In this 2011 tutorial, Ryan Dohrn of Brain Swell Media walks viewers through reordering articles in Joomla 1.5 (applicable to 1.6/1.7+). He demonstrates accessing the Article Manager, selecting a specific category, and changing article order using two methods: clicking the up/down arrows or entering explicit ordering numbers and saving with the hidden diskette icon. He warns about the common impatience of users who don’t wait for the system to update. Dohrn then explains how menu items can override the default ordering via the Advanced Parameters tab, where options such as oldest first, most recent first, alphabetical, or reverse alphabetical can be set. He shows how to locate these settings in the Menu Item Manager and confirms that the default setting respects the ordering defined in the Article Manager. The tutorial concludes with a concise recap of the steps, a reminder to save changes, and a brief promotion of his consulting services at brainswellmedia.com.

Hi there, this is Ryan Dohrn over at Brain Swell Media and we're doing a Joomla 1.5 tutorial. Now keep in mind this is basically the same, is going to apply to Joomla 1.7 or higher. The difference is in 1.7, 1.6 and higher, there's not sections and categories, there's just categories, but pretty much the CMS is going to operate the same. Okay, so what we've done is we've gone to Content, Article Manager, or from the control panel we've just chosen Article Manager. And let's just say that we want to reorder the articles as they're appearing within, let's just say, here within My Internet Consulting Blog. Okay, I'm going to choose that from the top. And remember, when I'm done, I'm going to have to put this back on Select Category or it's still going to only show these articles. Okay, just a little tip there. Now, let's just say that I want this one here, Should Print Be a Part of My Marketing Strategy, to actually be in the first spot when displayed. What I'm going to do— there's 2 ways to do it. One, I can choose to click this up arrow, just simply click it one time, wait for the system to catch up. There you go. And by the way, that's one of the most common problems I run into is that people are so impatient, they don't wait for the system to catch up, okay? Or what I can do is I can actually choose a number here. I can put a 2 here and a 1 here, and then you have to click this little diskette. I know it's kind of hidden, but it's one of the things that you'll get used to. Click there. Okay, so that's a really easy way to change the ordering. Now, remember something though, there's kind of a trick here I want to share with you. If you are linking or if you're sending people over to a list based on a menu item, you can actually override this, what's referred to as primary ordering. Okay, so let's go create a menu item. We're going to go Menus, Main Menu. Okay, and let's just say we're creating a new one, so let's go New. And let's just choose that we're going to go over and we're going to go under articles and we're going to list all the articles within a category, okay. Now, here's where you choose what category you want listed, okay, number of links you want displayed, okay, but everybody stops here, check this out. If you click on parameters advanced, right now it's set on default, so it should behave accordingly to what you've just set, what I just taught you, but you can also look at this, you can do oldest article first, Most recent first. I mean, this is the beauty of Joomla. You can title it alphabetical first, you can do reverse alphabetical, etc., etc. So, from a menu item, so if you're looking at your section or your category and you're like, man, why is it not behaving? Why is it not ordering correctly? Well, perhaps within the menu item itself, okay, you actually have an issue here under parameters, advanced. So, how do you find that? Well, right over here you can see like here's one that's linking to a category, okay. So let me click on that one, and in this case, if I click Parameters, Advanced, okay, look, it's following the default category order and then the primary order default. I could change that and force the order here, but it's behaving properly under default, so I'm just going to leave it be. Okay, so there's so many options. So again, that's in the Menu Item Manager. Okay, so again, just the basics, you know, on ordering things is you just go Content, Article Manager, then you're going to want to choose the section or category that you want to order up. Okay, then you're actually going to go and find which articles you want to move around. You can either place a number inside of the box and then click the little diskette to save it, or you can use the up and down green arrows, okay. All right, I hope that's helpful.
