How I Used To Make Money Online | Vlog #51

Ryan Shank, founder of PhoneWagon, walks through how he used to make money online by building lead-generation landing pages and selling them to local businesses like plumbers and HVAC companies. He built scalable pages with Unbounce or WordPress, tracked phone numbers, captured form leads, and ran paid traffic to scale nationally.

Is that low? It's low, yeah.
Good morning, Wagoneers! What is popping, guys? Today is an amazing day. It's absolutely gorgeous outside. It's coming to the end of summertime. We got a lot going on today at the office in Techstars.
It's August 29th. There's 30—
I think 1 day's left of Techstars. Today is an investor preview day. That means we literally have 12 meetings today.
I don't know what this truck is, but I'm just gonna lean on it.
We have 12 meetings today with potential, like, investors that they bring in through the Techstars network. We're gonna vlog a bunch of them. Some are video meetings, some are regular meetings, so we're super excited to just talk to these guys. They invested in other, like, B2B SaaS companies and other companies like us, and they've already seen our little preview and they're interested in meeting with us. So that's really, really cool. Uh, we have Jim, this new hybrid role that we just hired for. He got his first sale already yesterday. It was only his second day. Absolutely incredible. That hasn't ever happened before in the history of PhoneWagons. So we're having a lot of luck. We're ramping back up. I think I told you guys that we're actually having, like, a down week and a half, but we're gonna try to ramp back up.
We just got a lot of stuff fixed on the product, which it sucks.
Like, when you're, when you're, when you're building stuff, like, I'm not even technical, so it's like I feel like I have to rely on your team.
And you're gonna have to do that even in sports. Like, you have to rely on your team for things that you can't do that are out of your, you know, specialization and stuff like that.
I hope you guys are out there working hard.
If you're new here, by the way, my name is Ryan Shank.
This is our journey building Phone Wagon from the ground up.
We don't have any outside funding.
We're doing this all on our own. We're going through Techstars in New York City. And I hope you guys are out there working hard.
Let me know if you're not, because then I'll whip you into shape. I'm just kidding.
Anyway, I hope you're out there being pioneers, being Wagoneers.
Welcome Welcome to the vlog! Look at the comments rolling in on the vlog. On the new one?
Yeah. Some guys like, "Love hearing about your journey, especially connected to you showing your vulnerable side." Great.
My name is Ryan Shank. I'm founder of PhoneWagon.
Perfect.
Yeah, that's like, right, yeah, like the Unbounce's of the world, like all of that kind of stuff is like super in our wheelhouse. Like anyone that's doing that, by the way, Thank you very much for taking the time and meeting with me. Nice to meet you as well. See you later.
Bye.
Yeah. DJ Ryan, you got a meeting right now? 2 minutes. With what? Your meeting. With whom? David. David Segura. Where is it? Yeah, so you just like go into the site and find like email and phone.
I need to go to the gym. How you doing, Ryan?
Good. Can I shoot this or no? Yeah. What'd you get today?
Uh, 3—
How many dials? How many dials? 87.
Is that low? It's low, yeah. I would create like a task list and then run through that basically just like—
So there is task lists in there. I just personally—
So I had a ton of awesome feedback from the video yesterday where I initially was talking about how I used to just like sell things and the Jay-Z tickets and all of that. But I eventually got into how I was throwing up landing pages and basically driving leads in the form of phone calls, but also in the form of like web leads and stuff to small businesses and making money that way. I just had a customer come into the office today. That vlog is actually going to go up tomorrow, but I wanted to elaborate a little bit more on what I used to do and what you guys can do. One, if you're into making money on the internet and if you like, like selling leads and that sort of thing. So what I would do there's a couple different things that you can do, but you can go to like Unbounce, for instance, and you can create a landing page. And you can do this, you know, in WordPress, or you can do it in ClickFunnels or whatever it is. What I used to do, it's super easy, there's templates in there, is I would go and I would create a landing page on Unbounce, and I would basically make the landing page as if it was a local business, okay? What I personally did was I put up a website or a landing page as if it was a plumber in New York, okay? And you can do this for any vertical. You can do it for a spa, a salon, you can do it for HVAC company, um, it doesn't matter, right? But you just put up the landing page, you put up the website as if it's a local business, and then you start You put a tracked number on there and then you also get the leads when people fill out the forms.
