Nelson was a forester who understood long-term growth, then became a life insurance agent. He called bankers "snakes and dragons" and used whole life insurance policies to avoid them, applying his tree-growing mindset to building capital.

Nelson was a forester, so he understood how to grow things. And most stuff he grew were like a long range products, that is trees that you didn't see any financial windfall until 30 or 40 or 50 years out. So he took that background and then when he became a life insurance agent, I think I said something negative there, I'll keep going down that path. He melded that understanding of growing capital, I. E. Trees into growing capital, I. E. Dollars in a whole life insurance policy. And he saw this as a way to get away from the snakes and dragons. And that's what he calls bankers, snakes and dragons.
