Ryan Shank, founder of PhoneWagon, a Techstars-backed call-tracking startup in NYC, discusses three urgent problems: product gaps in Twilio integration, low sales close rates to agencies, and the need to hire a Customer Success lead. He's transparent about the challenges and actively recruiting through referrals.

Yeah, that's awesome. Um, we definitely don't have that. Good morning, Wagoners! I hope everyone is out there having a great day. I appreciate you guys following along on the journey. The vlog today is super, super awesome, and I just want to give you guys a sneak peek at— actually, we're not going to give you a sneak peek today. We're going to give you a sneak peek in a few days. You guys have to tune in. We have some amazing announcements that are coming up. You guys are, I think, going to enjoy them, and I really appreciate everyone following following along. And that's what we're trying to do is give you that behind-the-scenes insight into like things that, uh, we got going on, which I think like you can benefit from, right? It's like value. I'm trying to just give, give that kind of like value. Take it and run with it. You know, you get what you put in, or you get out, you know, as much as you put in. You can put in as much as you want or as little as you want. We're going heads down right now on product because what I'm noticing is that, you know, we're, we're losing a few customers. Not a lot. We're using— losing a few customers because of certain features that we don't have. Basically, we have to figure out the product stuff. We, you know, our developers, our engineering team, they're doing an amazing job. We're just running so fast that we literally don't even have QA that can keep up with the product development. And I'm starting to jump back on demos right now, 'cause I wanna give a lot of feedback to the sales team and just make sure that they're saying the right things, that we're creating a sense of urgency, and we're being really enthusiastic about, you know, when we're talking to customers about getting them on call tracking, because it's like, some of them are not using it at all, which is, that's like our crazy pain point. Like, you have to be using call tracking, especially if you're managing, you know, ad spend for clients, right? It's like, how are you gonna determine how you're gonna spend their money if you don't know what's happening with the amount of money that you're actually spending for it? So that's a crazy, you know, pain point that we need to just press, press, press. And then the other thing is like, if they're on an existing platform, we really have to have that differentiation. So anyway, not to get too deep into the trenches, but just like working with the sales team and just trying to like, you know, make sure that they're saying the right things, because like, again, the close rate's not where we need it to be. B right now, so we're trying to get that up. Our show rate's amazing, we're able to get these guys on demos, you know, now, and I feel like that's even further down the, like, this, you know, that's further down the funnel, and it's just like, let's just do the demo, say the right things, then boom, convert, then get them over to customer success. And speaking, by the way, of customer success, this is like our most important hire right now, so in the vlog today, did an interview, really liked her actually. She came highly recommended from another Techstars company. That's it, by the way, if you're new here, my name is Ryan Shank. This is our journey. We're all building PhoneWagon from the ground up. You can watch us every single day, 7 days a week, doing our thang, grinding out here, talking with customers, talking with partners, talking with employees and people, you know, that we can just work with. And we're just like out here doing it, putting in the work and just trying to like build this thing up into a $100 million company. So yeah, I'll let you guys go, but I hope you're out there working hard, being pioneers, being Wagoneers. Peace! The risk kind of in the use case that you're talking about, so one, we're gonna show the same number to the same visitor because we cookie them. Hi, I'm Anna. Nice to meet you. I really liked her. We're talking to a bunch of people because like now, you know, I've made a mistake in the past of like hiring too quickly without interviewing the right amount of people. So I've told myself I'm gonna actually personally interview at least 7 people for this role before I even make a decision. Even if I love someone, I just wanna have the context and like, I wanna be able to compare them against someone else. So that's what we did. Interviewed Mike, Mike was in on the interview. But basically, high level is like, this customer success role, by the way, if you guys know anyone for customer success, someone that can help with onboarding, implementation, setup, handholding the customers, and then ultimately help them expand, expand their accounts, let me know. Shoot me an email, ryan@bonewagon.com. So that's the role, and we need it before we get salespeople because it's like if we have all these sales coming in and then no one's helping them get set up, we're gonna get churn and we don't want churn. Retention's the name of the game. Now Twitter does like the shortcode, so it's like t.co. We're actually solving for that right now, so, but let me see if there is a workaround. Yeah, I mean, I think that was a question for Jim, but I'll just answer it. Yeah, yeah. Different unique number and then after it's displayed we just like throw it out. Like these same numbers are getting circulated. And also, do you want to go to behavior and show the, uh, the events, like the phone calls as events getting pushed in as well? Yeah, let me, I, we're, we're like triple checking right now. Oh, 100%. Yeah. We have a ton of people that are doing, using static numbers on like actual creatives. Yep. So what we do is actually called a cleansing process. Um, so we're built on Twilio, which is what most of the call tracking platforms and a lot of these kind of like call type tools are built on, but there's a cleansing process. Yeah, that's awesome. We definitely don't have that. If an agency isn't using any call tracking, they'll implement it and then instantly their clients are like— they're able to one, prove to their clients like, I told you, you know, you were getting some calls. Because now it's like, hey, you're probably getting some calls, you know, they're from the stuff that I'm doing. But now it's more, you know, here's hard data that says like, hey, these calls are from you know, these campaigns that I'm generating for you. And then once you start taking those calls and putting them into your count, total count of leads, your effective cost per lead is, you know, even lower, right? So you're starting to either hit or beat the target cost per lead with the client. What we're seeing a lot of times is that our, the agencies we're working with, their clients start actually increasing ad spend because they're like, oh wow, this is totally working. Yeah, so it's month to month. All of our plans forever are actually always month to month. Sure, sure. Yeah, we'll send you an email, right? Awesome. We'll shoot you an email right now. Thanks everyone again for jumping on the call. I really appreciate it. I think I told it to him, but you can't tell, right? Like, nobody watching can tell except for probably him. You think he'd be able to tell? Like, Ryan does something, I'm like, that's probably against the law, and then Mike's like, no, that's definitely not cool. That's definitely against the law. How are there that many fingerprints on this? Okay, this person just logged in and added a number. Whoa, that was the vlog. I hope you guys enjoyed it. Uh, today was awesome. It's a great day. Great, great, great little day. Great little Monday, Tuesday, uh, whatever day it is. Um, so yeah, that's the vlog for today. Again, if you guys have any questions about anything you saw us interviewing, if you know people that would be good go check out our AngelList profile. We have a bunch of job, uh, positions open there. If you know anyone that, you know, has a digital agency, I'd love to just chat with them just to see if it makes sense, or even just to pick their brain if they're using something else. But, um, yeah, I'm gonna let you guys go. Today was an amazing day. Thank you so much for following along on the journey. Again, if you're new here, uh, this is our journey. We're building PhoneWagon from the ground up. It's a SaaS startup based in New York City, went through Techstars this summer, and now we're just building, building, building, raising venture, uh, you know, building the team out and just trying to build the best product in the market. So hope you guys are doing something similar. If I can help out in any way, please, please, please let me know. Okay, I'll see you guys tomorrow. Peace.
