How to alter the byline or written by line in a Joomla article

Ryan Dohrn shows how to control whether a Joomla article displays the author byline using Article Manager settings. You can hide or show it globally or override it per article, though changing the actual author name text requires editing library files.

Hey everybody, it's internet consultant Ryan Dohrn. One of the questions I get a lot is from my magazine publishing customers is about article bylines, the written by that is shown at the top or not shown at the top of articles. There's a couple of places to change this. We're here in the article manager, so it's just simply content, article manager, and if you want to change this globally, meaning you want to shut it off on basically all articles, you're going to go into this Options tab. You'll notice right here, if you scroll down, Show Author is set to Hide. Okay, that means that on all the articles, it's not going to show the author. You also notice a lot of other parameters here. You've got Show the Title, Link the Title, Show the Intro Text, Show Read More. I mean, there's a lot of options here under the Article Manager Options. So, in this circumstance, Show Author is set to Hide, which means it's not going to show any author at all. Okay, so let's cancel out of that. Now, if that was set to Show, meaning it was going to show the author, then you could actually shut it off based on each individual article. So let me just click on an article title. Within the article itself, you'll notice here on the right side, you've got Article Options. You click on that, and this is where you can either use globals, like for example, Let's look down here for Author, Show Author. Okay, so right now it's using the global configuration, which is Hide. If you want to actually make it show, then you would choose Show, and that will in almost all cases override the global option, and then it will show the article, the author's name on that particular story. Okay, now sometimes the situation might be reversed, depends upon your Joomla setup, but I'm showing you everything based upon a 2.0, 2.5, 1.7 typical Joomla setup. One of the nice things about Joomla, guys, is that in almost all circumstances, most of the changes in Joomla are based upon security, you know, the ability to, you know, for speed, and you're not going to find a lot of this stuff has changed. This is the good core stuff that Joomla is so well known for, things that we all know and love. Okay, so there you go. That's some thoughts on the byline. Now, next, a lot of people want to change that written by or article by or whatever, and they want to know, hey, where do I find that? You actually— that's a high-end move, a high-end maneuver. You're probably going to find that in your libraries file, and in most cases, you're going to need to hire someone that knows how to edit that code that's on your server to make that happen. So I don't recommend that in most cases, you know, for most publishers. Okay? All right. If you need anything else from me, it's Ryan Dohrn at BrainSwell Media.
