A short motivational podcast by Dr. Robert Rohm about shifting attitude from “I don't want to” to “I want to.” Using a personal story about repairing a stuck filing-cabinet drawer, Rohm argues that changing one’s “want to” opens possibilities, improves relationships and productivity, and cascades into other areas of life.

Today I want to talk to you about probably one of the most important things you'll ever hear in your life. Actually, it's something that you have said probably a million times. Today I want to talk to you about your Want to Welcome to becoming wiser with Dr. Robert A Rome author and world renowned public speaker as he shares stories involving his experiences and lessons learned in a good, spirited, positive and fun way. Here's Dr. Robert A. Rohm. Hi, I'm Dr. Robert Rohm and many of us have had an experience in life where we were asked to do something by our mom or dad or boss or husband or wife or children or someone or child or someone else in our attitudes. I don't want to, I don't want to do that. Why do I have to do that? Can somebody else do that? So today I want us to have a checkup from the neck up to avoid stinking, thinking and hardening of the attitudes and ask ourselves a question. How's my walk to? I believe if you can adjust your walk to, you're going to see some incredible things take place in your life. I know by understanding this simple principle of wisdom and that's what these podcasts are all about. Becoming a wiser person. I know that when I can adjust my want to, everything seems to get better and everything seems almost changes for the supernatural. And I'll explain. Just last week I was working with my filing cabinet. I have a filing cabinet and it has four drawers. Drawer number one at the top, drawer number two. Next is drawer number three. All open and shut like butter. I mean they are wonderful. When I need something, I just open the drawer, get it, put it back. I'm not the most organized person in the world, but I do like to have some kind of organizational skills taking place. And there's nothing better than file it right and find it fast. That's not original with me. I think someone wrote a book about that many years ago. But the truth is if you can find, if you can file something correctly, file it right and find it fast becomes a way of life. And I'm still working on that. But anyway, back to the filing cabinet. So the fourth drawer just doesn't work. I mean it's never worked. I'll pull on it and push on it and kick it and do everything I can to try to make it work. It's just as like it's bent or it's like out of square or something's wrong with drawer number four. So I've been putting up with this for a long Time. I just thought, well, the filing cabinets. Defective. I bought a file. I bought a defective filing cabinet. But three out of four drawers, that's 75%. That's not bad. Well, I decided the other day, and this is where it gets real practical. When you get ready to have to clean your room or do the dishes or do your homework or get up and go to work or anything else. I just had a bad want to. I had a. Didn't want to. I didn't want to fool with it. But I've been fooling with this filing cabinet for years, maybe decades. So the other day, I just had this strong impression, okay, look, man, you've graduated from five colleges and universities. Is there any way you might could even just take a closer look at what's wrong with drawer number four? And then. I'm not trying to get spiritual on you. I even prayed about it. I said, God, could you help me with this file cabinet? I know you can run a universe, but I don't know if you think about filing cabinets or not. That's a whole different ballgame. And of course, I talk to God respectfully and. And reverently, but like a friend. And I know, I think he created humor because that's kind of what I operate on most of the time. Something funny or silly. It just always has appealed to me. So anyway, I just said, God, could you kind of help me with this? I don't know what I'm doing now. I've never taken a course on filing cabinets. I don't know how filing cabinets are made. I don't know the history of filing cabinets. All I know is drawer number four never has worked. So I opened it and I shut it, and it was stuck. Then I pulled on it and kind of popped it open and thought, oh, man, this filing cabinets just not working. And then I pushed it in very slowly to see. Is it catching on something? Maybe there's a loose screw or a bent frame or a piece of metal in the way. Back and forth, slow as I could. Well, now I'm getting. I'm getting physically hot. So I had to stop what I was doing. I was at home by myself. I took all my shirt, and I pulled up a chair, and I decided, okay, now I want to. Do you catch that? Now I want to. I want to learn what's wrong with this filing cabinet. I want to fix it. I didn't stop what I was doing and enrolled in a class at the local community college on filing cabinet repair. I just changed my attitude. And I said, to myself. I want to. I want to learn what's wrong with this. I've been putting up with this forever, and I don't know what's wrong with if it's broken. I'm willing to accept that. I'm willing to take everything out of