal soul, the impermanence of the body, and the inexorable flow of time. Using analogies such as the lotus leaf, he illustrates detachment while living in the world. He urges surrender to Krishna as the path to lasting happiness, and recommends reading the Gītā daily, citing personal testimonies and the global, non‑sectarian spread of its teachings through Bhaktivedanta Swami’s initiatives. The lecture concludes with an enthusiastic call to share the Gītā for universal peace and wisdom.
Chapters
Hare Kṛṣṇa. Bhagavad-gītā is the oldest book of knowledge on the planet. First, this knowledge was spoken by the Lord, the Sun God, Vivasva. Then the Lord retold this knowledge to Arjuna. Arjuna was the Lord's friend and devotee. This means If you want to understand the Bhagavad-gītā, you should receive it from a friend and devotee of the Lord. What does the Bhagavad-gītā contain? Real education. Kṛṣṇa says in the 9th chapter, rāja-vidyā rāja-vidyam, this knowledge is the king of education. In society today, we have material knowledge and spiritual knowledge. Spiritual knowledge teaches you how to satisfy your senses. Spiritual knowledge teaches you to follow the laws of God. That's like in any garment. If you follow the laws, you can roam around freely. Otherwise, you get imprisoned. Similarly, if you follow spiritual laws, you lead a happy life. Bhāgavad-gītā teaches, "Who is God?" "Hī Bhāvānavaśah." The Supreme Lord is speaking. And it establishes Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Lord. Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Lord, all this knowledge for our benefit, benefit of the people of society all over the world. If Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Lord, He's giving us eternal wisdom. Then Bhagavad-gītā teaches us, who are we? In any country, you must have identity. If you go to a country abroad, you always have to show your passport. So we should know who we are. In ignorance we identify with the body, but in knowledge, what does Kṛṣṇa say? But the soul is never born nor death. Not having one's left eye, he should be. Soul is eternal. One ten thousandth of the tip of the hair. And as long as the soul is there, you have consciousness. Even the Bible says, "What shall I do if I have gained the whole world except for the loss of eternal soul?" So we should know His body is perishable, his soul is eternal and transmigrates from one body to another body. The science of the soul is very important for humanity. Bhagavad Gita teaches us the importance of time. Time, I am the destroyer of everything. Time is the agent of the Lord. You have a beautiful, handsome body today. Will we remain handsome tomorrow? No. With passage of time, the body deteriorates, the senses get weak, and diseases increase. Krishna says, "Two things can't be avoided: 'ukālayam,' which means miseries, and 'śarjata,' which means everything is temporary." The time should not be wasted. Time should be used to serve the Lord. So Bhagavad-gītā teaches us these important topics. Now if you read the Bhagavad-gītā, you will develop detachment. Kṛṣṇa gives a nice example. Lotus leaf is in water, but it's not touched by the water. So we have to live in the material world. We should live and detachment. If you want peace, please read the Bhagavad Gita. And in the 18th chapter, Krishna says, "Please surrender to me." We have to surrender to someone. If we don't surrender to the Lord, then God is surrendered to us himself. But if we serve the Lord, we'll be happy. Krishna says, "Om mudha prasannatma." Who is constantly situated is always happy. Read the Bhagavad Gita. People will say, "Oh, I'm so busy." So busy, you have no idea. You are busy, but there is a will, there is a way. To find time, read one word minimum, that poor boy. I know thousands of people who read the Gita every day. And what is the result? They live a life of peace. They live a life of happiness. And they regain inner happiness following the Lord's teaching. So please read the Bhagavad Gita. Tell your friends to read it. This is not a sectarian document. This is a document for the entire world. Bhaktivedanta Swami took the message of Gita every corner of the globe. And today you have thousands of schools and colleges all over the world studying the Bhagavad-gītā. The Bhagavad-gītā is flawless and it contains eternal wisdom. Try reading the Bhagavad-gītā every day. At the end of one day you will say, "Oh, I've become so wise. This is real knowledge." Please endeavor to read. You'll find you'll have that. Thank you very much. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
