Calling EVERY Store in Calabasas for a Toy Wagon

Ryan Shank called every store in Calabasas hunting for a toy wagon to hand-deliver a sales pitch to a prospect. When stores only had oversized wagons, he paid an Uber driver $50 to coordinate the delivery anyway. The stunt didn't scale, but it showed how unconventional persistence can differentiate a bootstrapped startup.

Hold on one second, because I'm gonna need to— this is what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna get a Postmates to pick up the wagon and the phone, and then they're gonna bring it to FedEx. Then we get another Postmates, because you can't do multiple, multiple look drop-offs. Then we get another Postmates to go to FedEx, take the wagon, take the phone, pick up the thing, package it, and then they're gonna take it to the office and deliver it. Great, great, great. It's gonna look beautiful. Yeah, it's gonna be dope. Guys, the video you are about to see, this is my favorite video so far. Super organic, authentic, and it just escalated into this full-on hunt for a wagon. So give you a little backstory, this is This is what happened. So I was talking to this girl on the phone. She's shopping, she's shopping us against like 4 of our competitors. She works in a massive company and she's doing really, really detailed diligence on finding the right product. So I talked to her on the phone. It's gonna be a $1,000 a month deal and she's currently paying $3,000 a month. So we're gonna save her a bunch of money, all that. It doesn't matter, whatever. So after we get off the phone, I told her I was gonna follow up and send her a one-pager. And then in my head I was like, look, I want to do something that stands out from the pack. What I decided to do was hand-deliver her that one-pager and that sales deck that I promised her. Not only that, I wanted to step it step it up because that's not even good enough. I wanted to get a wagon and hand deliver her a wagon with the one-pager in the wagon. And not only that, I wanted to step it up even more and hand deliver her the one-pager, the sales deck, in the wagon with a custom cover page on it that's her logo plus the PhoneWagon logo equals heart emoji. Okay, then we went on a hunt for a wagon. So her office, uh, 2 days a week is in Calabasas, California. It's a small town north of LA, and we were calling every single store in the area. We got the one-pager and the sales deck printed at a FedEx shop, and you'll see what happened. But anyway, we get this Uber driver, call him up, and I was like, hey, I'm actually not gonna get in the Uber, but I'll give you $50. He was like totally down to do it. He did it all. He went to the place, got it, he hand-delivered it to her. He sent me a picture, and the whole thing like worked out, and it was actually awesome. Roll the clip. Wait, do they have it at this location though? He's got the wagon. He's got the wagon. It's about 7 inches. Is there a bigger wagon? Or the wagon? The wagon's clutch though. You need the wagon. I know what I can do. You stay there. Bed Bath Beyond. Look at this, with an umbrella. I want to see if you have an item in stock. The Radio Flyer Wagon Umbrella Rack. Do you know the best place around here that would have a wagon? Radio Flyer Wagon Umbrella Rack. So there's a picture of it? Yeah, but I can't— Dang, you don't have it? You're so devastating. Um, do you have any similar item that is a wagon? Hey Sean, how's it going, my man? I have a question. Do you guys have a wagon? Are you kidding me? I can't get a wagon? We could set up for any workshop in like a couple minutes. I don't understand why no one has wagons and cowbasses. Hey, I knew you didn't see it. You guys had, uh, sorry, little red toy wagons. I hope you're getting on this. Wait, so the baby store in Toronto, Calumet, has no wagons? Have you already checked that? Hey, do you guys have, um, toy wagons? Just small toy wagons in Calumet. Easygoing wagon. Is it dope? Compare it to like an iBoss. Is it like the size of like a phone or is it like— Oh, it's got a door on the side. We don't need that kind of wagon. You're talking about the Radio Flyer kids little red toy wagon? Can you buy it over the phone? Oh, that's hot. Yeah, get it. Can you ride over the phone? If we can pay for it over the phone, I'll get homeboy to pick it up in like 10 minutes. Hey, this is Brandon. Hey, it's Ryan from Uber, what's up? Hey, so I have a kind of a big ask of you and I'll give you like $50. Do you have Venmo or like PayPal for like money? We're actually a company and we're based in New York and we're trying to get a wagon from Walmart, which is where I have this Uber picking up at, and the destination is a FedEx store. So basically we want to pick up this wagon from Walmart. What's the like in-store price? Get a, then