drawer number one, drawer number two, drawer number three, and drawer number four and throw it in the dumpster and find another filing cabinet. I can afford another filing cabinet, but there's something inside of me that just says, I want to see. Before I do that, I want to see if there's anything I can do about this. I changed my water. My want to went from I don't want to to I do want to. I do want to. I. I'm fairly intelligent. I've. I've prayed about it. I've looked at this, and now I'm going to see what I can do. So I took the entire fourth drawer out. When I took the entire fourth drawer out, the rollers. And I don't know how much you know about filing cabinets, but there's, like, these rollers and brackets that the file cabinet sits on. Well, when I pulled it out, the whole roller device came out, too. And that surprised me. And I thought, well, maybe that maybe there's something wrong because that's not supposed to come out. I can pull drawer 1, 2, and 3 out, and they kind of stop and catch. The drawer number one came out all the way on the floor. And I thought, oh, brother, now I've really broken it. I'll never get this back together. So I finally got it all back in. It still didn't work. And I was like, okay, this is. I'm getting close to the end here. I'm old, but I want to see what's wrong. Maybe I pushed it in too fast, too hard. So I pulled the drawer number four all the way out again, and the rollers came out, the drawer came out, the brackets came out. And then I took the bracket device off the file drawer. The file drawer was on the floor. And I lifted it up and I pulled the roller device off and I looked at it. I looked at the top, the bottom, both sides, the front and the back. It didn't look broken. It didn't look bent. Then I asked myself a question. And here's where the payoff comes. I hope you're listening. I asked myself a question. I wonder how this bracket looks in comparison with the other three that are working perfectly well, perfectly fine. So I open file drawer number one, and I looked at the side of it. At this metal bracket. And then I looked at the bracket in my hand, and I had it upside down. I had it upside down. I couldn't believe it. I thought, wait a minute, wait a minute. It's no wonder this thing's not working. The. It's an upside down. The. The rollers are still there, and the clip is still there, but I'm. I'm rolling it. I'm rolling drawer number four on top of the rollers instead of letting the drawer be on. On top of all the rollers. It's like the rollers were on the grid. I don't know what all these words are, but it was all the bracket on the top. It should have been on the bottom so the drawer could sit on it. So I turned it over as I was laughing, and I thought, thank you, God. I guess you do know how to fix a filing cabinet. And so I turned it all the way over. But I thought, well, I don't want to say anything too soon, because I still haven't put it back together. So I put the whole drawer back, the whole bracket back in, kind of checked it to make sure it was in all the way. Then I picked up drawer number four, worked with it, slid it back in, and nirvana, it went in like butter. Then I thought, wait a minute, I better pull it out to see if it'll come out correctly or if it's going to do. It's supposed to catch when it pulls a certain length. I pulled it out, it caught. It worked perfectly, y'. All. I sat there and I opened and shut that drawer about five times. I was so proud of myself. I thought, man alive, I will open a filing cabinet repair shop. I am so happy I learned how to fix this file cabinet, and I learned how to fix this drawer. But here's the. Here's what I really want to talk to you about. Hope you're listening, and I hope you enjoy these podcasts. Here's what I really want to talk to you about. I think everything changed when my attitude changed, when I went from, I don't know how to do this. I don't want to do this stupid filing cabinet, and I'm going to buy me another one, too. Wait a minute. I want to do this. I want. Take a deep breath. I want to learn how to do this. It's true it may be broken. It's true it may be beyond my mental intelligence to repair this file cabinet, but I'm going to at least change my attitude and want to do this. I began to feel lighter Heart light hearted, a little bit lighter in my step. Instead of me getting all bent out of shape when it didn't work right, I thought, huh, that didn't work. Let me try something else. Then my mind, watch carefully. My mind moved away from I don't want to to, well, what are some additional possibilities? And that's where you make money. That's where you develop good relationships. That's where you learn how to get a good education. What are some additional possibilities? You see, when you say, I can't do that, your mind shuts down. But when you say, how can I do that? Your mind opens up to all new possibilities. I don't want to do that. Your mind shuts down. I want to learn how to do this in my mind. Opened up in the next thing you do. I was able to fix, repair the file cabinet and the drawer works now fine. And I have opened and shut it two or three extra times just to make me smile. Now listen carefully. I realize this does