Ryan Shank documents his startup's first day in Techstars NYC, juggling last-minute paperwork, a team meeting, and a branding session. A reseller partnership could bring 3-10 new accounts weekly. Ryan skipped a friend's birthday to stay focused, arguing that consistency beats everything else right now.

My mom's an HR executive, so she can take care of all the— Good morning, Wagoneers! What's going on? I hope you guys are having a good day. Beautiful day, it's 80 degrees outside in New York. We're gonna go over to the office. We just put the new vlog up, so check that out if you haven't checked it out yet. By the time this comes out, you should have already checked it out though. Anyway, getting a lot of text messages right now. That means the vlog is live and things are happening. Techstars starts tomorrow, so we're putting some final things on. I had a lot of things that I was supposed to do a long time ago that are literally due tomorrow morning. Typical Ryan Ryan fashion, wait until the last minute, but we're gonna get it done. We're gonna knock it out of the park. Got a bunch of emails this morning that said, hey, uh, you were supposed to fill this out because we need this by tomorrow morning. Hasn't been done. Relax. So if you guys are new here, my name is Ryan Shank. This is my journey building a company. We're going through Techstars in New York City startup accelerator. Excited to take you guys along for the ride. Hope you guys are working hard. I hope you're out there. I hope you're being pioneers, being wagoners. Let's start the day. Building entrance walking in like a thing every single day, bro. Ryan Shank Shank. Do I have to sign in? All right, thank you. I don't know why we have to sign in now. Like, I work here, bro. Look who we have here, Mikey Mike, on a Sunday. We're trying to change the style, we're trying to change the style because I agree, um, but like it was too— it was like too much, like too cinematic. All right, you saw us come, uh, to the office today. Mike was already in here messing with the, uh, the logo, trying to— we're trying to clean up our logo. Actually chose a logo from 99designs. I didn't really love it, and then when I hired, uh, my first designer, he just completely redid the logo. But the thing is, he was a contract designer. He was amazing, by the way. You know, we weren't able to really perfect it, and my whole direction was like, I'm not that concerned, especially at those stages, with the logo and colors. I was really like, I want to build a beautiful product, get the product into the hands of customers so that I can sell it. Anyway, back in the office right now, Mike's working on the logo. I, uh, I talked to a customer earlier today on live chat. I guess it was considered like a customer support call. He was having trouble with one of his numbers, but I think it's user error. Kept calling the number and it completely worked fine. He said he was with someone else, they were calling the number, it was working fine, but he was calling from his phone and it wasn't working from his phone. And he's had a couple other instances of what I would call user error. So today, planning day, proactive day, we're gonna kill it today. Hope you guys come with us. Hope you're working hard. Let's go, guys! So we just got— we already got kicked out of our table. We were like posted up at this table right here. Got kicked out of Techstars where the whole program is going to be. And then this is not Techstars right here, but then this is going to be our table. So we're gonna have 2, 4, 6, 8, uh, plus these phone booths right here. Plus we'll have this table and then a shared conference room right there. Little like kitchen. And then obviously this back room, we were trying to post up back here. I think you guys saw it, but they wouldn't let us post up back there. So a lot of rules are happening. You know I don't like rules, uh, and we're having to— we're having to just deal with this because it's free office space. But, uh, but I don't like it. That's happening. Let's see if Kane has packed up his shit yet. Um, yo, the chandelier game though is real fresh, real heavy on the chandeliers. Get your shit and go. So like, man, we've like already been— already been— already been moved out. Our new table to Squad. This is going to be the money table for the next 3 months. This is where we're going to— I just realized that there is a Techstars orientation meeting tomorrow at 10:00 AM. We're going to have a team meeting at 9:00 so that hopefully we can at least hit the phones 9:15, 9:30, get a little 30 minutes in. I thought the Techstars meeting was just me. It's actually the entire team. It's probably gonna be really, really helpful to get introduced to the program and things like that, so. Ryan just went to the gym, but he didn't tell you that, so this is Kane's interjection, interjection, telling you that Ryan went to the gym. Well yeah, I wanna get ripped, but I wanna get more shirt. Well one, I wanna get more shirts so I can wear a shirt every day, but I also wanna get a shirt that says my name on it and just wear that every single day. Is that obnoxious? It's not, right? No, but you know why you'd wear it every day, right? 