Okay?
So what I would do is I would do that, then I would fill out the Google listings, the Google local listings and things like that, and I would make it look like this was an actual business. I would put content on there. I would publish it out. And then from there, what you can do is you can just wait for it to rank in organic or you could start buying AdWords and generating traffic to that website. So a little bit of the breakdown is if you are driving traffic to the website and you're trying to get a lead, what you can do is you're going to be buying AdWords and let's say it costs you about $30 to generate a lead from that website. Okay? Buying clicks for $5 and it's going to take, you know, whatever, 10 clicks, $50 a lead. Or let's say they're a little bit less, but whatever it is, let's say it's $30 per lead. Okay. And you know that you can take that lead, right? Whether it depends on the vertical of how much you can sell it for. If it's a remodeling lead, you can sell those leads for about $80 a lead. That's crazy, right? If it's more of like a pool repair or like, you know, plumbing services, probably sell for like $30, $40 a lead. You're going to want to then take that lead that, you know, you generated from, from some paid traffic and then you're going to sell it to the business, right? But you're going to be positioning this site as if it's it is the business. And then eventually, once you start to get a lot of leads coming from this, then you can turn around and you can, you can get a deal with a local business. You can say, hey, you know, I'm generating 20 leads a week, 30 leads a week from this site, you know, will you pay me $40 per lead? Right? And then you can shop it around. Um, it's super easy to do. We're gonna have some links in the description. Set up an Unbounce page, either put a tracked number or just, you know, have a, have a web lead form, whatever you want to do. It depends on the different vertical. Generate the traffic. The, the thing is where you can really make the money is once you start ranking in organic search and you're ranking high on like Google Local and you're either generating phone calls from those directories or phone calls from the sites directly, but from free traffic, from organic traffic, that is when you can then take that free traffic. Basically, your cost of goods sold is literally free. You're only paying for the site and then any other kind of tools that you have in your stack, and then you're pushing out that traffic, and then you're basically reselling that free organic traffic to someone in the form of a lead because someone came to that site, they trusted it enough, they want to hire or they want to, you know, work with a plumber or whatever the business is from that site. Okay, those are some things that like I used to do. It worked. And then what I did is I actually ended ended up scaling it like nationally. It's like I would have like electrician sites in like the top 10 cities. And you could do some keyword research. You could see like what verticals have the most traffic in which cities and you could see which ones are, you know, competitive to rank high and things like that. But I had like electrician sites. I had maid services sites, HVAC sites. I had all these like different landing pages. My Unbounce page had like 40 different sites in different cities. And what I was doing is I was just getting traffic to each of those and then I would get, you know, an HVAC company or an electrician in Los Angeles. I remember I had this one electrician in Long Beach, right? I was selling him leads for like $30 a lead, getting um, probably like 5 to 10 leads a week, right? So it's like you're making hundreds of dollars per site, um, especially once it's from the free traffic. I mean, you're just like raking it in, and it doesn't require that much work. It takes a lot of, a lot of upfront work and effort setting up the sites, optimizing them, getting them to rank high. But once you get, you know, your traffic rolling in, you're going to be able to do this, and it's all scalable. And that's the biggest thing— you always want to do stuff that's scalable. You never want to do stuff for a quick buck that, oh, you sell it and you can't do it anymore, right? You want to do things that are scalable. That's what I used to do. Links are going to be in the description. Set up a, set up a page, drive traffic to it, basically package take that traffic and sell it in the form of a lead. Once you start to get people that come to the site and will fill it out and request the services. So it's pretty easy to do, but I did want to elaborate a little bit more on that because after I shared it yesterday, I got a ton of people that were hitting me up about it. Plus I literally just had someone come into the office today that has a ton of Unbound sites and they're doing something similar except it's actually their business. They're not like, uh, an agency doing it. So I wanted to share that with you. Hope you guys have an awesome day. End of summer's coming, so you're gonna have to be doing stuff for football season, for the school year. Let's go out there, let's set up these sites, let's make money.