not work for everything. I can't just say, I want to know how to do open heart surgery and go to the hospital and then they start letting me do open heart surgery. That's not the way that works. I have to get an education, I have to go to school, I have to get certified, I have to get degrees, I have to get authorized and all of the other qualified in order to do certain tasks. But listen carefully. I don't know how many times in a day we face situations like open heart surgery. Most of it is, I don't want to help my husband, I don't want to help my wife, I don't want to do the dishes, I don't want to do my homework, I don't want to walk the dog. I don't want to. I don't want to. I don't want to. You get the idea. I want to. I want. I'm talking to me and I'm letting you listen. I have changed my tune about several things that I have looked at lately and thought, I don't want to do that. And now I'm thinking, you know what? I want to do that. I want to do it better. I want to know how to do it, I want to look at it, I want to study it. I don't want to spend the rest of my life repairing filing cabinets. But here's the deal. When you work with yourself in one area, it spreads. It filters to other areas. You see, when your attitudes, I want to help clean the table. That's going to help you one More step in. I want to do my homework. That's going to help you. One more step in. I want to have a good relationship with my brothers or sisters. That's going to help you with one more step. And I want to have a good life. That's going to help you, too. I want to learn how to do this business deal so I can make more money. I am amazed. And you can listen to this all day long, but you, here's what I'm amazed about. You are the only person on planet Earth that controls and is in charge of your want to. It's yours. Oh, I know sometimes your. You can. Your boss or your teacher or your coach can make you. You're going to do this. You think to yourself, well, I'll do it because I don't want to get in trouble. But I don't want to. There it is. But I don't want to. There it is. Instead, you know what? I want to do this. I want to learn how to do this. I want to please my coach. I want to please my parents. I want to work hard and please my boss. I want to have a good life. I want to do things better, differently, and most of all, I want to have a good attitude. So the next time you get frustrated, and here's the great thing about today's podcast, you are not going to have to wait very long before this tidbit of wisdom kicks in. In other words, these podcasts are about becoming wiser. I promise you, I give you my word, within the next 24 hours, something's going to happen, and you're going to think, I don't want to do that. I don't want to watch that. I don't want to turn. I don't want to change that. I'm watching a history channel. I don't want to watch that. I don't watch a sport. No. What? Something's going to happen. And inside of your mind, in your heart, you're going to feel incense. I don't want to do that. And then you got to catch yourself. And if it's good and pure and wholesome and right, you're not wanting to do something illegal, immoral, unethical, or it's going to hurt another person. But you just think, whatever it is, it may be as simple as feeding the dog. I don't want to. Oh, wait, wait, wait. There's my Warner. Okay, I'm going to feed the dog, and I'm going to feed the dog better than I've ever fed the dog in my life or in the dog's life, and I'm going to have a good attitude about that. And you just took one more workout with your Warner. If you ever go in a gym, know when you walk in, the design of those weights, every weight, every treadmill, everything in the gym is designed to not cooperate with you. It creates resistance so you can get faster and stronger. Well, that's why you have a want to. If you can learn to work with your water and develop it and get it stronger. I know I don't want to do the dishes. I know I want to sweep. I know I don't want to clean the table. I know I don't want to do homework. I know I don't want to do this podcast. I hope you all can tell I'm fired up. And the reason I'm fired up is because I want to do this sometimes. I got to be honest with you. I don't want to always do this because it requires time, effort, and energy. I have to be looking at things, trying to find out what can I do to encourage you and to be a blessing to others. Well, when this happened the other day, and I think this is an answer to prayer, my water has been greatly improved and is getting stronger every day. I hope this has been helpful. I hope you'll practice it and I hope you'll look for something, whether it's at home, at school or work or play, that you don't really want to do. But you change your attitude and you want to do it, and you begin to see how that's going to help you in every area of your life. I'm so proud of you. I'm glad you listened to this because I know you want to. You want to become a better person, you want to become a wiser person, and you want to learn how life works. It all starts with you, Warner. I'm Dr. Robert Rome. I look forward to our next podcast together. God bless you. Have a great day. Take care. Bye. Bye.
