How to create and manage a poll in Joomla

Ryan Dohrn walks through creating a poll in Joomla's admin interface, from setting up the poll itself to assigning it to a module position so it appears on your site. He covers the Polls component, filtering modules, and suggests changing polls weekly to keep visitors engaged.

We'll spend a couple seconds today and look at how to manage polls on the website. So of course, the first thing that we want to do is identify where the poll is at. So here's the poll here on the website, here on the right side of the screen. Okay, we're going to walk through the steps. So I've already logged into the administrative panel. I'm going to scroll down until I find Polls. And this is going to be under Components. So here's Polls. And what this is going to do then is show us the polls that are currently available. Alright, you'll notice here that it's going to show lit up in blue, or a checkmark depending upon the interface, which ones are active and which ones are not active. Okay? Now keep in mind, over here on the main website, this area right here is a module, and you're going to need to tell that module which one of these polls here that you want to use. Okay? So let's go ahead and let's click New. Let's go ahead and create just a fake test poll. So, the question on the poll is going to be, you know, is— let's just— what is your favorite color? Okay, and then let's just do 3 options: red, blue, and yellow. Okay, and then it's published, yes or no? Let's go ahead and say yes. Even though we publish it, doesn't mean it's going to appear on the main page. We have to assign it to the module. So let's go ahead and click Save. All that's going to do is publish it, meaning it's going to make available— it's going to make it available for us to be able to publish it. Alright, so what is your favorite colors? Right here. Alright, now what we need to do is go over to Modules, Site Modules, and let's go ahead and choose the position as Right. Should find our poll here. Okay, and so let's go down until we find Poll. Until we find Poll. So right here you can see, how do we use Riding Spurs? What this really should be is this should actually be, you know, one that's called Polls, okay? And you don't have to because it's already going to say the title of it. So then all you need to do actually right here is just, you know, make the title of this Poll so you know what it is. Show Title, No. Now then over here you're going to choose which poll you want to display. Okay, so I'm going to choose, what is your favorite color? And I'm going to click Save. Then what I'm going to do is I go back over to the main page of the website and I'm going to click Refresh, and then there it is, what is your favorite color? Okay, so to change it back, I need to go back over to the Module Manager. I need to choose which one of the polls I want, so it's, how do you use riding spurs? Okay, I'm going to click Save. Okay, so remember, it's very easy to do, but there's 2 parts to the process. One, you need to go over to the Polls component, okay, and click on that. Then you need to make a poll and you need to publish it to make sure that it's available. Then you need to go over to the Modules and you need to find it. Now, because you have so many modules listed, all you want to do is just filter by poll, go, and then it's going to show you the poll. Here it is, alright? And the poll right here is the one that's active. These other 2, I don't know what they are, you can just delete them. Hope this is helpful to you. Hope it makes a lot of sense. Hope it allows you to change your polls. You need to change these about once a week if you want to get some good interactivity. Have a great day!
