Creating sales videos on your computer

Ryan Dohrn shows how to record a personalized sales video on your computer using screen-capture software, then upload it unlisted to YouTube to send to prospects. He walks through preparing materials, recording a pitch about ad packages and audience size, and sharing the link with clients.

Hi everybody, Ryan Dohrn here, and I'm the publisher of Sales Training World. Some of you know me because of my work with 360 Ad Sales Training, and one of the things that I get asked about a lot is how do I record videos on my computer that I can share with my advertisers? And the reason that this is so important for me to talk about— not only have you asked for this as clients of mine, but also at conferences, But it's also important because it's a great sales tool, especially if you were selling to a younger media buyer or maybe even a younger audience. So I want to show you what that looks like. So as a couple of just kind of pre-recording things I want to share with you, if you're on a Mac, if you're on a Macintosh, QuickTime is usually something that comes installed on your Macintosh, on your Mac, if it's a MacBook Pro or whatever, or you can go and download a QuickTime Player is what it is. So it's either in the bottom, you know, of your toolbar, or you can find it under Applications. And then what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go to the top for QuickTime Player, and I'm gonna choose File, New Screen Recording. It's the 3rd option. It's not highlighted now because I'm using QuickTime Player to record this. If you're on a PC, there's a ton of screen capture tools. So you could just go to Google and you would type in PC screen capture tools, and we're gonna see quite a few here. I like Camtasia, which I think is good. There's one, I believe it's called Snagit, but there's, you know, several that you can find here that are free. I would encourage you to actually pay for one, okay, because they're just going to be better and they're not going to have a bunch of the other monkey business. So why— what else do you want to do in preparation before your recording is you want to make sure that all of the different tools you're going to use in recording your video are up on the screen. All right, so here's a couple of one-sheets. I'm going to make sure that I'm gonna zoom in on these a little bit because I wanna make sure that I can actually see these. So I'm gonna change the view and I'm going to zoom in on these because I wanna see. So my magnification on this, I'm going to make my magnification say 100% so that they're a little bit bigger. So I'm gonna pull up a PDF again. I'm gonna go under View, I'm gonna Zoom To, and I want to make it say like 100%, okay, so I can see these as I'm walking through and showing them to people on the video itself. All right, now all I'm doing is I'm simply recording on the microphone that's built into my computer. You can use a headset which will make it clearer, you can buy a microphone if you want to do that. So I'm doing this video in preparation to send to a client. Now what I try to do is do videos that are a little more generic, and the reason that I do that is It just makes it a little bit easier. Okay, so in preparation, what I'm going to do is I want to show 2 different PDF files in this video that I'm going to make for an advertiser, and then what I want to do is I actually then want to show them the website. Okay, I want to show them the Sales Training World website. Now the goal of this is I want to talk to them about banner advertising. Okay, excuse me, and then I want to talk with them about doing some type of podcast with me. So I'm going to go to those pages in advance to make sure that they load up and that it makes sense in the background. Okay. And you'll notice in this particular case, aha, look what's happening here. I'm either— my internet's slow or something. That page is not loading correctly. So I want to make sure that the pages are loaded and are accurate. Okay. So we'll just, let's talk about, we'll talk about events. Okay. Since that page isn't loading correctly for some reason. All right, so I've given you some kind of some pre-work that you need to do there to be prepared to record the video. Notice that you don't see me, and it's not because I'm not ravishingly handsome. It's because I haven't combed my hair today. I don't want anyone to see me, okay? Instead, I'm just going to record a video for a client. Okay, so let's just say that you've been prospecting someone, you want to sell them on your event, You also want to potentially sell them a banner ad on the main page of the website. Let's just say that you want to talk with them about your media offerings. And then let's just say you want to talk them through your data sheet and you want to do all of this in just a couple of minutes. I'm going to get these things ready to go on my screen. I'm going to be prepared to talk through these things and I'm going to practice it maybe a couple of times before I do it. That's it. All right, so whether you're using Camtasia or Snagit or you're using the QuickTime tool where you're going to do a screen capture, you're going to start that and you're going to be as smooth as you possibly can. Don't worry if it doesn't sound exactly perfect because that means you're a real person too. Okay, so let me prepare this and let's pretend like we're going to do this for a client and then I'm going to show you how to upload it correctly And share it. Okay, so here we go. We'll start in 3, 2, 1. Hey Bob, it's Ryan Dohrn over at Sales Training World, and I wanted to talk with you briefly and record a little video for you. I've been sending you a few emails and leaving a few voicemails, and I thought this video might do a better job explaining what I was calling about. So Sales Training World is a website specifically for people in the sales business, whether you're an inside or outside sales rep. We try to upload 2 or 3 pieces of information each week that'll benefit salespeople. What I wanted to talk with you about is potentially promoting your participation with articles, etc. Here on the main page, we've got smaller banner ads, 300 by 250s. We've got these 300 by 600 ads. But then also, we'd love to have your company and work with you on creating some sponsored content pieces. These would be articles that we would help you write. You would be the subject matter expert, and what we would do is we would load those directly into our, our system here, our content management system. We'd interview you, we'd create the article for you. It can mention your products, whatever you want to do within this article, we can potentially make it happen. And then what we'll do is we'll use our e-newsletter. We've got 7,000 subscribers to promote that article. Then we'll also create a banner ad for you that we'll use to promote your article. And then we'll also mention it also over on our Facebook feeds as well. Now the reason I think that Sales Training World, Bob, is a good fit for you is because you'll notice that we've got a magazine. We put that out in a digital edition. I shared with you some of our online components. 