Are you aware of what are the most three important things going on in your brain every day, all the time? If you are aware of these three things, you are going to have a great life. But if you are not aware of these three things, life is not going to treat you like you hoped it would. On today's podcast, I'm going to explain to you in detail these three things that are always going on in your life and how you can work with them to have a successful, joyful, prosperous life.
Welcome to becoming wiser with Dr. Robert A. Rohm, author and world renowned public speaker, as he shares stories involving his experiences and lessons learned in a good, spirited, positive and fun way. Here's Dr. Robert A. Rome.
Hi, I'm Dr. Robert Rohm, and on today's podcast, I want to share something that took me many, many years to learn. But once I finally learned it and began to work with it, I noticed that life began to change. It was as though I had found the fountain of youth. It was like I had found the secret to success. It was like I began to understand how to work with life rather than have life work against me. You see, we're all on a journey of lowing, of learning and growing. Dr. Scott Peck, the famous psychiatrist who wrote the book the Road Less Traveled, said life is about two things. It's about learning and growing. Dr. Peck, a psychiatrist and a medical doctor, said he personally counseled over 40,000 people in his career. He said he began to realize that everyone is all messed up, including himself. Dr. Peck, being a medical doctor and a scientist, as a psychiatrist, began to ask himself, what is life really all about? Why do so many people have so many problems? What is taking place that causes self defeat, frustration, disillusionment, unhappiness, and a myriad of challenges that everyone faces? Dr. Peck not only wanted to help his patients, but he wanted to find a solution that gave people insight and understanding as to how life could best work. So he set out on that task and he said after many, many years, he discovered this two secrets that everybody needed to understand that life was about two things, learning and growing. As long as you're learning and as long as you're growing, you're doing what life is supposed to be about, learning and growing. But when you quit learning or you quit growing, you die. When you get to the attitude of, well, I know everything I need to know, your brain begins to shut down. I would encourage you, regardless of your age, always be a learner. Always be on the outlook for trying to learn something new. Look for the good, the pure and positive in things. But try to find a way to do things you haven't done before. You've heard it many, many times. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the same results. Then you've heard, if you want to get something different than you've been getting, you have to do something different than you've been doing. Well, the truth of the matter is you do have to learn and grow. And as you're doing new things, as you're learning new things, as you're growing in life, life takes on a whole new meaning. There's just nothing better than the feeling of doing something right and seeing good results or good fruit from it. Think about a farmer, for example. A farmer plants seed with a great anticipation of, of growing a great harvest. The farmer doesn't do it with, well, I don't know what's going to happen. Of course the seed has to germinate and rain and sunshine and all the other elements of nature kick in. But the majority of time the farmer knows, if I plant seed, I'll get a crop. The farmer also knows this and is very insightful. If I do nothing and expect nothing, that's exactly what I'm going to get. Nothing. So as you go through life, there are three parts of your brain that you have to learn about that you have to work with. Now, if you have a piece of paper and if you're driving, be careful. I don't want you to do this. You could just visualize a circle. But if you have a piece of paper, I would encourage you to draw a circle. Then draw a line vertically, that's from top to bottom straight down the paper. And then you'll have the paper divided in half. There's a left side and a right side. Okay. Then on the top of the left side of the paper, in your mind, this is very simple.
You'll be able to do it.
At the top of your left circle, write the word mind. M I N D write the word mind. Then at the top of the right side of the circle and leave a.
Little space because you're going to have.
To put another word in between them. On top of the right circle, write the word emotions.
All right?
So on the top left side, you have the word mine. On the top right side, you have the word emotions.
And in the middle, just above the.
Line, the vertical line that you drew on the circle, write the word will W I L L so across the top of the circle you should see.
Mind, will and emotions.
Now this Is great to write down, but it's even better to memorize.
Like right now, I have this in my brain. I told you it took decades for.
Me to learn this.
I wish someone had explained this to me. They could have gotten a piece of.
Paper, drawn this picture, and shown it.
To me when I was six years old. And I would have understood it because.
I'm going somewhere with all this. If you're an adult or you're a parent, please sit down with your children. Draw a circle.
Say, I want to show you a picture of something I learned.
I'm working on it.
Don't say to your child, I fix you. I want to straighten you out sound.
To show you how life works.
And then in the circle itself, write the word soul. S O U, L. You see, your soul is made up of three parts. It's made up of a mind, will and emotions.
Those are the three aspects of your soul.
Now, you might want to take some notes, but just listen.
I'd rather you learn it and have.
It in your brain than listen and write it down on a piece of.
