Ryan Dohrn shows how to upload a PDF to Joomla and link it from an article. Create a folder called "pdf" in Media Manager, upload your file, then use the link button in the Article Manager to point to images/pdf/yourfilename.pdf.
Hey everybody, it's Ryan Dohrn. Today we're gonna talk about how to add a PDF to your Joomla website. We're using Joomla 1.6 today for our demonstration, but this same information will apply to Joomla 1.5 users as well. First thing I wanna do is log in and go to my Media Manager, and what I'm gonna do then is I'm going to create a PDF folder. Okay, now if you don't know how to create a PDF folder, simply go to this box here Type in PDF and then choose Create Folder. Remember, you don't want to have any spaces. You don't want to do like PDF space Files or something like that. If you do need to create multiple names, I would encourage you to do an underscore, okay, like that. Now, what I would really encourage you, though, overall is don't use spaces. Just keep the name simple and straightforward. Let's go into the PDF folder we've created and we're going to choose Browse. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to go down, I'm going to find a file that I want. Here it is here, Online Sales Story. I'm going to choose Open, and then I'm going to choose Start Upload. Now, it's important for you to remember when you look at this file. Alright, so the file was already there, and you want to look at the file name because you need to remember it, OnlineSalesStory.pdf. Okay, if you feel like you're going to potentially forget the name of the file, then what you can do is just simply write it down or something like that, okay? Now, I want to go over to the article where I want to put this in. So, I'm going to go to the Article Manager, and here is the article that I want to add this to. So, I'm going to find the text, and let's just do event information, let's do PDF, okay? I'm going to highlight this text, alright? And then I'm going to choose the link button, okay? Highlight the text, and choose the Link button. Now, the URL for this is simply images, no forward slash, no anything, just images/pdf. Okay, PDF, gotta spell it right. There we go, come on now, there we go, pdf, and then Online Sales Story, okay, .pdf. If you have an error or you get a problem, it's probably because you've done this wrong. You've put dots, spaces, dashes in the wrong space. Then simply choose Insert, If you'd like this to open up in a new window, just choose Open in New Window for those of you on Internet Explorer. Those of you on Firefox, it's not important. Let's choose Insert, okay, and let's choose Save. Let's go over to our website and let's refresh the page. A common problem, people make a change and don't refresh the page. Then we're going to simply go here, and here is Event Information. I'm going to put my mouse across it and look at the bottom of my screen to see what is being pulled up. Let's click on it, and sure enough, there it is. If you get an error, remember you've probably typed the format the wrong way. It's as simple as that. Watch this video over and over again, and you'll master the skills of Joomla just like we have.
