Becoming a Fortune 100 Consultant: A Guide to Transformation Success

A consultant shares how they went from working for free to advising Fortune 100 CEOs. They cover digital transformation, strategic thinking, content creation, and pricing strategies for building a consulting career in today's market.
30 years ago, I was working for free at a British utilities company just to get my foot in the door. Fast forward quite a few years and by 2018 I was advising Fortune 100 CEOs on business transformation. I also went on to become the founder and CEO of cxotransform. But that's another story for another day. So how did I get from working for free to to getting paid very lucrative fees by some of the most successful corporate executives in the world? Well, the answer is by becoming a self employed consultant, navigating the challenges and practicing what I preach when it comes to digital transformation. Now I want to share the exact steps you can take to build a successful consulting career, whether you're thinking of staying employed or or going solo. By the way, how did you first get started in consulting? Did you take a traditional path or did you find yourself here kind of unexpectedly? Or are you considering whether to become a consultant? There's no escaping the fact that without adapting to digital transformation trends, consultants risk falling behind in a very rapidly evolving market. Clients today expect not only strategic guidance, but also a partner who understands how to integrate digital solutions that drive results. Failure to align with these expectations can mean missed opportunities, lost clients, and a weakened reputation. Now, digital transformation isn't just a buzzword, it's essential for survival in today's consulting marketplace. Yet some consultants mistakenly believe the transformation is something that only their clients need. Ironically, many of these consultants face the same challenges that they caution their clients about. Now, before we dive in, let's make one thing clear. Whatever your consulting specialty, being an expert in your field is a prerequisite. Your clients expect you to know more than their employees. If you only had the same level of knowledge as they do, why would they pay you? You need to bring unmatched expertise and insight to the table. Now, if you prefer the security of a stable salary and benefits, employed consulting may be the path for you. Big firms like McKinsey, Deloitte or Accenture, depending where you live in the world, of course, can pay between 50,000 and 150,000 pounds a year or more. And there are thousands of smaller consulting firms that you could work for. But let's be honest. When you're with a large firm, you're basically an employee with a specific set of expertise. And there's less flexibility in how you run your projects or choose your clients. And you're called a consultant because you get sent out to your employer's clients to help them. Now, that firm sells your time as a consultant to their clients. And you get a small cut of that in your salary. On the other hand, if you're self employed, you have the freedom to choose your clients, set your rates, make your own rules, and receive all 100% of what the client pays for your expertise. But here's where many consultants struggle. They preach digital transformation to their clients, but they don't apply it to their own business. A lot of consultants post occasionally on LinkedIn and maybe other social media channels and wonder why they aren't getting clients. Well, it's because they haven't undergone the same digital transformation that they advocate for others. So do you prefer the stability of employed consulting or are you drawn to the independence of freelancing? Let me know in the comments below. Now, starting out as a consultant can be really challenging, and making your mark in digital transformation is even tougher. When I began, I worked for free, as I've already mentioned, just to get experience. But I knew it would pay off in the long run. And it did. Fast forward a number of years and I then had the privilege of choosing my clients, setting my own rates, and working with some of the world's largest companies. But how did I go from unpaid work to advising corporate CEOs? So in the rest of the video, I'm going to share the key strategies that help me grow and hopefully you'll find some insights to help you too. The first thing I learned is that success in consulting isn't about having the most technical skills. Far from it. In fact, many consultants get caught up in that technical aspect and they miss the bigger picture. The best clients don't hire us just for our technical expertise. They want someone who can also think critically and strategically, and who is a pleasure to work with. They're after business outcomes, not just technology implementation. Without the ability to think on a strategic level and get on well with people, you'll struggle to deliver the value that clients expect. For instance, rather than simply implementing a new CRM solution, a strategic consultant would focus on how this tool can directly increase client retention or revenue. This is why the best consultants understand the importance of value management. Now, once you've honed your strategic thinking, it's time to focus on a skill that sets top consultants apart from the rest, and that is asking the right question questions. Asking the right questions is what can really set you apart from other consultants you might be up against for client work. Instead of having all the answers, your role is to uncover the deeper business needs and guide your clients to solutions. And this is what leads to really high value contracts with these skills in place, it's also crucial to invest in yourself let's talk about why continuous learning is a must in consulting. Everything changes so quickly now you know what worked last year might be outdated today, especially in digital transformation. I've made it an absolute priority to continuously take my transformation knowledge and capabilities to another