The Guide to Understanding Your Life’s Meaning
8 Dec 2025 · 12 min
This podcast episode (Dr. Robert Rohm) answers the three existential questions—Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going?—using First Peter 2:9–10 as the scriptural anchor. Rohm frames identity as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation," defines purpose as declaring the praises of God through words and deeds (practical homework: be kind, "do the next right thing"), and describes destiny as moving "out of darkness into his wonderful light." He weaves personal background, global speaking experience (mentions events in Czech Republic and Krakow), and pastoral encouragement into a short, plainspoken sermonette.

If someone asks you, why do you want to live? What's the purpose of your life? Why are you even here? Do you have a good answer for that? Well, on today's broadcast, I'm going to answer the three questions that every person sooner or later, must come face to face with. And I think you're going to love the answer. Welcome to becoming wiser with Dr. Robert A Rome author and world renowned public speaker, as he shares stories involving his experiences and lessons learned in a good spirited, positive and fun way. Here's Dr. Robert A. Rohm.
Hi, I'm Dr. Robert Rohm, and on today's podcast, I want to share with you the three answers to the three questions that everyone must face. Back in the 60s, there was a big movement and everything was centered around these three questions. Who am I? Was? Question number one, why am I here? Question number two, and where am I going? Question number three. Those words, those sentences, those questions became the mantra of the 60s. And many of you may remember or you've seen pictures of what was called the hippie generation. Tune in, turn on and turn off. Tune in, turn on and turn out. Tune in, turn on and let your life fall apart. There were all kind of slogans and thoughts that took place during that period of time because people really had lost their way. Well, it's been my experience that until you really can come to grips and face to face with those three issues, those three questions, who am I, Why am I even here, and where am I going? You'll be a wandering generality. Zig Ziglar used to say it's better to be a meaningful specific than a wandering generality. I think that we live in a day and age where it's tragic that so many people don't really get that clear in their head early on. It's been unfortunate in my experience, and even you've, I'm sure, heard in the news recently that the number one cause of death among teenagers is suicide. How could that possibly be? How could it be that someone who's so young and has their whole life in front of them with great opportunity and unlimited potential in the world in which we live today does not want to live? Well, I think it boils down to the fact they don't know who they are, they don't know why they're here, and they don't know where they're going. So I want to share with you, and if you'll just bear with me, out. This isn't going to last long. This is very brief. The answers are found in second chapter. In the second chapter of First Peter, Peter was one of the apostles, as you remember. And Peter had a meaningless life. He was a fisherman. He caught fish. He killed them and he sold them and went to market and got up and did it day in and day out. His life was going nowhere. And then all of a sudden, he came face to face with Jesus and everything began to change. Now listen, I'm not talking about religion, I'm not talking about church. I'm certainly not talking about denomination. If anybody has a background that's diverse and varied, it's me. My father was a Russian Jew. He married my mother, who was a Seventh Day Adventist. The two of them didn't know what they believed about anything. After they got married, I came along and they began to wonder, well, how are we going to raise this child? So we all joined a Methodist church as we grew up, lived in a small town of Griffin, Georgia. There was a Methodist church, a Baptist church, and a Presbyterian church. So like all the other people, we joined one of the churches as time passed. My best friend was Catholic and we hung out together. I ended up going to a Presbyterian seminary, working in a Baptist church. So if you've ever heard of the ecumenical movement. Friends, I am the ecumenical movement. So I'm not talking about church, I'm not talking about denomination, I'm not talking about religion. I'm talking about. Understand the answer to three questions. Now, if you have a Bible and if you've got a phone, you can always look this up on a Bible app. But it's First Peter. There's two little short letters, first and Second Peter, First Peter, Chapter 2. And it's just a. Just very, very short. It's verses 9, 10.
Verses 9 and 10, two verses that sum up the three answers. Who am I? Why am I here? And where am I going? Are you ready again? First Peter, chapter two, verse nine and ten. Here we go. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. That's who you are. Now get that settled in your brain. Get that settled in your heart. You're a chosen person. You're not just a wandering generality, but your life has meaning. You. You are important. You are not a mistake. God doesn't make mistakes, and he didn't make one when he made you. You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood notice. Not just a priesthood, but a royal priesthood, you say? Well, I didn't know I was a priest. Well, if you are a believer in Jesus, your chosen people, a royal priesthood A holy nation. You're part of the family of God. I mean, I'm an American and I'm proud of that, but I'm also part of the nation of the kingdom of God, a people belonging to God. Again, one more time. You're a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. That's who you are. Get that settled in your heart. Friends, I don't know about you, but that makes me just so fulfilled, so secure. I'm not. I'm not just. I'm not a mistake. I've been chosen. I. I am part of the royal priesthood. Now, we might think of that in terms of being religious, but I like the word spiritual better. The royal priesthood means we have a spiritual nature about us. It's because we're not looking to the economy, politics, money or any other person to be important, to be royalty. We are that royal person, part of the spiritual family of God. Through our faith in Jesus. We're a holy nation, part of a kingdom that soon will become. Remember when Jesus, they asked him, how do we pray? Said our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom, kingdom come. Thy kingdom come. Your kingdom is his kingdom is coming. Thou will be done on earth as it is in heaven. You are a holy nation, a people belonging to God. That's the answer to who am I? Who am I? That's question number one. Number two, why am I here? Continue with that same verse. It says that you may declare the praises of him who called you. Do you know that the reason you are here on this earth now? I don't mean you have to go around with a halo around your head and beat everybody up with the Bible. But you are here because you can declare the praises of Him, God who called you? Let me. Let me show you how this works. Have you ever heard you do it? Really need to be a good person? I do everything in my power every day to be encouraging. I don't talk behind people's backs. I don't do things that are illegal, immoral