we have something named print print it out at FedEx and then we want that all to then get delivered to this other place. So I'll change the destination on Uber. So what I was thinking is that you're on— $54 to buy it in the store? Oh, it's a small wagon. It's like a, it's a small wagon. One, this little toy red wagon is $68. I get a printed thing. I'm like, that's a $68 red wagon. And then it will be 10 to 15 minutes FedEx. I'm gonna pay for it right now. FedEx take it in the wagon, send me a pick, and then I'm gonna change the destination. You're gonna drop it off for this lady at her office. $14.72 online, and she said that's the only online price. And I said, all right, what was it in store? And she said it's $68. But can we just buy it? But what's— oh, okay, okay, all right, thank you. Wait, wait, we have to buy it over the phone? She's double-checking the price now. I— come on, Jesus. It doesn't make that much sense for it to be $68. Mike, we need the wagon! We just spent like 3 hours. Sorry, Brandon, we're just trying to get this wagon. Brandon, you're our savior, man. We're not not at Walmart. I'm gonna get you to pick up the wagon at Walmart. We're not ever gonna get in the car. No, no, you just got to get the wagon. Hey, you still there? So like, you're gonna have to like park and stuff. He said, are you at Walmart? I'm like, no, no, I'm not at Walmart. Just go in and I'll tell you where inside. Hey, is that, is that still a small little wagon? Like, how small though? Like, like, like, do you put children in the wagon? No, no, no, we have somebody like there right now that wants to pick it up. Just buy the wagon. We're either gonna get the wagon or not. A 3-in-1 fold wagon. No, we don't need a 3-in-1. We need just a 1-in-1. Yeah, we don't want that. We were looking— we wanted like a little toy wagon. Alright, fuck it. We're not doing the wagon. Tell Brandon. Yeah, not something that you put kids in. Alright, Brandon. Uh, no, we don't want anything that like people get into. We want something that's just like small that you can hold in your hand. You know? Like a scooter. What about— what about like an old western style wagon? Alright, I'm gonna tell him to go, right? Alright, I'm gonna tell him to go, right? Hey Brandon, sorry for the false alarm. They didn't have the right wagon, so you can just go to the destination in the Uber. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, it's just two things. And then when you get there, when I see that you're getting there, I'm gonna change the destination to where you're gonna drop it off. It's like, it's like less than a mile away from, from the FedEx. All right, thank you so much, man. So did we get the wagon or what? What's going on here? No wagon? No wagon? Yo, why isn't he responding? Come on. He's probably talking. He's, he's hand delivering. I hope he has the script down though. Did you get a picture of what I keep asking him for a pic. I haven't called you. It'll be on the vlog in 2 days. Good. She got it? She got it. How'd it go? I was just in there, I gave it to Rita and— Got it, got it, got it. Okay, cool. Can you send me a picture of them? Did you take a picture of the docs? I just want to see what they look like. Yo, that's gotta separate us from the pack. You would think. So that was a fun, crazy video. It was a crazy day. That was so cool to be able to— So we got Davis, who you saw in the video. He's a Techstars associate. He actually goes to Wharton, by the way, so he kills it. He's super smart. He was the one that was like helping us. He was on the phone with Toys R Us and all these other stores trying to get the wagon. So it was nuts. It kind of sucks that we couldn't get the wagon, but we did hand deliver her the hard papers to her office that same day that we talked to her on the phone. So that is something that, you know, at least I feel like is gonna make us stand out from the crowd. It's something that not a lot of other people are doing. As you see, we couldn't get the wagon, but don't let that stop you. You know, you got to like persevere through, through hardships. When there's wagons or no wagons, you got to just keep moving forward. And that's like the daily takeaway today. And I hope you guys are out there doing cool stuff, getting creative with your businesses and doing things to win customers. Obviously sending like little wagons like that hand-delivered doesn't really scale well, but I think it will help you build a business and get it off the ground. Thank you guys for joining us. If you're new here, my name is Ryan Shank. This is our journey building PhoneWagon from the ground up. No outside funding. We're fully bootstrapped. We're going through Techstars. I hope you guys are out there working hard, being pioneers, Wagoners, being wagoners. Peace!
