When you fire an employee, there should never be any surprises. They should know it's coming. If it's for performance, there should be notices well ahead of time. Hey, you're not hitting the goals. What can I do as a leader, as a manager, in order to help you? Hey, these are the goals. You still didn't hit it. We're going to need you to hit it next month. And you just have to have those crucial conversations and you have to be very explicit, very straight up, and you have to take the emotion out of it. It's a business decision, but there should never be any surprises if you're firing the person.