Paper and forget it. Of course, to me, both are important that you learn.
You listen and you write things. I am the eternal write writer down or note taker. I write stuff down every day. It just helps me. She uses more than just one of my five senses. I can see it. I can touch it. I can feel it on a piece of paper. I can look at it. I'll say it sometimes out loud to myself to even hear, to see what it sounds like. It's not. Not so much. Don't have to smell it or read it, but I certainly use three of my five senses. So anyway, write down my mind, will and emotions. That is what makes up your soul. Now, let me explain to you what those three parts are about. Your mind is the way you think, the way you think your thoughts, the way you think. Let me give you an example. I'll give you an example of each one of these. This morning, I was working with an individual who made a mistake. And when I was talking to him about it, he was supposed to make a reservation for me. He said, I turned it over to. And I thought to myself, hell, I.
Didn'T ask you to turn it over to someone.
I didn't say that. I asked. You said, you told me you would handle it. Well, the way he handled it was by turning it over to someone else. Okay? And so I asked him, not hateful, not mean. I make mistakes every day. I'm not God. I'm like Everyone else. But I asked him, I said, did you double check with them to see that they did it? He said, no. He said, it's my fault. I said, no, really, it's their fault because they told you they would do it and they didn't do it. Now, follow me. Here's the way my mind works. I talked to someone about making a reservation. They said they would handle it. The way they handled it was turning it over to someone else who didn't do it. Then when I went back to get the reservation, oh, it hasn't been made yet. So the very. The gentleman was very apologetic. And he told me, he said, let me explain to you what happened. And I thought to myself, I know exactly what happened. You didn't do your job. You gave it to someone else to do. And here's the punchline.
You thought they would do it.
I said, can I share something with you that has helped me to be very successful? He looked at me and he said, please. And I said, double check everything.
Double check everything. In other words, it's my reservation. I'm the one responsible for it if it falls through. Guess who doesn't have the reservation?
Me.
So what I did was I shared with him. I said, I'm mad. I said, I want you to be successful in the future. I said, I asked you to make a reservation. You said you would. You turned it over to someone else, and they didn't do it. I said, do you know how that could be avoided in the future? You know what he did? He looked at me smile. He said, double check it. I said, that's right. You've got it. 99.9% of people on the planet don't think that way. They think, oh, it's okay, it'll happen. It's right. It'll get fixed. Somebody will take care of it. And here's the big quote. It's not my job, man. Well, you can live your life any way you want to, but I'm the one that's experiencing a massive amount of success by learning to say things like, did. Did you double check that? Could you confirm that? So there's plenty of time, and believe it or not, we got it fixed because I anticipated that I needed to double check it. And when I double checked it this morning, it had not been made. So again, I could spend all day long being upset at him, having high blood pressure, having a heart attack or a stroke because somebody did do what they said they could do or would do. Or I can be a grown, healthy, responsible, adult human Being and simply say.
Did you double check it? And ask myself, did you double check it? That's what your mind is all about. Your mind is your thinking ability. It's the ability for you to think. Now let's go to your emotions. You know what your emotions are. Your emotions are your feelings. Your emotions are the way you feel about things. I'm upset, I'm happy, I'm joyful, I'm so mad, I'm so angry. Those are your emotions. Every day of your life, you experience a myriad, a variety, a plethora of emotions. Sometimes we're happy and sometimes we're not. Sometimes things go our way. Hip, hip, hooray. And sometimes things go, I didn't see that coming. They go totally against us. They go contrary to what we were expecting to happen. Our notice, our mind on the left side and our emotions, they have to do it the way we think and the way we feel. Are you aware that every thing in your life is triggered by those two things? How you think and how you feel. If you and I were to go to a restaurant and I were to say, well, what'd you think about dinner? How do you feel about it? You would tell me. You could tell me very easily your thoughts and your feelings. If we went to a movie together and I could say, how do you feel about that movie? What'd you think about it? You would tell me your feelings. You would tell me, you're thinking, I wish I had known this sooner. They are intricately related. You see, if you're thinking a certain way, you're going to have certain feelings. If you're thinking good thoughts, you'll usually have good feelings. If you're thinking bad thoughts, you usually have bad feelings. It's around Halloween time. Is ever someone ever scared you? They walked you through a haunted house or they did something scary to you, they caused your mind to be afraid, so your feelings felt fear. Have you ever experienced Christmas time where somebody gave you a present, they smiled and clapped their hands, they were so excited to give it to you, it's because they were thinking, you're going to like this. And you could tell by the expression on their face and you got happy. You see, your feelings and your thinking go hand in hand. But wait a minute. There's one more word, if you'll recall, at the top of the page. Mind is on your left. Emotions are on your way, right. The word in the middle is the word will. Your will is your decision maker. Your will is what you process and make decision. It's your Decider. You see, I think a certain way and I feel a certain way, but then I have to make a decision. My will is my choices. My will is, do I say something mean and hateful or do I bite my tongue? My will is the final judge between the arena and the boxing match that's going on between my mind and my emotions all the time. So if someone had taught me, learn that your will. You ready for this? Is 100% under your control. You can't always control how you think about things, and you can't always control how you feel about things, but you can always control your choices. Your choices. I'm a male. I'm a grown man. I live in a world where it seems to be one of the gods of the world. The three gods of this world are money, sex, and power. And those three things are constantly floating in front of every man. I've never been a woman, so I can't speak to this from a woman's perspective. But in front of a man all the time, you constantly see those things of money, sex, power, and they are constantly put in front of us as those are the gods of this world. So I have to make myself and decide for myself, am I going to let those things run the show, or is my mind going to think? My emotions are going to feel, and my will is going to decide. I'm like every other person. I'm on the. I have a telephone, I have a computer. And every once in a while, something will pop up and it'll say, click here.