level through transformation courses where I focus on areas like transformation management and AI governance. Staying updated allows me to bring fresh insights and methods to every client engagement. This isn't about adding new skills just for the sake of it. It's about staying relevant and being ready to address complex client needs. Continuous learning shows clients that you're not just keeping up with the trends, but you're staying at the forefront of innovation. Continuous learning not only keeps you relevant, but it builds your market reputation, showing clients that you're committed to being at the cutting edge now, employed or self employed. If someone isn't prepared to invest in themselves, they shouldn't be surprised. If companies are, don't invest in them. Now let's look at another way to build credibility and attract clients, and that's through content creation. One of the most effective strategies I adopted many years ago was creating and sharing content online. By publishing insights, discussing industry trends, and sharing tips, I set myself apart from many other consultants around me. When clients see your expertise in action, it builds trust before they even have that first conversation with you. Content creation isn't just a marketing tactic. It's a really powerful way to communicate your value and make yourself visible in a very crowded marketplace. If you're not creating content, you're missing out on a key opportunity to position yourself as a thought leader. As consultants, we often tell clients to evolve, but how often do we take our own advice? Let's dive into why transforming your own consultancy is essential. Here's a truth that many consultants don't want to hear. You can't sell digital transformation if you haven't transformed yourself. Now, a lot of consultants rely on outdated marketing tactics, posting occasionally on LinkedIn and hoping clients will come knocking their door. But in today's digital first world, you need to do so much more than that. Apply these principles of digital transformation to your own business. Okay, Invest in tools like CRM systems, automate your outreach efforts, and use analytics to track client engagement. Build a digital presence that reflects the high value services that you offer. If you tell clients to use automation, AI or advanced analytics, make sure you're doing the same in your own consulting business. Don't for one minute think that your business is too small for that. There are plenty of teenagers using analytics and AI to run their own small business. You simply need to go out of your way in the way you expect your clients to, to learn what to do and how. Practice what you preach. Don't rely solely on LinkedIn posts, you know everyone has access to that. You need to go beyond that. Build a professional website, create thought leadership content and actively market your services online. Your clients are searching for expertise, so make sure they can find you. By embracing digital transformation in your own business, you're not only increasing efficiency, but you're also demonstrating credibility to your potential clients. Now here's another critical point. Whether you're employed or self employed, your expertise has to be beyond question. Clients are paying for insights and skills that they don't have in house. If your knowledge level is the same as their employees, why would they want to bring you in? You need to focus on areas where your expertise really shines and whether it's AI, digital transformation, change management. Positioning yourself as a thought leader in a specific niche is essential for your long term success. Share your knowledge publicly through blogs, LinkedIn articles or speaking engagements. You need to demonstrate that you have unique insights that other consultants or employees don't have. Now, let's talk about pricing. Whether you're employed or self employed, getting your pricing right is essential. As a premium consultant, you need to set a minimum rate that reflects the value of you bring to the table. You're not just another resource, you're a strategic advisor. And clients will pay you based on the value that you deliver, not the hours that you work. For example, if your work saves them a million pounds annually, your fee should reflect that. This approach aligns client investment with actual outcomes, fostering a partnership where both parties focus on achieving impactful results. It not only shows clients the true value you bring, but it also builds a sustainable consulting business model for yourself. So how confident do you feel in setting your consulting rates? Do you price based on value you bring to the table or are you trying to compete on price with others? Finally, let's talk about the mistakes that many consultants make and how you can avoid them. Now, before you dive into consulting, do your best to avoid these common mistakes. Firstly, understand that clients don't care about the tech itself. They care about results. So stay focused on delivering business outcomes. Don't preach digital transformation to clients if you don't apply it in your own business. Your clients, as I've already kind of mentioned, who fail to evolve digitally in their own business will often struggle in today's market. So what's been your biggest challenge in consulting so far and how have you faced any of these common pitfalls that I've mentioned? Something else to keep in mind is showcasing your case studies. This is absolutely essential because it validates your expertise. These real world examples demonstrate how your strategies lead to measurable outcomes, making it much easier for your clients to see the tangible impact you can have. Metrics like time savings, cost reductions or increased efficiency will give your case studies credibility. So whether you choose to stay employed or go independent, remember these principles. Focus on outcomes, build your brand, and lead by example with your own digital transformation. Now, if I can go for working for free to advising Fortune 100 CEOs, so can you.
