MAKE $100,000+ WITH SKILLSET + TOOLSET (ACTUALLY WORKS!) | Vlog # 79

Ryan Shank is building PhoneWagon, a SaaS platform for managing customer accounts and permissions. He's in fundraising conversations with a lead investor and a customer-investor, and sees a huge opportunity in freelancers and small businesses that now have both the skills and tools to work independently. His team is posting daily vlogs to build community around the product.

And my new thing, by the way, is saying like, all right, people have skillset, we're giving them the toolset. What up guys, it is Ryan. Today's vlog is an absolute smash. So today, first of all, I wanna welcome you. Thank you so much for following along on the journey. If you guys are new here, my name is Ryan Shank. This is our journey. We're building PhoneWagon from the ground up. We don't have any outside funding yet, but we are about to. So one of our lead investors, one, we only have one lead investor. Our lead investor is basically calling a lot of our customers, just doing diligence, which is totally normal. And it's really funny. One of our customers is actually so interested, he's like really likes PhoneWagon so much that he actually wants to now participate in the rounds. And we were like talking through that. I was talking with Alex of Techstars and like asking him like, hey, is it normal? Is it cool if like customers come in on the round? He's actually said it's like totally normal. What's happening here? You're breaking the air. Hey, I was just, is there a downside to having customers in the round?
I would ask him if he is an accredited investor first. Secondly, I would just say minimum check size is $100K, so I would smoke him out. I would just say like, have you ever done an investment before?
Yeah.
Just because what you don't want is you don't want somebody coming in and like trying to like bring their like uncle lawyers on you.
Right, right.
That would be like crazy weird.
Yeah, well, I didn't know if there was some like unspoken rule like don't raise from your customers because then they try to like, you know, drive the product, you know what I'm saying? Like where it's like—
No, I mean, again, listen, look, this is the thing. They're not gonna be able to exert a control unless they have controlling stake or they have a board representation.
It's just how it works.
It doesn't matter. Sure, he can like tell you shit, but he can tell you shit now.
Right.
It doesn't matter. Like, this is like a separate arrangement, you know?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh yeah, 100%. Separate arrangement. See, like shit like this, like if it was like broken and slow like this after he leaves, like what are we, just fucked for the day? Did it happen above it like that? Like anytime we do anything on live, like we should, if it fucks it up, we should just be able to push a button and just go back to exactly how it was. Yeah, in order to— Yeah, like you just search the point plugins that can be, you know, a ton of traffic from your AdWords. Well, other things too that you might want to add, you know, we've— you may want to increase, but like you can give your clients logins if you want with even limited permissions. All right, what's up, man? So, um, a couple things that you can do. So I'm in the account right now, you're in here, you're actually as an admin. So just so you know the flow, so you can add all of your clients over here. So if you're testing this out for a retailer— Yo, Ivan, what's up, man? So we had this one customer that has signed up so long ago and I was actually chasing him for so long, and he finally signs up for like 3 different accounts. It had been back in March when he originally signed up. Finally talked to him on the phone. He actually called me and proactively wanted to become a paying customer. Yo, Ivan, what's up, man? And I was able to tell him like, hey, you know, you didn't have to sign up with 3 different accounts. Like, you could have just signed up with one account and then added your customers under there. So you got that guy all figured out. Awesome, man. I appreciate you. Um, yeah, let me know if you need anything. Cool, man. See you later. All right, I'm gonna need at least 100,000, bro. All right, here we go. Software company, they come in at like— in terms of like how to basically acquire more customers. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and then so going forward, we're just gonna really put out like a lot of content. So kind of be like more thought leaders. 250K. So basically, dude, can you imagine if you live on a freaking ranch and like what you can do with the gate? Like have the gate with your letter, that'd be sick. And then I went into the— so basically what we do every day, we have the vlogs and then we record intro, outro, and usually I go on a rant. So Kane has to kind of like dice it up and like make it actually like presentable so that like normal humans can consume it and they can understand it. Because like, right? Mine's going in a bunch of different places, and he cut out the most important thing that I made, my most important point. And it's basically about the explosion of small businesses and freelance businesses and what's happening in the market today. Roll the clip, Kane. We're seeing an explosion of these types of people, okay? People who like worked at agencies and just in general people who are like at corporate jobs, right? But they have access to all of these tools, right? And they have the skill sets and now they can break out on their own and become like their own boss, right? Sort of like it's, it's, it's entrepreneurship obviously, but if you think about, it's like this freelancer, sort of like the WeWork economy, where people have, you know, they have the skill set, they have the tools and everything. As long as they can acquire customers, they're able to not have to work at a job, right? If you think about it, you get paid, you know, $75K a year or something, right? Well, the only thing necessarily that you need your job for is because they basically give you the leads, right? They give you, you know, the people to do, but you have the skill set, you, and then they give you the access to the tools and the information and stuff. But it's like, you're able to get that and you're able to acquire the leads, like you don't have to work there, right? You can make that same amount of money on your own from wherever you want. So anyway, we're seeing like an explosion of these like small freelance, you know, businesses. If you think about it, people who are using like Shopify, who are just selling online, they're using like landing pages, or even like in other industries like, like StyleSeat, right? People like, like freelance, like, uh, hairstylists and like people in beauty and wellness and even freelance like yoga instructors and stuff like that, right? You're starting to see this. It's massive. So that's the clip. I mean, that is the right— how are you going to cut out that clip? Anyway, that's kind of what's happening in the market. That's what we're seeing. And that's sort of like this new pitch. And actually the CEO of of like Gloss Genius kind of came over to me because she was like experiencing like the same thing. Like they're building tools. And my new thing, by the way, is saying like, all right, people have skill set, we're giving them the tool set. That's hot, right? That's hot. Skill set. That's the thing, it's like you give a chance to this and then you come in, right? And it's sort of like that. By the way, Bai drinks super good. I was off of them for a while, back on, love them. Good, 5 calories, a lot of antioxidants. Who knows? Could be good. I don't know, probably bad for you. Anyway, I'm gonna let you guys go. Thank you so much. The vlog today was a smash.
