We're like family here. Five words that should set off alarm bells in any workplace. If your manager constantly shifts expectations, demands everything with mysterious urgency, and uses phrases like this to blur boundaries, you might be dealing with a toxic manager. Let's be honest, it's draining on your energy, killing your motivation and making you question your own abilities. But here's the good news. You don't have to stay stuck in this cycle. Today I'm going to share three proven strategies to help you take back control of your career and protect your well being. I'm Rob Llewellyn and after working inside large organizations in over 30 countries, I I've noticed some clear patterns with difficult managers. The problem isn't just bad management. It's about power dynamics, manipulation and control. And if you don't learn how to handle those situations properly, it can derail your career, your confidence and even your mental health. The good news? That with the right approach, you can protect yourself and your future. So let's dive into the first creating bulletproof documentation. Whenever your manager changes goals or moves the goal posts, follow up with a clear email confirming the new expectations. It's not about being combative, it's about creating clarity and a record of your efforts. Documentation ensures you have proof of your work, protects you in performance reviews, and keeps communication focused. Now the second strategy is what I call strategic boundary setting. When your manager makes unreasonable demands, respond with calm, professional questions to to prioritize tasks. For example, yes, I can absolutely take on this new project. Which of my current deadlines should I adjust to make room for it now? This shifts the responsibility back to them while keeping your tone professional. It also makes it clear that your time and workload are finite resources. And the third strategy is building a strong support network both inside and outside your organization. Connect with colleagues in other departments, document your wins, and maintain relationships with senior leaders. This isn't just networking. It's about creating witnesses to your contributions and securing allies. And here's a pro tip. Keep updating your skills and your CV or resume. The best time to build your options is before you desperately need them. Toxic managers often target high performers thinking they won't leave. Prove them wrong by always having choices available to you. When you implement these strategies, something really amazing happens. You regain confidence and control and your manager's manipulating tactics stop working as effectively.