'Cause it's every day, bro? It's every day, bro! In the Uber, we're about to go get some food right now. Then we're gonna go grab a computer out of my apartment because there is one day today that someone's not staying there because I rented the whole place out. I told you, for 2 weeks, but there's one day where there's no one staying there. I'm not staying there tonight because my cleaning lady just cleaned it. If I stay there, then she's got to come again, and I throw her like $70 every single time she cleans, so I don't want to do that, so I'm not staying there tonight. Although that would actually be cheaper than staying in a hotel room. I should have done that. Dude, this street is dope. Little West 4th. That's why I like this area over here, because it's just like small. Just cop some rosé. $25 bottle of wine. Look at that. Oh, I'm sure if you go and touch it that they'll come out of the woodwork. Like, she's probably right there. She's selling on all corners. She's A/B testing which corner sells the best. That is smart. She's like, y'all put that there, I'll test over there, see which one gets the most buys, then we'll post up there for tomorrow. I'm gonna vlog this because— are you vlogging it? Yeah. Yeah, so, uh, one of my— one of my customers that signed up texted me and he goes, hey, I would like to see about reselling your service, your opinion. I can bring 3 to 10 accounts on a weekly basis for the basic plan. But that's huge for us because we basically don't have any customer acquisition costs and we don't have any onboarding boarding costs. We just have the cost of the actual product. So then we pay him just a small fee, a nominal fee to actually do that. And then we're able to just bring on a lot of customers. So this is huge. I mean, if we— if he could do one account a week, that's massive for us just in terms of number of new paying customers. So this is all— this is awesome. I'm telling him I'm loving it. Let's talk numbers and let's, let's do the thing. All right, guys, what's up? This is going to be the daily takeaway. So today what I want to talk about is why you should be consistent with whatever you do. So one of the things that I've actually been guilty of this in the past, starting off really strong and then fizzling out over time. One of the things that separates good from great is being able to be consistent and just plugging along at something through the good times and the bad times. It's really, really easy to get excited and start something, but it's really, really hard to continue and to keep that level of excitement. Can you continue going after something day in and day out for years? And that's really what it takes. So, you know, you see so many people, especially nowadays when it's really easy to just start something. Like, anyone can really get like a website up or a landing page, or you can create a Shopify e-commerce site and things like that. Or like, anyone can like get excited about something, but it's like, can you maintain that level of excitement? Can you be consistent and actually go after that thing? Personal problems, and you're fighting with your boyfriend or your girlfriend, your family is like mad at you, and you have to like make sacrifices. Like, I literally this past weekend, I didn't go to one of my really, really good friends' birthday at my hometown is because like I had to be here. I mean, we have to do this thing every single day because like, you know, I'm thinking in my head, one, I enjoy it, so it's like personally I feel fulfilled when I'm going through this process. But then the other thing, I have other people that now count on me, so I can't just be going off and doing those, those types of things. Like my head would be elsewhere even if I was there, so I wouldn't be present. So it's like, okay, if I physically showed up, like I would just be thinking and doing other things. Alright guys, so thank you so much. Today, really productive day for Sunday, especially, especially for Techstars starting tomorrow. Couple things that we did, I submitted payroll today, so that was really fun, and I had to calculate commissions. The other thing that we did is we have this program doc of all these things that we need to fill out for Techstars. I told you guys that we were late on that, but we've been filling that out today, like elevator pitch, one-liner, KPIs. I just showed my mom your very first vlog. Yeah? My mom's an HR executive, so she can take care of all the HR responsibilities, insurance, all of that, so you can focus on product and value.