And I'm thinking to myself, now, I.
Don'T want to click there because I know that two things could happen.
Number one, you tried to sell me something.
Or number two, you're trying to infect my. My computer with a virus. Are you trying to do. It just seems evil. It just seems like that what's being tantalized in front of me is not good. Now my feelings might think, what could it hurt? My mind might say, you'll be sorry.
And neither one of those get the final say.
Do you know what gets the final say? My will. You have a will. You have a decider. You have a choice. So I hope in this week's podcast, you've learned basically the most important thing you've ever learned in your life. You have a mind and you have emotions, but you also have a will, your decider. That is the most important thing, because your will is in the middle. It's the referee, and.
And it gets to listen to your.
Mind, and he gets to listen to your emotions. But at the end of the day.
Unless someone's twisting you or your arm and holding you down or burning you.
With, you know, fire to make you do certain things, you pretty much handle your own will. You pretty much make up your own choices. Those words come out of your mouth. Those behaviors come out of your body. The way you act, the way you behave is all because you made a.
Decision.
To be act and do things a certain way.
So here's my challenge to you. How's your will going? How's your will doing? How your mind and emotions battling constantly.
Day by day about situation? Listen friend, you get to be the final judge.
Judge.
You get to be the final voice. You get to be the final authority.
In your head to think the way you think, to feel the way you feel.
But remember, in the final analysis, to act the way you act is up to you.
I've learned to bite my tongue.
I've learned to not be a jerk or smart aleck most of the time. I've learned that I just cannot live my life being upset because someone else didn't do what they said they were going to do. It's not good for my health and.
It'S not even reasonable. Nobody in the world is perfect.
We all make mistakes. Airplanes leave late. People forget to take things with them on vacation.
There's not going to be a perfect scenario.
But you can certainly have a better.
Life when you realize my mind's thinking, my emotions are feeling, but I get to make the final decision. I hope this podcast has been helpful.
For Remember you have a soul. Years ago there was a TV program.
On Saturday morning called Soul Train and it was a bunch of people dancing. I wish someone had had soul thinking, soul feeling and soul decision on Saturday morning. It would have been a lot more helpful than watch a bunch of people jump around and dance. Soul the real Soul Train is how you handle your mind, will and emotions.
They are real and the more you.
Work with them and understand them, the more successful you're going to be.
I'm Dr. Robert Rome. This is called Becoming Wiser.
That's what the podcast is all about. I hope you've become wiser by listening to this podcast and learning about your soul.
Have a great week.

Mind, and he gets to listen to your emotions. But at the end of the day.
Unless someone's twisting you or your arm.
And holding you down or burning you with, you know, fire to make you do certain things. You pretty much handle your own will. You pretty much make up your own choices. Those words come out of your mouth, those behaviors come out of your body. The way you act, the way you behave is all because you made a.
Decision.
To be act and do things a certain way. So here's my challenge to you.
How's your will going? How's your will doing? How your mind and emotions battling constantly.
Day by day about situation? Listen friend. You get to be the fidal judge. You get to be the final voice. You get to be the final authority.
In your head to think the way.
You think, to feel the way you feel. But remember, in the final analysis, to act the way you act is up to you.
I've learned to bite my tongue. I've learned to not be a jerk.
Or smart aleck most of the time.