or unethical. That's not what I do every day. What I do every day is through my words and through my actions. I declare the praises of him who called me. How are you doing? It's good to see you. I hope you're having a great day. Is anything to do for you? Sometimes I might say, how can I pray for you? Is there anything. How can I encourage you? I speak all over the world. I just got back from speaking in the Czech Republic, in Krakow, Poland and did a huge event over there. We had over 4,000 people, and I shared with them. One of the reasons they're here was to help each other was to be a blessing. All of us are better than one of us. T E A M team together, everyone achieves more. As a matter of fact, I'm going to give you a little homework assignment to show you why you're here. Try for one day, just one day, go out of your way to be good to other people. Don't say anything mean, hateful, nasty. If you're in a family, encourage other people. Say things like, hey, I hope you have a great day. Good to see you. I'm proud that I know you. You're a good person. Try it. You may feel uncomfortable doing that, and I know I did when I first started doing that years ago. But listen, I've found that when I look at someone and say, wow, thank you so much. I really appreciate what you did. That was. It's good to see you. You're an important person. I care about you. It just lights up their life. You can do that. You can do that. It's just part of the daily routine of knowing why you're here. I'm here on this earth. I know for a fact that I can declare the praises of him who called me. That is, I can do it in a variety of ways. I can be a good husband, I can be a good father, I can be a good grandfather. I can be a good business owner. I can be a good podcaster. I'm simply trying to declare through my words and through my works, through my deeds, through my efforts, through my lifestyle, reveal the praises of God who called me. I'm so grateful that I know why I'm here. I'm here to make a difference. I'm not going to walk around and act like I'm better than someone. I'm not going to beat you up with a Bible. I'm not going to walk around telling everybody, hey, look at me. I'm a super duper Christian. I won the super duper Drooper Snooper award for being the. That's not me. What I know is I just want to be a good person. I wear and looking at it right now on my right wrist, my mentor taught me many, many years ago, just do the next right thing. That's the secret to life. That's why I'm here. That's how I praise God day by day. Just do the next right thing. See if you just do the next right thing at the End of the day, you'll have a right day. Do that seven times, you'll have a right, right week. Do that 4.3 times, you'll have a right month. And do that 12 times, you'll have a right year and just keep on doing it and you'll have a right life. That's been my experience. That's because my life declares by my words, by my works, declares the praises of him who called me. By helping people, by being a blessing, by trying to encourage others. Then number three, first, remember, who am I? Second, why am I here? Number three, where am I going? Continue. Even in that same verse, all of this is found in two short verses in First Peter, chapter two, verses nine and ten.
Who called you? Are you ready? Here's where I'm going. Out of darkness into his wonderful light. You were not a people once. You were not a people, but now you're the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Where am I going? Out of darkness into his wonderful light. There was a time that I was a nobody. I was a nothing. I was it. Peter says you were a not a people.
If you have no relationship to God, talking about being a nobody, you're going to be a nobody for eternity. But when you put your faith in Christ and you trust him as the one who died and paid for your sins, he paid your way into heaven, friend, and offer salvation as a gift, then you become the people of God. Once you had not received mercy. See, a person who has not received mercy is someone whose attitude is, I don't need anybody. I have myself. They're full of pride, arrogance, self deception and conceited. But when you say, you know God, be merciful to me, I'm a sinful person, I need you. Please forgive me and make me part of your family. Once Peter says you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. So again, as we start to wrap this up, I told you it wasn't going to take long. Because these three things, if they burn in your heart. Who am I? Well, I'm a chosen person. I'm part of the spiritual priesthood. I'm a part of the holy nation. I'm a person who belongs to God. That's who I am. Well, why am I here that I can declare his praises day by day with my words and works, with my attitude, my deeds? Who called you? Number three? Where am I going? Out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once I was a nobody, but now I'm part of the family of God, I'm a part of the people of God. Once you had not received mercy, but now you've received mercy. Friends, I don't know about you, but that makes my day. Reason makes my day as I know who I am, I know why I'm here, and I know where I'm going. And you can, too. So let me encourage you. Here's. Here's how I want to wrap all this up. Let me encourage you just simply in an act of faith, get alone or even as you're listening to this and just say a little prayer. And a little prayer might be something like this, God, why am I here? I'm here because you created me and you have a plan and purpose for my life.
That's. That's so important. But who. Who. Who am I? Well, I'm. I'm God's child. And I'm Robert Rome. I'm God's child. And I'm here because he put me here. And I'm not a mistake. I'm part of his family. Who am I? Just say your own name there. Just say. Well, I'm like, that's. Here's the way I say it. I'm Robert Rome. I'm God's child. Who am I? Say your. Put your name there. I'm. Put your name. I'm God's child through faith in Christ. Why am I here? To make a difference, to be a blessing, to encourage some people. I don't have my Very seldom. I have my mind on myself. There's too many other things that I can do to care and love about other people. My family, friends, people all over the world that I meet to be in a word of. Give them a word of encouragement. Where am I going? Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? I'm going out of darkness every day of my life and walk into light. Light gives life, light gives direction. I don't walk in darkness. I'm not living worrying about who's going to catch me for doing something illegal, immoral, or unethical. I don't want to do that. I want to walk out of darkness into light, be a blessing and encourage others. You can do the same thing. It's just a matter of deciding you want to do it. I hope today's podcast has helped. I wish I could have known this back in the 60s. I could have helped a lot of people save a lot of time, effort and energy while they were destroying their lives with drugs, sex and rock and roll and finding out later the emptiness that they discovered in those things. They could have discovered who they were while they were here and where they were going and it would have been a whole lot better trip. I hope this has been helpful. Let me encourage you stay on the journey. God is good and he's going to bless you forever. Thanks so much. I look forward talking to you another time. Bye Bye.