7-some thousand people read our e-newsletter. We run contests on a regular basis. Our social media feeds, we're very, very active. We have 16,000 500 followers on Twitter, so I think that's great. We're putting together an event in 2017 that I think that you'll really, really like, and we'll do videos all the time. We can incorporate that. We do a ton of research each year that I'd love to potentially share with you, and then we have our online business directory that we'll put you in absolutely free of charge. Let me tell you a little bit about people come to the website, and then I'll wrap up this quick video. We've got business owners, we've got executives, we've got about 85,000 people reading the website and magazine on a monthly basis. Their average age is around 42 and they have a household income of around $275,000. Interestingly enough, more people come by the website in any given month than you could actually fit at most college football games, Division I college football games on any given Saturday. It's a ton of people. So I would really love for you to check out sales-training-world.com. I'd love to have you come by the website and then I'd like an opportunity if you're so obliged to visit with you on the phone. And I hope this video was helpful in letting you know how we can work with you as a media partner and really make things happen. Alright, so it's as simple as that and then I would stop the recording. Okay, now I can't stop the recording right now because I'm making this recording for you. But you would stop the recording and then that's going to save that on your computer someplace. The next thing that I want to do then, and this is very important for you to follow me on this, is I want to go over to YouTube. You'll need a YouTube account, just a Gmail account. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to click on the upload tab and then I'm going to drag over here. I'm going to drag a file here to begin the upload process. Okay? And the reason this is important is because I need you to notice something. So I'm going to drag over a video that I can potentially put there on the website, and the reason this is important is because you want this video, you want it to be unlisted, okay, and if you list it in the regular index of YouTube, then what it's going to do is it's going to show up if someone comes and searches on YouTube, it's going to show up, and honestly, I mean, you don't want that to happen, you want this to be a little more a little more private, okay. So I'm gonna, again, I'm gonna click on upload, and then what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go and I'm gonna find the file that I want to upload, okay, into the, into the database. And so for example, let's just say I'm gonna take this MP4 file here, okay, I'm gonna drag it across so it'll start uploading, and then here on the right I want to choose unlisted, not private, don't use private. I wanna choose unlisted, and then I wanna fill in the information here. So this might be, you know, video for Bob, and then I would probably put over here, just so that you know, I would put private. Video for Bob. And then here I would put, this video, you know, is private for Bob Jones only. From Ryan Dohrn. And I might put my email address, ryan@brainswellmedia.com, okay, but it's got to be unlisted. You really have to make sure that you do this. It's got to be unlisted. Then it's going to give you the link here once it's uploaded and processed. You're simply going to take this link here and that's the link that you're going to send to Bob and you're going to send it in an email and it really is as simple as that. The beauty of videos is that they can watch them over and over again, you know, that's really a cool part. The other thing is that you don't have to be perfect. You'll notice that my conversation there wasn't perfect, and that's okay. It's all right. You want to sound real, and if you want to show yourself on the screen, that's fine as well, but I really encourage you to use videos. Now let's talk about your media kits for a second. I'd also encourage you to use videos in your media kits, and so you might record videos like this, maybe leave Bob's name off of it, record videos about your products, and then add those to your pages as well. My name is Ryan Dohrn. I'm a sales coach and a revenue coach, and I'd love to train your sales teams. We can cover this in one-on-one coaching or whatever it is that you'd like to do, and I'd love to, you know, come and train your teams as well. My main website is 360adsales.com for those of you in the media business. I've got 7 hours of training online that you can check out for a very low price. I'd love to have you join my e-newsletter as well, and of course each month we'll add all kinds of great advice here under the Ad Sales Training blog. I've worked with about 300 media companies, trained 3,000 salespeople in 7 countries, and I had an opportunity last year to write a book called Selling Backwards, which by the way, if you're an Amazon Prime member, that would be included in your membership, so you should check that out as well. Alright, take care my friends. I hope that was helpful, and we'll see you out on the street. Don't forget, if ad sales was easy, everybody'd be doing it, and they're not. So that makes us some incredibly special people. Or maybe we're crazy, who knows. Take care. God bless. Thank you.
